Fry’s Forgotten Few – Round 8

Longtime DT Talk readers may remember in years past my coverage of some POD’s (players of difference). While player ownership in AFL Fantasy is a statistic that I don’t spend a lot of time hashing over, having a unique in your side can help to vault you above the rest of the competition snapping at your heels in the rankings. Here are a few players who have an ownership under 10% that you need to keep your eye on and may just be trade targets for the week ahead.

DEFENSE

Jack Crisp (Magpies, $656K, 8.57% ownership)
YOU could make the case that Crisp is the form backman in the fantasy right now. No defender has a higher three-round average than the Pies rebounder, who’s going at a 107.3 clip in those contests. His breakeven of 75 should be reached this week and if you want in on him, you’d better do it quick as his price will only continue to climb.

Jason Johannisen (Bulldogs, $592K, 2.68% ownership)
SINCE returning to the Bulldogs side in Round 4, Johannisen has hardly put a foot wrong, going at an average over 90. It’s worth pointing out that he has played some ‘less than intimidating’ outfits in Carlton, Freo and Richmond, but he can’t be faulted for his form. If JJ can keep these scores up as his fixture gets harder he’s worth a punt.

MIDFIELD

Scott Pendlebury (Magpies, $712K, 4.26% ownership)
IF I could, I would give some SERIOUS consideration to trading in Scott Pendlebury this week. No one has scored more points in the last three weeks and a career average of 116.7 from 11 games vs. Carlton has me drooling at what he could do this weekend. Four of his next five games heading into the bye are at the MCG as well, a ground where he averages 109.2 for his career. Tick.

Jaeger O’Meara (Hawks, $759K, 5.03% ownership)
SURPRISINGLY O’Meara is one of just eight players who currently owns an average over the coveted 110 mark. The Hawks stud maintained his place in that elite group despite scoring a season-low 83 on the weekend, illustrating just how well he has played in his other five games this season. The Giants pose a tough ask this weekend, but his run into the bye after that is mighty juicy.

Mitch Duncan (Cats, $722K, 0.88% ownership)
MITCH Duncan has more fantasy points in 2019 than any other Geelong Cat. Not Tom Stewart, not Tim Kelly, and not even Patrick Dangerfield has played better from a fantasy perspective to start the season. And yet, as is the case every season, Duncan has a criminally low ownership percentage, with the majority of us unlikely to consider him. Buck the trend and ride his 105 average to the finishing line, I dare you.

RUCK

Tim English (Bulldogs, $544K, 5.01% ownership)
YOU know that whole ‘start the season with Tim English’ plan? Turns out it might have worked. It’s a shame that the coaches who took the punt probably didn’t have the patience to hold him for his 109, 86 and 91 in the past few matches. If you find yourself with a problem at R2, English is worth considering.

Rhys Stanley (Cats, $595K, 1.62% ownership)
GEELONG’S ruck brigade hasn’t been their greatest strength in years past, however, this year Rhys Stanley has made the position his own. Scoring 211 points in the last fortnight has seen Stanley push his average into career-high territory and while 86.6 doesn’t sound like a world-beating score, there’s no reason why Stanley can’t nudge the 90’s with his continued fantasy success.

FORWARD

Jeremy Cameron (Giants, $639K, 3.01% ownership)
NO player has kicked more goals than Jeremy Cameron this season, with the Giants tall bagging three or more in every one of his seven matches so far. Key forwards are usually taboo in AFL fantasy, but it’s hard to argue with the mammoth totals Cameron has been posting. Not shy to a score in the 60’s, there’s a risk associated with Cameron, but he’s shown an unreal ceiling (see Round 3 vs Richmond).

Caleb Daniel (Bulldogs, $651K, 6.12% ownership)
ONE of the surprise packets of the season so far, Caleb Daniel is putting up points in a hurry. Second in the team for disposals per game at 29.0, Daniel has made himself fantasy relevant with just one score under 85 all year. The fact that he’s only owned in 6% of teams has him high up on my wishlist as a great POD.

David Mundy (Dockers, $649K, 1.99% ownership)
IT’S no shock to declare David Mundy a big-time player and his two best games this season came when the lights were shining the brightest. However, a slow start and a 33-year old body with 300+ games under his belt raises a potential red flag over his durability and consistency. One to watch for certain and he could be gangbusters against Richmond this weekend.
