Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 17

Two new players hit his top 5 this week for the first time as Calvin strives to nail you the highest scoring player for the round

Welcome back you bloody legends.

Thought I’d mix things up again here and introduce the TOP 10 method again. It’s been a while and after hitting two injured captains in as many weeks, it’s time to hake things up a little. All the best.

CALVIN’S TOP 10

#1 – Jack Macrae v Melbourne @ MRVL

Last week, Jack didn’t even appear in my top 10 and managed 109 against the Cats, but this game is going to be much easier. Melbourne have now given up the third most points to opposition midfielders since round 10.

Last week, Curnow (111), Silvagni (109) and Walsh (98) all scored well for their standards. The week before is what caught my eye. Zorko (143), Lyons (135) and Neale (122) all had a day out against the Demons and this should be the case for Macrae here.

He scored 133 and 107 in his last games against them and plays under the roof again. A ground he has scored 17×100+ scores in his last 19 games, with seven of them being over 130 (that’s 37%). His ceiling alone should excite you enough here especially with 109, 180 and 140 coming in his most recent visits to Marvel.

Small flag… is a very tiny chance of a tag from Harmes. Highly doubt this will happen, but he did go to Fyfe a few weeks ago, but as I said… very unlikely to see this here.

#2 – Tom Rockliff v Brisbane @ AO

The pig has a ceiling like only a few others. 150 last week and 204 in the SANFL before that. He is back!

Against his old side, he has never really delivered with scores of 43 and 78. But that’s a thing of the past. He is back at home where he has scored 150, 109, 149, 107, 132 and 115 in his last six games.

Brisbane have been tough though, but I think Port can win.

Last week, Coniglio (146) was only the third midfielder to score 110+ against the Lions since round 14.

However, the pig is back and needs to be respected at his own sty.

#3 – Josh Dunkley v Melbourne @ MRVL

How can you look past a guy who has scored 120, 121, 118, 115, 158, 119 and 119 in his most recent games. Add to this, he has averaged 132 in his last five games at Marvel and meets the #3 easiest team to score against.

Form = tick. Ground = tick. Opponent = tick. No tag = tick. Captain = tick.

#4 – Andrew Gaff v Collingwood @ OS

Gaff scored 97 and 109 against the Pies last year but it’s worth noting, these games were at the MCG.

This Friday night he meets them at a ground he smashes. However, I’d like to have him higher but on their day, the Pies can be restrictive. Rules seem to be thrown out the window on things like this over in the West but last week, Sicily was the only Hawk to score 100+ against Collingwood.

#5 – Brad Crouch v Gold Coast @ MS

As we know and say every week, the Suns give up the most points to midfielders this year and the trend hasn’t slowed down.

The thing here is, you need to avoid the Sheer tag who has held Dusty (58) and Lloyd (48) in recent weeks. Brad sits behind Sloane, Laird and Matt to receive this. In his last three games against the Suns he has scored 114, 119 and 121, and despite his form being down with 92 and 104 in his last two games, expect things to change here. A huge unique option!

#6 – Tim Taranto v Richmond @ the MCG

Kelly potentially out. Coniglio sore. Enter: TT.

Richmond sit as the 5th easiest for MIDs to score on since round 10 and Taranto thrives with more responsibility. He scored 130 and 96 on the MCG this year, and last week in a 92 point flogging to the Tigers, the Sun’s David Swallow still managed 102.

#7 – Max Gawn v Bulldogs @ MRVL

Injured? Hey, if he’s fit, he plays and needs to be considered. But if you are looking this far down my list then Max is still your best option at #7.

In his last two games against the Dogs he has scored 108 and 141 and lets remember, they give up the most points to opposition rucks this year… by a long way. Last week, Stanley had the fourth highest score for the Cats against the Dogs with 98 and not too long ago we saw Lycett (140) and our ruckpig Brodie Grundy score 168 and 153. Will be nasty if he’s ok.

#8 – Brayden Fiorini v Adelaide @ MS

Form is down but he did have 126 against the Crows earlier this year and this one is at home. The Crows are the second easiest team to score on at the moment and this game should see some impressive numbers.

#9 – Jake Lloyd v Carlton @ the SCG

Not really loving it at the SCG this year where he has only managed 1×110+ score (6 games). If he can avoid attention for Silvagni, he should have a day out like he did last time he played the Blues when he had 120.

#10 – Zach Merrett v Kangaroos @ MRVL

How will he bounce back from his head knock last week? If you think he’s good, then move him up a few spots on where he sits here.

Zach scored 143 on the Roos this year already and even had 106, 96 and 143 before that. Last week the Roos beat the Saints rather convincingly but… Steele (132), Billings (128) and Dunstan (119) all found plenty of it. Zach will get off the hook here for a big one if he’s fully over that knock.

THE OTHERS…

Once again, in order of when these guys play for those who like to Loop Hope in Draft.

Brodie Grundy v West Coast @ Optus – Nic Nat is good. Very good. Even playing just 50% TOG he has restricted Sandilands (40) and Lobb (45), and the week before that McEvoy (69) and Ceglar (70). Grundy played against the Eagles (Vardy) twice last year for 122 and 99 in the Grand Final.

Adam Treloar v West Coast @ Optus – No Hutchings should be nice for a change, although Sidey usually cops that one. He has scored 98 and 115 on the Eagles in his last two but the Eagles are on fire at the moment and last week they gave up 0x100+ to the Dockers and only 4×100+ scores to MIDs since round 11.

Luke Parker v Carlton @ the SCG – Should get some attention from Silvagni who went hard at Oliver early last week before he ran free for 116. Parker had his worst game for the year against the Blues earlier this year when he managed just 18d (68pts).

Nat Fyfe v Hawthorn @ UTas – Howe tag? Why not, he’s sore and can’t find much of it anyway at the moment and managed just 61 on the Eagles last week. He hates playing the Hawks where he hasn’t hit 100 in his last five games, making them one of his worst teams. Doubtful even to play in Tassie.

Matt Crouch v Gold Coast @ Metricon – Richmond had 4×115+ last week against the Suns so surely Matt gets involved in that. He had 108 on them this year but his form has been down a touch with scores of 90 and 95.

Rory Sloane v Gold Coast @ Metricon – Sheer tag! Sloane has scored 125, 132 and 106 in his last three against the Suns and should be Sheer’s No. 1 target.

Patrick Dangerfield v St Kilda @ GMHBA – Danger has played the Saints 15 times in his career and during that time he has only managed 2×100+ scores. Amazingly, his worst team to score against.

Tim Kelly v St Kilda @ GMHBA – Could be tagged by Jack Steele.

Dusty Martin v GWS @ the MCG – 68 earlier this year, but will obviously avoid a Matt De Boer tag this time. GWS still sit as the #1 hardest for MIDs.

Clayton Oliver v Bulldogs @ MRVL – Bulldogs = #2 hardest for MIDs. No thanks.

For round 17, I will be giving my big "C" to...
