Friday Fantasy Fill Up – Rd. 13

Grab a knock off froth and get set for round 13.

Welcome to a Friday arvo column that hopefully helps you get set for the weekend ahead. I’ll be looking at the key points/questions that have popped up during the week with some quick fire opinions, plus a look at how the mighty Warne Dawgs are looking ahead of the coming round.

Don’t miss:

Round 13 trading (and beyond)

I’ve said this plenty of times, but the best strategy is to trade out a player with a bye (or upcoming bye) for a player who is coming off the bye.

Sound simple, right?

After chasing those ‘good bye’ players from the Suns, I might have to make some notes in my little Fantasy black book about trying too hard to trade for the byes. I could’ve put my team in a better position if I wasn’t so fixated on them… and even now, I am left with some weird choices that I don’t love. It also means that I’m not even really contemplating some of the players that could shape the rest of the season. Those being Ben Keays, Darcy Cameron and even Kieren Briggs (who isn’t really an option for me with set-and-forget rucks).

We’ve already had the Saints and Swans play, so being a Friday, we can’t use them as trade in targets. Rookies Angus Sheldrick and Marcus Windhager produced solid scores which, based on last week for some coaches like me, might hit that 16-18th man score (hopefully it’s better this week with most teams having a better ’22’ with 21 being the mean across most switched on coaches). Jack Sinclair was a tick as a premium (oh and Rowan Marshall if you grabbed him off the bye), but you most likely felt short changed with Chad Warner, Jack Steele, Errol Gulden and Jake Lloyd. They were all reasonable options for one reason or another.

We’re left with Brisbane (Sat arvo) and Fremantle (Sat night) players as our remaining bye-done guys.

Andrew Brayshaw is the obvious one. A lock for me to be a top 8 midfielder (for few I reckon) and while the price is high, I am ok going into him. Caleb Serong is next, but I think I have Lachie Neale ahead of him for value. The Lions’ run from here looks tasty and he *should* be a decent selection. I’ve got Hayden Young over Luke Ryan mainly for recent form. Calvin likes Young a lot in this week’s Scale of Hardness.

As for some other value, Matthew Johnson is the pick of them at $349k. Maybe you could launch into Nat Fyfe. While we joked about it being Monday content on the Pintcast, it is a play but after Windhager was named, I was happier to save the $100k and go there.

There’s also Daniel Richwatch the video and see below for more on him.

We have covered off a lot of other options who still have a bye coming across our content this week. I like Kieren Briggs as an option for a Gawn or another ruck that isn’t one of the big boys. Darcy Cameron, even with some good opponents coming up, could help you through R15 if you’ve got him in the FWD-line. Something to consider there.

Ben Keays could be a smash play, but there’s something that makes me worried the midfield role isn’t permanent. If it is, he’s got huge upside… if not, you’ll be wanting to trade out of him pretty quick smart. Tarryn Thomas at under $500k would be value if he wasn’t just another R15 bye players. Elliot Yeo has the R14 bye defender problem. All players I would be happy to launch into if it worked for my team, but I can’t due to their upcoming byes.

A rookie could be brought in as they won’t hurt you points-wise like a premium… so a Josh Sinn or a Ryan Maric is ok to do outside of this theory (Sinn, though, is a R15 bye FWD… not good!).

Team announcements

A weird one this week … and gave me flashbacks to Covid times. The Monday teams (Melbourne v Collingwood) won’t be announced until Sunday at 6:20pm AEST. Usually we would get their squad of 26 on Thursday night and they would be trimmed to 22s on Saturday at 4:30pm. This was amended to 5pm this year and now out of the blue, it’s the Sunday night timeslot.

I only found this out via the weekly comms that come from the AFL. No explanation has been given.

For newbies, we used to get teams at 5pm on a Thursday. This moved to 6:20pm so that Channel 7 have first access to them and can have them in their 6pm bulletin (ie. lead with a big selection story if they wish). During Covid, they went to 6:20pm the night before they would play… but a groundswell of support from a lot of stakeholders, Fantasy community included, we got our Thursday night teams back! Let’s hope there isn’t too much of a shift moving forward.

Key thing out of this, however, is that Harvey Harrison was one of the most traded in players this week. He’s, rightly, sliding back in the order, but is far from a lock to make the Pies’ 22. Abort that mission.

Join our Knockout competition

Weve had this running on our Patreon this year and it’s down to the final 16!

It has been a lot of fun having the eliminator-style game back, so we thought we would have a crack at another one post-byes with thanks to our mate Jaiden.

All you have to do is join our league (code: SEKHWV6P) and if you are in the top 512 scores for the four bye rounds (total points), you will make it into the knockout comp that will start in round 16.

Click here for some more details on how it will work.

Warne Dawgs – Round 13

Oh boy… I really wish I went Sheldrick last night instead of Windhager (that job security worried me too much). It would’ve meant I could go Sharp to a Neale type, but anyway it is what it is. I could go Ratkins to Neale and then play bench loop with Johnson into Wardlaw – it this could be Hayden Young who is a good option, but I don’t love that much… but instead, I’m ditching red dot rookie – he’s not even an emergency – in Sharp to Daniel Rich is where I’ve landed. Getting a defender is much better for my team for the next two bye rounds. Maybe it could still be Ratkins to Young, but the Rat could be handy next week… and I am getting rid of a red dot that is unlikely to come back in. Ahhh… this game!
