Round 11 trading (and beyond)
I hate this week (and next) for trading.
You’re going in knowing the players you’re getting will have a bye coming up. We’ve got 5 players coming into our teams over the next two weeks that will be missing a game coming up. It sucks.
How do we attack them?
Some of us have a forced trade. I’ve got Josh Kelly, others would have Clayton Oliver and/or Jason Johannisen. We have to trade all three of them (if you have all three, maybe Clarry is a hold as he might be back the soonest, but I am doubtful on his return being before his R14 bye).
Simple answer for the big premium midfielders is getting another big premium midfielder. Without considering byes, Rory Laird would be my No.1 target followed by Zach Merrett, Andrew Brayshaw and Tom Green. I don’t mind Jack Steele as that sub-$900k option, but he would be one I would prefer to target after his round 12 bye.
You could go down to a Jy Simpkin (over Dom Sheed) but you’re really taking a few points off there from that premium midfielder you had a captain option. This could be acceptable if you’re selling a red dot to a decent player as an upgrade… obviously a premium is good, but a decent mid-pricer that works with bye structure may help as well.
If you don’t have a forced trade, fixing up your bye structure (trying to get as many good players playing each week) and getting some red dots sorted, is the strategy I would employ.
We had a bit of banter last night about selling playing rookies … my team sucks, so I am going to need the likes of Reuben Ginbey, Luke Pedlar, etc. over the byes. It is the simple strategy to employ to upgrade them, but I don’t like doing it while I have red dots flooding my bench. Moving one of them could be ok, but if you’re still rocking with 4+ red dots on your bench and your bye structure is out of whack, I am much more happier having these guys being there for R12 and R13 and then trade them at the bye.
That’s one of the things I look ahead to. I want to trade these types of players on their bye. Not sideways trade a premium. Upgrade those mid-pricers/rookies at their bye. Ginbey, Pedlar and Worpel would be great names for me to off load ahead of R14. For some, it might be Hobbs (he could be a bit of a longer-term play, though).
The rookies are a worry. We have to be realistic with who we think are going to be there not only this week, but through the byes. Fleeton and Drury looked ok as (low scoring) rookies to be there until their R15 bye – that looked nice… but they’re not. That compounds with how many R15 premiums some coaches have.
Every team is different, map it out and hopefully you can get yourself with a decent number of players who can score you a ton on their given week. Fingers crossed we get lucky! Plenty more bye strategy talk on the video and on next week’s podcast.
Upcoming DPP additions
It’s a busy week! It’s the last round before the byes but we also have a new set of DPPs dropping on Sunday night (plus a mid-season draft next week!).
Who are we expecting to gain DPP? There aren’t a heap of locks … but there are a few big names that are in calculation.
Jack Macrae is currently sitting on 40% as a FWD. As 35% is the cut off, this is a good chance to happen if he continues his current role … but Bevo.
A couple who have felt like they were going to get it have shifted towards not getting it in the last couple of weeks. Sam Walsh has 96% midfield time last week and is now just under the threshold at 34% as a forward. Max Gawn is right on 35% for FWD status. Jayden Short has dipped under the cutoff as his likely DEF status is under danger due to his return to the midfield. What will a new coach do?
A couple of other interesting names see Matt Kennedy as 32% for DEF and some handy DPP for the byes with Nick Daicos 29% as a MID and Ben Hobbs 47%.
Christian Petracca might be a longshot for FWD status as he currently sits at 29%.
Deeper draft leagues might consider Xavier O’Halloran as he is a lock for FWD status.
Matt Mottram on Coaches’ Corner
This was a great chat with the legend that was the 2022 winner who has moved into 6th overall. Matt is a top bloke and gives some good advice… including that you can take a step back and not get too invested. Give it a listen ahead of lockout tonight.
Join our Knockout competition
Weve had this running on our Patreon this year and it’s down to the final 32!
It has been a lot of fun having the eliminator-style game back, so we thought we would have a crack at another one post-byes with thanks to our mate Jaiden.
All you have to do is join our league (code: SEKHWV6P) and if you are in the top 512 scores for the four bye rounds (total points), you will make it into the knockout comp that will start in round 16.

Warne Dawgs – Round 11
Ah, what a week! Before Tuesday, I was able to get Wardlaw and Hobbs. Happy days. Keep improving my team, get rookies off field, etc. Then come Tuesday evening, I have lost Josh Kelly (hamstring – 4 weeks) and then on Thursday night, lost a few rookies on the bench which makes things a struggle. Anyway, onwards and upwards… looking at byes to help dictate some things. They’re not great! But anyway! I’ll work throught it. Good luck this week!
