Why should I pick him?

We’re all in need of $200k rookies this time of year. Even better if they’re big bodied rookies that played in the seniors. Even more so if they get drafted by the worst AFL/VFL side since University. On top of that, he has AFL pedigree, with his father having played 2 games for West Coast and 74 games for Geelong (hey, I’m impressed). Ladies and gents (excluding Millar Time), I present to you West Coast rookie midfielder, Clay Hall.

Hall has shown an ability to post decent fantasy scores in the juniors in 2023, with a nice spread across the stat line. At Colts level, that translated to a whopping 116.5 average and at the Under 18 Champs a 99.7 average. To top it off, he managed 9 WAFL games and more than held his own, with an average of 67.1.

His scoring ability and senior experience is one thing, but when you throw in the fact that West Coast has drafted him, we should all be licking our lips. Given the state of the club’s list, they need to get games into their kids to accelerate their rebuild. In his favour is that he can play inside and outside, and like Ginbey, he can mix it with the bigger bodies. So, you’d imagine he’d get an opportunity. If I was to guess when, I’d say after he gets a few floggings under his belt with the West Coast WAFL side (maybe sooner if Dom Sheed gets injured…). With regular game time, given his junior numbers and WAFL experience, there’s a world where he could average in the 50s in 2024.

This might be a good point to say that I’ve had my eye on Clay Hall for a while. Well, at least since 20 October 2023 (👀👇). Prepare yourselves for a victory lap when he debuts.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

He’s a $200k MID only rookie. Traditionally, they aren’t walk up starts in Round 1 sides. If he doesn’t get selected but other MID rookies do, naturally they should be the ones occupying your bench for cash generation.

His value, if selected for a debut, is clearly more in Classic. He has potential to average in the 50s with a decent run at it. That’s some handy cash generation.

I wouldn’t draft him in single seasons drafts, but he’d definitely be worth a late flyer in Keeper / Dynasty Leagues given his scoring ability as a junior and the strong chance he will get opportunities at West Coast.

At the end of the day, if there aren’t any other $200k debutants for Round 1 to fill out your bench, given his basement price, you’d be saving yourself a future rookie trade by selecting him in your starting squad.
