tbetta’s Bullets: Round 8

Round 8 was a much more productive week for fantasy coaches than the Great Scoring Drought of the last month! I’m firing my Bullets as usual this week – I check out the Replacements, Real Junk Time, Cheap Players, my battle with M0nty, and the Makers and Breakers of the weekend just gone!

  • About Time

After a lean month, I’m glad to say that things are returning to the status quo. Most of our players are on the park, our Captain has returned, and our Guns are starting to put up the scores that their hefty price-tags warrant. Sure, we had Gibbs, Duigan, Curnow, Judd, Murphy and Yarran off with the bye, but after the MBR’s and the Pies bye, this barely registered as an obstacle for most coaches. How quickly we adapt!

Overall, this was a much better week for coaches than in recent times, with the majority scoring in the 1900s and a fair chunk on the brighter side of 2000.

  • The True Definition of Junk Time

I, like many other coaches, was following the Western Derby’s live scoring on Fanfooty ( I also watched the game live – how good were the Eagles?!) as it was the last match of the round, and inherently decided a lot of match-ups over Round 8. With time winding down and the result beyond doubt, it was just a matter of collecting the trash until the siren blew.

But none has junked it as heavily as Nat Fyfe did, kicking a snap over his shoulder for a goal with 1 second remaining! Apparently, this +9 affected a few results, as the DTers unleashed on the Fanfooty chat log! Check it out here if you want a chuckle.

  • The Replacements

Late changes continue to affect teams. This week Milburn, Hurley, Pittard, Embley, Kerr and Balantyne were a few players to exit teams at the last minute, always making it tough on coaches. Especially Embley, who has been in great form this year, but couldn’t take to the field because he injured his hamstring in the warm-up. Kerr was also a big out, especially for those who took the leap of faith during the week after his 110.

But where there are Outs, there must be Ins. After some confusion, Michael Hibberd came in for his 2nd game, scoring 72 across halfback. Youngsters Pitt, Christenson and Gaff all came in to their respective sides, although none scored well enough to make any serious cash.

I should also mention that Jobe Watson may need replacing next week after his hammy was iced up midway through Saturday’s game. With the bye in two weeks, it was make sense that he would take this week off to get a decent rest. Watch this space.

  • Drop Knee

Every now and then I use the Bullets as an avenue to take out my frustration on some of the issues with the game. Watching the Essendon-Brisbane clash on Saturday evening had me hanging out for Monday morning so I could put this into words: Monfries, man up and play some footy! Stop dropping your knees and playing for free kicks you girl!

There. That feels better. Watching his game had my so frustrated I could barely enjoy my Boags. I mean, if you’re going to be a cheap footballer, at least duck your head or something – the umpires, to their credit, are all over that at the moment. But you put them, and opposition players, in a terrible position when you just drop to your knees searching for high contact. It’s despicable.

Don’t get my wrong, it’s not just Monfries. Milne and Betts are also repeat offenders. Doesn’t mean that it should be part of the game.

  • The Full M0nty

This week in the All-Stars League I went head-to-head with m0nty of Fanfooty fame. Apart from running the most popular and successful live scoring site for fantasy AFL, he’s a great bloke and a clever Dreamteamer.

Anyway, he had quite a good week, with Chaplin scoring 112 and Shaw (whom he just traded in) with 124, along with Stevie J’s 127. With Sunday’s game to go, he had 141 points up on me to go with Mitchell and Conca, against my Fyfe and Boyd as Captain. Very close stuff.

Here’s where I admit that I didn’t learn my lesson last week when I said never change your Captain last minute. I had Swanny with the Big C all week, but I got spooked big time with the 1) Friday night match 2) Quality opponent in Geelong and 3) Wet weather, and hastily changed it to Boyd just prior to lock-out. As we know, Swan finished with 115 (after being on 104 at 3Q time, around the same time I was swearing at the tv and throwing my stubby holder across the room) and I was left to wait to Sunday to find out if my move was successful. But I was also sweating on Boyd posting a big score for my league match with m0nty!

To my delight, he was as solid as ever, scoring 120 (which was later amended to 115), and Mitchell was locked down with 61. That left Fyfe to bypass 45, and I was home-free.

Moral of the story – DON’T CHANGE CAPTAIN LAST MINUTE! I would have had the exact same result with Swanny as Captain, but with half the stress.

  • Makers and Breakers

MAKERS:

1. Ablett 156

2. Hodge 132

3. Suckling 133

4. Shaw 124

5. Nahas 119

Number one spot this week goes to a player who would have regularly topped this list for the past 3 or 4 years, Gary Ablett Jnr. He was magnificent against the Crows, especially in the first term where he notched up 14 touches and slammed 3 goals to give the Suns an early advantage. While he couldn’t carry them to a victory, he kept them competitive and lead from the front. He is a superstar. He’s now price at 404k with a healthy BE, so after Round 9 is the perfect time to acquire him if that’s the way you want to go. The runner up is Hodge, who has had a terrible season so far, but bounced back and earned a long overdue 132 in a BOG performance. I wonder if this is a turning point, or an aberration in what will continue to be a disappointing season? With Jack Grimes out for the season, two of the most popular replacements were Suckling and Shaw. Both dominated, posting 133 and 124 respectively. Both are playing a zoning, spare-man sort of a role, which may be the only potent DT scoring style that we’ve seen from defenders so far this year. Unfortunately, the forward tag is a killer for that kind of scoring, so let’s hope it stays away. Rounding out the list is the increasingly impressive Nahas, who backed up his recent performances with a 119 against quality opposition in the Bulldogs. Incredibly, he has the highest 3-Round average with 131, topping Geelong star Selwood, who is next best with 126.33.

BREAKERS:

1. Goddard 54

2. Didak 60

3. Mitchell 61

4. B. Smith 11

5. Dal Santo 51

While there were many impressive scores this week, there were a few stinkers from some big names, which make up the majority of this week’s list. The biggest sinner was Goddard (see what I did there?), who is continuing his shocking form deeper into the season that any of us expected. He has dropped 120k now since Round 1, and if you were one of those coaches who I scoffed at when I learned you traded him out early, I take it back. It was a good call as it turns out, because he is bleeding cash while he serves up these dirty scores. Continuing the theme is Didak, who has been way down on last year’s production, and has dropped 79k accordingly. He only generated 60 points on Friday night, which is probably due to the Pies tweaking their forward line this year, with Dawes and Cloke forming an effective scoring combination. Mitchell was locked down by Clinton Jones on Sunday, and as a result only scored the 61, ending his previously unbeaten run of tons so far this year. Brodie Smith (sorry mate, not you fault) gets a spot on the list for his heavily sub-affected 11. Normally I wouldn’t consider a sub, but with Gibbs and Duigan out for many teams, his score would have affected a lot of league matchups. Completing the list is Dal Seagull who, in line with St Kilda’s woes, only managed 51. The entire Saints outfit is in disarray, but if they want to get back on track and salvage their season, it has to come from guys like Dal, Montagna and Goddard.

  • A Gloomy Week

No suns this week, so get your team sorted now! Hopefully you can use the DPP of Prestia to cover any doughtnuts this week, and you have sufficient cover for Harris, Matera, Swallow, McKenzie, Stanley and Toy. Normally I would recommend you downgrade one over the next two weeks, but none seem to have have reached their peak, with McKenzie ($238,700, Avg. 70.7, BE 52) the closest I can see.

On the flipside, you have two weeks to trade in gun forward Tom Lynch if you desire. With scores of 92 and 95 to go with a BE of -92, he is looking like a very tasty downgrade option in the forward line!

Until next week.

Israel Folou might be able to take up his mantle nd challenge him for this title next year. Apparently he’s three times behind where Karmichael was this time last year. That might give him an average of about 6?

Either of the above would be good, assuming Poo gets his third game. With his performance and Hawk’s injuries there is a good chance.

I agree. Watching Duigan against the saints I couldnt believe so many players wanted to trade him. He may not go up to premium price but he’s a very good 7th or 8th back. I’m happy to keep the faith as long as Brett Ratten does.

I would keep stanley , his been play’n well ( BTW stanley has the bye this come’n round ;) )

I would trade Lower out , or wait a week or two then trade lower out

do you have a mid you can trade down and upgrade lower ( well thats what im doing btw)

eg, trade one of your mids ( cash cows) to say to Isaac Smith ( if named)

I am keen to look at Luke Parker from Sydney over Smith. With G Rohan out for the season Sydney need to blood players and he looks a jet.

I am only trading 3 more players to downgrades and I am done, the 3rd is Muzngu and that might not happen and I don’t need it to.

Toy to Poops (Gilham out = Poo’s in) then Lower to Fisher. I will have Stanley, Poo, Buckley.

Buckley needs one more game to fatten up so I can get Jacobs and $$ next week. Or Port put Jacobs back in the two’s for a few more weeks and I will get Jacobs later.

Question: Is Tom Lynch too expensive???? I think no because he could be a keeper????

    Team Name : G-Bangers United

All things being equal and Isaac Smith is selected and should be … he gives Hawthorn the extra leg speed they’ve been needing … then Heath Scotland will make his debut for me this week in replacement of Nick Lower who’s position is looking shakier by the week … after watching the game y’day he doesn’t work hard enuff to find his own football for my liking … Thankyou Nick and best of luck but hello Heath !

me im keeping swall all year for bench, but to have dpp link i’d go jacobs or hibberd, jacobs better JS in port i’d reckon,

and i’d go lynch from suns up fwd over any downgrade target, problem is the suns do your head in rotating players in and out of the side so you can never count on suns player to be there when you need cover.

Got 328,800 in the bank and looking to upgrade Pittard and one of Tappy or Darling too. Thinking of one of the below options:

    Pittard-Mundy/Rockliff, Tapscott- Didak/Dawes or Darling-Cloke/Fyfe
    Pittard-Boyd, Tapscott-Dawes or Darling-Cloke
    Pittard- Thompson, Tapscott-Cloke or Darling-Chapman

Any feedback on who you feel the best combo would be would be awesome. Thanks

    YAY…..

Watson out injured is general good news for most.

Most in top 100 have Watson in their team and going forward that they have to trade out Grimes, Curnow & now Watson, in addition to downgrading to get I Smith, Puop & Hib this week then Lynch next week, meaning they will have a weakened midfield.

YAY to injuries to a premium as it flips strategies outlined weeks ago on its head…

I hope Swannie + Sandi gets injured this week…….

1: Its a 2-3 week injury, so most likely 3 weeks as they will not risk him.

2: Going to have to trade him out later anyway because they have the bye in Rd 24.

3: Watson to Ablett isnt a bad trade at all. After this week of course.

Thats 3 reasons to trade him out. Good enough for me.

weighing up two trade scenarios that will pan out over the next few weeks…both of which involve the acquisition of G ablett in round 10.

    SCENARIO 1
    round 9
    Prestia –> smith
    B smith –>suckling

    SCENARIO 2

    matera/tapscott –> smith
    B smith –> carazzo

option 1 brings in an unproven but seemingly up and coming gun in suckling. also leaves me with secure back up for my forward line in tapscott and matera. option two brings in a proven gun in carazzo who can tag and rack up possessions like the old kane cornes but leaves me with slightly less secure cover in my forward line. keeping in mind darling is currently my 7th forward. thoughts?

Yeah I like the look of Lynch, but does anyone have a view on his JS v other Suns talls.

Currently Z.Smith would seem to be a lock in ruck. Then Dixon, Fraser and Gorringe are all out with short term injuries. Fraser has been disappointing, Sam Day looks a bit off the pace at the moment compared to Dixon.

Lynch and Sam Day are playing at the same time, so presumably Dixon and Lynch could still play together as forwards with one of Fraser / Gorringe playing as second ruck to support Smith when required. Plus it would seem reasonable to have their ruck playing a kick behind the ball and assisting the vulnerable defence rather than trying to get forward – therefore they would need extra talls forward.

But this would mean playing 4 talls where most of their games to date they seem to have played only 3. But Lynch seems to be pretty mobile for a big guy.

What do the other expert coaches out there think?

I’m Spewing about Watson’s injury and never have asked for thoughts on here but here goes… My current mids look like this: Boyd,Selwood,Bartel,Murphy,Sylvia,Watson(Liber,Harris,Hibberd) I will be downgrading Darling or Tappy this week to Smith and swapping him and Sylvia around benching Smith and running Liber. I was then going to upgrade Liber to Swan or Pendles after the Pies next bye. Should I keep Watson benched for the next 2-3 weeks or trade him out now and keep a strong midfield??

    G’day tbetta,

    My planned trades this week:

    Trade 1: Otten > Jacobs
    Trade 2: Harris > Mundy/Selwood

I’m planning to go unique and is Mundy a good option as he might win the brownlow yet only 10, 000 teams have him? Or is Selwood the better pick from the two? What do you think of Otten > Jacobs?

    • Avatar

      tbetta

      May 16, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Otten to Jacobs is a good bet, Jacob will play most of the games for the rest of the season. He is too classy and Port is too average for the not to play talented youngster. Has the ability and JS, so solid option.

Between Mundy and Selwood, all that really separates them is, as you, how unique they are. Mundy is a great option, ultra consistent but has just peaked in price ($428,700). Joel Selwood is back to his starting price ($444,300) and is having a great season so far, averaging 120 without his 27, which would have him at 2nd in the league.

Basically, there’s no wrong option – both are great players to get in.

still struggling with injury and form, i’d skip him unless your short of cash, he is good value even for his poor form you could do much worse for that money but with more money you could do a lot better too

Ok I’ve got Redden in as one of my premiums but the past 2 weeks he’s been pissing me off with his scores. Do I get rid of him before his value goes down or do I persist with him and hope he gets back to what his average says? I could upgrade him to any midfielder. Currently have Swan, Pendles, Boyd and Selwood as premiums.

Redden is still young so like any youngster he will have inconsistent weeks and could possibly slow as the season progresses. Keep him this week on the merits that the Lions play north and he should deffinately be racking up touches and tackles.

yea i’ve got redden too. I think its time to trade him.
      He’s a premium and he’s scored 64 and 75
Thats well below what he should be getting

you’ve only been pissed off with him for 2 weeks mate, ive been pissed of with boak all season! u shouldn’t be trading him, or at the very least, making it the last trade u do… boaks lost me like millions it seems like, but price shouldn’t matter when u have a *premium* as they will be there in ur side all year.

hasn’t he had tagging roles? he should pick up again against lesser opponents but then again if he is the designated tagger is he worth having? still how many “premiums” are there this year scoring garbage, answer too many

Mzungu is still a coupla weeks off I think. He won’t come straight back in then Freo has a bye round 15? so it’s gonna take a while for him to make money. Hibberd/Jacobs/Smith/Wallis/LukeParker/someone else might make decent cash over the next eight weeks and be there to cover for outs or their DPP will mean you have quality over the field. Mzungu has gotta come in and kill it straight away for that kind of plan to make more money for you than those guys – even if he does a Curnow it will be ten weeks from now I reckon before you see a worthwhile return that would be better than these players will get. Otherwise he has to cover some unexpected injuries (that you can’t predict now so it’s a raffle). Eggs in the one basket imo.

Sam Iles is gonna keep going up tho you missed his first dollars and he’s out this week.

Says two weeks on the AFL injury list from last week and Freo’s bye is round 16…

He’d have to come back in to the first team no earlier than round 12 or 13 if he’s still gotta miss this week – they won’t pick him to play straight after one WAFL game I guess – hope I’m not sounding too obvious here – so he’s gotta score >100s for his first three games to jump 100k.

        Just for a comparison:

Ed Curnow put on 80 000 after his third game then climbed another 80k to round 6 before inj in rd7

Cam O’Shea (Avg 54 – not special) put on 60 000 over six rounds before getting injured/dropped whatever
Jack Darling (Avg77) made three mid60s then the 100 then had a bye so was up 90k after four matches stayed there for one then put on another 90k to now

the other options have all gotta be a Bewick or Mzungu has gotta be a Curnow – maybe that’s two baskets to put your eggs in. Otherwise just grab someone who is doing the job now.

with the hawks getting so many injuries lately, surely isaac and every other rook they blood at the moment will be able to hold their spots… no zungu this week, i’ll get isaac in for tapscott instead & just wait for zungers to get a game first

Well I’m thinking of going to Mundy, Mitchell, Montagna or Watson (when fit). Ah I dont know…..Perhaps I’ll give him one more week to prove me wrong.
