Hi, I’m Matty Faz. You may remember me from such fantasy content platforms as The Draft Doctors… and that’s all. Yes, it is with a heavy heart that I bring you this article, as the Draft Doctors have finally called it a day (leaving me as a free agent) after bringing us so much wisdom and laughter for the better part of a decade. I guess what they say is true, all good things must come to an end. And to use another hokey cliche, when one door closes, another one opens… and Warnie has opened up the DT Talk door for me! Cheers, mate!
Before we get into things, I’d just like to share my gratitude here and thank Stevie Fizz and the boys for giving me the chance to write for them for the past 5 years. They allowed me to bring my Stream Team article concept to life and gave me the chance to write about fantasy footy AND make some dollars when they got me involved with writing the much-revered Draft Kit. I wish all of the Draft Doctors the best in their content creation retirement – y’all will be missed.
So here I am, writing for DT talk! The Hat Bros might not care about my draft focus, but my mass of Twitter followers will, all 400 and something of them… *cough*. Huge thanks go to Warnie for giving me the chance to keep my content creation hobby alive. I hope all you DT talk fans like the article.
Anyway, the purpose of this article is to suggest one-week streaming options for draft leagues. Each week, I will compile a team of lowly owned players (<40% ownership) that are worthy of a one-week pick-up-and-play, helping you fill any gaps you may have in your starting squads.
Here are the waiver-wire players that I like as stream targets for Round 2 (ownership % taken from AFL Fantasy):
DEFENDERS
Jase Burgoyne (38%) vs. Essendon – I’m suprised to see this guy’s ownership sit so low, but I reckon that could change after a matchup with Essendon. Did you see what the Hawk’s rebounding players did to the Bombers last week? This is clearly a shallow league play, but man, does it have some BOOM potential; Burgoyne has the chops, yo.
Finn O’Sullivan (21%) vs. West Coast – the matchup data I use does account for last year’s scoring, so it should come as no shock that West Coast are a plum matchup for inside mids, and this is where Finn is playing right now. Yes, he’s playing as more of a defensive mid, but with the Roos’ tail wagging, I reckon Finn can get amongst the scoring against the Wet Toast Eagles this week.
Bodhi Uwland (10%) vs. Richmond – dubious first name; quality player. Bodhi has a sweet matchup for general defenders this week and after a delicious little 92 AF against the Eagles, I reckon he can produce much of the same in Round 2. Now if you’ve never read this article, you have to know that each week I assign one player as my Shoe-in of the Week. This player is basically the player that I can’t see failing you as a streamer. Bodhi is my inaugral DT Talk Shoe-in of the Week – get excited! Or don’t… in any case. Make sure this guy is owned before your lockout starts in Round 2.
MIDFIELDERS
Willem Drew (36%) vs. Essendon – all of the Hawks mids got a little somethin’ somethin’ from the Bombers last week, and I can see that repeating at Adelaide Oval this week. Ollie Wines is still out, which is handy as well. Willem Drew is a Stream Team staple and if you followed the Draft Doctors, you’ll already know that this guy is one of our favourite/most relied upon waiver pigs. Use and abuse him this week the way we have for the past 5 years.
Angus Sheldrick (33%) vs. Hawthorn – it’s not a great matchup, but with Gulden and probably Heeney set to miss, I really like the door that is left open for Sheldrick. He’s got a fantasy game and is a good points per minute player – he just hasn’t had much opportunity to flourish being stuck behind the premium mids at Sydney. The advantage in picking up Sheldrick is that you can loophole him from your bench on Thursday night. If you don’t know how that works, @ me on X or Twitter or whatever you fuckin’ call Elon’s digital hellscape.
Cam Mackenzie (24%) vs. Sydney – he may have gotten the ‘Essendon bump’ last week, but with 43% of the CBAs, I was pretty happy with his role in terms of fantasy. I reckon Connor Mac is too valuable up front, so if Mackenzie keeps playing well, he could hold a midfield role while Day is out and could be a guy worth keeping. This is another player you can loophole from your bench on Thursday night.
Tom Blamires (11%) vs. West Coast – all you salary cappers are aware of this guy already, but with Wet Toast on deck, he’s also draft relevant this week. He’s a play in a deeper leagues.
FORWARDS
Ben King (10%) vs. Richmond – we love key forwards against the Tigers, and with the Suns humming, King has the potential to pop a big one this week.
Josh Treacy (25%) vs. Melbourne – I can see the Dees’ bubble bursting over in Perth this week, and Treacy is the kind of player who could benefit from that. Plus, I reckon the Dockers will be pretty keen to rectify things affter the game-that-got-away last week. He put up some impressive numbers in the preseason, so don’t be shocked if this guy tons up every now and then. Treacy is a great play in your SC formats, but I like him in AF too.
Joe Richards (6%) vs. Essendon – the Bombers are a team to target when it comes to streaming general forwards, and even in a woeful loss to the Roos last week, Richards was able to put up reasonable numbers. It’s a bit of a roughy, but if you’re in a deep league and need a forward, you could punt on much worse.
Alrighty, my first article of the year is in the books, as well as my first ever article writing for a bunch of fellas I’ve followed since the days of Jonathan Brown and Kane Cornes being premium fantasy options. Back then, the boys even used to get hot chicks to feature in their videos and give fantasy advice (I can’t recall her name but she goes by Darthlux on Twitter, I think).
Anywho, if you’ve got any draft questions, more specifically, ones relating to streaming, hit me up on X: @lionelhutz4prez.
