Half of the top-25 averaging players are sitting out this week and that means we have the toughest group of captains to pick from this year. Especially with Taranto having a break. The thing is, we still have some great options and as long as you use your VC wisely (you listening Warnie), you should be in a good place to hit a guy in the 120+ range.
Remember, as always, you can catch the extended Calvin’s Captains article over on our patreon and join the awesome group of legends that are supporting us in our quest to provide more and more quality content.
CALVIN’S TOP-5 CAPTAINS
#1 – Rory Laird v COLL
@ the MCG, SUN 1:10pm
The Pies aren’t as scary as they have been. They have gone from a toughb match-up to an “easier one” for MIDs. Recently, guys like Viney 135, Petracca 103 and Hunter all hit a ton against them. Sheed 138, Duggan 137 and Kelly 112 had a day out. Greenwood 114 and Scott 101 were also good and Docherty 124 and Cerra 119 also didn’t struggle.
In fact, the highest two scoring MIDs against Collingwood in their last four games have averaged 121. Laird loves playing the Pies with previous scores of 163, 131 and 139 and should be great again, like he has been with 124, 81, 131 and 131.
#2 – Josh Dunkley v STK
@ Marvel, FRI 7:50pm
Averaging 123 in his last three games, Dunks is firing. St Kilda give up points as we know and recently… Taranto (147), Cotchin (119) and Dusty (114) all cashed in. He has a lowest score of 112 in his last four games and ticks many boxes here. A safe VC.
#3 – Errol Gulden v WCE
@ the SCG, SAT 4:35pm
This game has his name written all over it. VC Mega alert! West Coast are now the #1 easiest for MIDs this year and now over the last five weeks giving up points to Laird 124, Dawson 105, Mitchell 124, Daicos 124, Martin 124 and Merrett 111.
#4 – Andrew Brayshaw v ESS
@ Optus, SAT 7:25pm
The Bombers did have a patch this year where they gave up plenty and that will happen here. Brayshaw had 123 and 137 on them in his last two games… and is going ok at the moment with 109, 100 and 103.
#5 – Zach Merrett v FRE
@ Optus, SAT 7:25pm
Zach had 112 on the Dockers last year and is coming off scores of 97, 155, 111 and 158, Merrett loves playing in Perth with previous scores of 118, 122, 132 and 124.
OTHERS TO CONSIDER…
Nick Daicos v Adelaide – Hasn’t hit 120+ in his last seven, despite being great with 101, 114 and 116 in his last three. He had 147 and 73 on the Crows last year and could be great off his bye.
Jordan Dawson v Collingwood – Form is great in his last three games coming off 105, 128 and 135. Just like Laird… the Magpies don’t scare me at the moment and I’m happy to take them on.
Caleb Serong v Essendon – 106, 113 and 104 is how he has been tracking and he had 107 on the Bombers last year. He’s always that 105-115 mark, but could be bigger this week.
PERTH LEGENDS
Nothing to do on Thursday the 13th of July?… come and have a beer with us and many other legends from Perth. Warnie might even buy you a beer. Warning… Warnie has never bought a beer. Either way, it should be a ripper night so get along and say g’day.
