Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 6

Time to lock and load a captain for the round ahead.

Welcome back you bloody awesome legends to another edition of Calvin’s Captains.

We have limited VC options this week and I’m strongly recommended you look at the Friday night game or the 4:25pm games on Saturday.

THE LOOP HOLE

This is how it works….

  • Select a gun player playing Thursday/Friday night (or an early game) and give them the VC.
  • If that players scores well, put a non-playing player onto your ground and give them the “C”.
  • Make a bench player emergency as well.
  • The non-playing captain will score 0, meaning you VC score will be activated and doubled and the emergency player you selected, will also cover the zero as well. The emergency score will not double.
  • If you don’t like your VC score, simply select a captain as you normal would.

CALVIN’S TOP-10

#1 – Max Gawn v Richmond

Plays: Saturday night @ the MCG

Just keeps getting it down with his third straight 130+ score. It’s no surprise that Max is the No. 1 man in the game at the moment and is ripping up the MCG with previous scores of 131 and 132 there. In the past against Richmond he has a day out. Last year he scored 164 against them and prior to that he had 104, 112, 143 and 142.

This year against Nankervis, Rucks have scored well recently, with Lycett (101) and Hickey (85) scoring above par for their standards.

#2 – Zach Merrett v Collingwood

Plays: Sunday @ the MCG

Collingwood are the easiest to score against for MIDs at the moment and last week we saw the Eagles post some massive numbers against them. Duggan (148), Redden (142) and Gaff (131) all dominated them, but Tim Kelly (84) struggled as he copped attention from Levi Greenwood. Good news though! Greenwood will not play in this one, as he has been named out for the Pies after an injury last week – YAH!

Last week against the Pies, there were shitloads of marks and disposals to go around. Duggan, Redden and Gaff averaged 11 marks each as they also averaged 37 touches. THIS IS NUTS. Zach will be all over this.

Merrett loves playing the Pies too, a team he has scored 92, 108*, 124, 109*, 105 and 137 against in his most recent games.
*ANZAC Day games

#3 – Tom Mitchell v Adelaide

Plays: Sunday @ Utas Stadium (Launceston)

The Pig returns to Pig Park (Utas) and loves it there where he has averaged 131 across his career eight games. He has scored 105, 120, 117 and 125 in his last four games against the Crows but so far this year, they rank as one of the hardest for midfielders to score against.

The wheels will start to fall off for the Crows soon, as the Dockers defeated them last week with four players hitting 100+ against them.

#4 – Josh Dunkley v GWS

VC OPTION: Friday @ Manuka Oval (Canberra)

Now, I’m not chasing the 151 from last week, but I’ll remind you that Dunkley hasn’t dropped under 107 in his five games this year and he obviously has a massive ceiling!

He has only managed 89, 86 and 150 in his last three against the Giants but presents as a super VC option on Friday night.

#5 – Jack Macrae v GWS

VC OPTION: Friday @ Manuka Oval (Canberra)

131, 129, 107, 109 are J-Mac’s most recent scores against GWS.

His five scores this year have ranged between 103 and 135, as he continues to be at heaps of CBAs and keeps racking up the pill. Another VC beauty.

#6 – Brodie Grundy v Essendon

Plays: Sunday @ the MCG

Grundy hasn’t kept up with the scoring of Gawn but is still ticking it over at the same time with 120 and 93 in the last two weeks.

He’s up against 2m-Peter (Wright) who has been solid in the ruck for the Dons, holding McInerney (45) and Hickey (67) in recent weeks.

Grundy loves playing Essendon though with previous efforts of 141, 149, 123 and 122.

#7 – Jarryd Lyons v Carlton

Plays: Saturday @ Marvel Stadium

Ranking at #2 on form with an average of 124 in his last three, Lyons needs to get much more credit than he gets.

He hasn’t hit a ton against the Blues in his last three but has form on his side to get another big score.

#8 – Clayton Oliver v Richmond

Plays: Saturday night @ the MCG

When he’s not tagged, Oliver is as good as it gets and finds himself coming off 121 and 128.

He has scored 95, 103 and 106 in his last three against the Tigers, who are not as intimidating as they have been in the past.

#9 – Mitch Duncan v West Coast

VC OPTION: Early Saturday @ GMHBA Stadium

Averaging 110, Duncan has hit the ground running in 2021.

He has scored back to back 130 against the Eagles in his last two games and is a great VC option, playing first up on Saturday.

#10 – Andrew Gaff v Geelong

VC OPTION: Early Saturday @ GMHBA Stadium

Gaff sits at #3 on form with a nice 131 last week.

The Cats used to be a scary team to play at home, but this year things are different. He has scored 64, 120, 91 and 120 in his last four against them and off the wing last week, Stephenson (91) and Young (89) did enough against the Cats which implies, Gaff could be good again.

CONSIDER IT FLAGGED

Lachie Neale – Could cop attention from Ed Curnow who spent some time last week with Boak (82).

Jake Lloyd – We say it every year, but the Suns are the only team Lloyd has never scored 100 against, from eight attempts.

Andrew Brayshaw – The Roos have used Turner as a tagger in recent weeks and Brayshaw might cop it this week.

Christian Petracca – Never scored 100 against the Tigers in five attempts.

People don’t even want to hear the mans name in association with fantasy however, if he pumps out another 130plus score like he has twice in the last 3 weeks and coming up against a side which is nortoriously inaccurate (Fyfe 0.6) a variable feast of plus 3 kick ins. Forget about whether he gets a spot in your team surely he gets a mention in Calvin’s Captains. You know who I am talking about.

Macrae is my vc in fantasy, Dunkley in another comp. Mainly because I don’t have Dunkley in fantasy.

Cal, are we overlooking Andrew McGrath with a focus on Zach Merrett in the same way we overlook Lyons for Neale?
What is McGrath’s record against the Pies (and Anzac Day games) look like? His ceiling is higher than Zach’s to date in 2021.

BzG are you serious? McGrath is crap

There’s games every season he goes large, out pointing Zerrett…. Zerrett is more consistent tonning up. But…. if McGrath has history against the Pies, and given he’s out pointed Zerrett twice in 5 games this season…

Ceiling is probably secondary to basement for captain, you don’t want a guy who can drop random 50s and 60s on a semi regular basis.

Squids is actually talking sense for once

You realise how stupid that sounds? He’s out pointed zerrett in less than 50% of games this season, zerrett is more consistent toning up. So why pick McGrath?
