  1. Im posting this to help out some of the people posting teams in here. Ive copied it from somewhere else, and its written by someone far better than me at DT. I think its the best bit of DT advice Ive seen in a loing time. Hope it helps….

“On ******** comments on trades, I found that sometimes your rookie appreciation doesn’t quite cut it, and you can’t get into the cheap underpriced mid, and you have to do a 3 trade upgrade on a few occasions. I also think 14 premiums is probably unlikely given the wide pool of players and inflated early prices. I could see 13, a few in the midrange area, the rest rookies. This would leave probably 3 x 2 trade upgrades for midrange, 3 x 2 trade upgrades for the good rookies that go the way you want, and 3 x 3 trade upgrades for the ones that flubber a bit. 21 trades, means you can probably afford to make 3 errors. Like trading Sandilands in and out a few times.
the split would be 13 prems, 3 mid price, 14 rookies. And because I haven’t even done a side (won’t even start until the NAB is in full swing), I’m not sure that you can afford even that. Might need a few slightly sub premiums to be part of it – but the sort of premiums that need to be top 10 defender/forward material. I’m being very honest when I say that you can put them wherever you like and it probably won’t make a huge difference, so long as your midpricers improve, your prems hold their ground (and more importantly put a score on the board) and the rookies appreciate so you can cash cow them up into the prem zone. 3 mid price is the hard area to work out, it’s probably where the whole thing is won and lost. Everyone needs to gamble somewhere. Most will spread their losses probably in the forward and back divisions. Forward looks the spot where people will place 2 and defence 1. I’m still considering rucks for one midrange, and personally not really considering midfield for any. That said a player such as Coniglio could be considered a low-end midrange (rather than pure rookie) who will be held as the final upgrade target. Also you might want to classify rookies as a few different grades, because from true rookie upgrades (90k or thereabouts) and the Marty Clarke/Coniglio/Porplyzia (180k) there’s a heckuva difference. Certainly not something too many people have been analysing when they put so much energy in working out who out of Selwood or Pendlebury will score better. Who cares? They are set and forget prems. The rookies will find you out if you don’t get them bang on.”

I should also point out……when people speak of Guns + Rookies, its best to have some extra sub levels of classification. I use these and players in brackets are examples of what I mean…

    Elite(Swan)
    Premium(Dal Santo)
    Mid-pricer/Fallen Premium(Gaff/Hayes)
    Premium Rookie(Coniglio)
    Rookie(Gibson)

Feel free to pick this apart, but I hope it helps some people out there…

    • good read, completly agree with the premiums set and forget, haven’t changed them since my original team, have only changed rookies, Good find mate :)

    • Great post DS. DT logic articulated very well.

    • do you think gibson is worth getting

    • “people… put so much energy in working out who out of Selwood or Pendlebury will score better. Who cares? They are set and forget prems. The rookies will find you out if you don’t get them bang on.”

This is spot on and it’s something a lot of people overlook. Your team is comprised of 30 players, not 22. This is why I’m so reluctant to start a rookie ruck, because I know I’ll be wasting my R4 spot if I do.

      • Interesting comment? This year similar to last presents the possibility that perhaps up to 3 or 4 rookie rucks could realistically find early game time (scoring/earning potential) One or two of those… Giles/Stephenson with potential to earn/score sufficiently to justify the second ruck position. Provided and obviously here is the risk…. one of Witts, Rowe, Longer, Redden (and maybe a couple of others)also gain selection early, then I dont see how by selecting one of these rooks in R4 your selection is wasted? All going well you will have a keeper R2 with a viable R3 on the bench after Round 13 as cover. I guess this is the “balls” in the Rookie R2 strategy……and hopefully the 250 – 300k you spent early on to allow upgrade of M4 from Hayes to Murphy/Selwood has paid dividends in scoring as well as avoided the need for additional trade in upgrade of midfield position, down the track???……………….”Best laid plans of mice and men”……………….Lol

        • @duffmeister Yes, I think Giles certainly has the potential to score well enough to justify being named as your second ruckman. Stephenson we’re yet to see but he does play in a high scoring team so he should score decently as well. My problem with it is that I’d be spending 100k on a player, whether it be Witts, Derickx, Redden, etc. who I’m almost certain won’t play that much. It’s a waste of money, because a player who isn’t playing isn’t making you any money, so there’s zero value in what you’ve spent. If I were confident that one of them will get a game on a regular basis, then starting Giles becomes a lot more enticing.

          • Stimulating discussion! Would it be illogical (logic has never been my strong point) to suggest the value is earned up front with the decision to spend only $114k on an R2 who eventually averages around the 80 – 85 point mark with increased price of around $400k. Ie: you are able to spend extra dollars in other positions (hopefully keepers) early? Assume Stephenson is R4 in two premo ruck strategy even if he makes the extra $300k you will probably look to downgrade to utilise the cash on upgrading to premo anyway? Does this make sense?????

          • Possibly, but that’s the same with every position isn’t it? If you picked up Heppell from the start for example there’s instant value there. I think the difference though is that if I had a throwaway fourth ruck, I’d be inclined to compare it to rookies in other positions. “What if I’d had Giles and Stephenson, on the bench, then I’d be able to pick Morris/Neale/Cameron/whoever instead of being stuck with Witts. I get that a lot of people want to take advantage of the strength of the ruck rookies by playing them on the field, but I don’t think Giles or Orren are going to score significantly higher than a rookie in another position if you choose them right. Maybe that’s the attraction – because the ruck rookies are so obvious there’s really no chance of you getting it wrong and being stuck with a Relton Roberts.

  2. Heppell + Brown + FWD rook

    or

    Clarke + Pavlich + Porplyzia

  3. which 2

    gibson, pfeiffer, sheil, or neale

  4. Def: Goddard Birchall Heppel Conca Hargrave Smedts Darley (Brown, Wilkes)

Mid: Pendlebury Ablett Boyd Selwood NVB Mcdonald (Neale, Kavanagh)

    Ruck: Sandilands Giles (Stephensen, Rowe)

Forwards: Franklin Beams Zaha Martin Christensen Porplyzia Walsh (Skinner, Kerridge)

Thoughts guys? still iffy on parts of it though

    • A very solid team. Potentially with a heap of merit, depending on your strategy & degree of risk preparedness. My only query (& it’s strictly a personal thing) would be your forwards & rucks. I’m not sold on the ability of all three of Beams, Zaharakis, or Christensen to deliver. Will Beams play a whole season this year & what will his role be? How are Zaharakis’ knees (he did play on the weekend; but was nursed through)? Christensen is only a second year player with a handful of games to his name; will he be able to justify the 330K he is currently commanding? Porpylzia evidently has a calf injury & has considerable history of bad luck with injuries. I would not go near him; others may disagree. I also think there are possibly more consistent types than Skinner & Walsh to choose from. I’m not in favour of the sole premium ruck approach. Again it’s a personal thing, but I wouldn’t be selecting Sandilands at all (& especially not as sole premium ruck). There are younger, more agile, up & coming ruckmen, that for me, make for far better ruck options. If you are sold on sole premium ruck I would suggest downgrading somewhere & splashing the cash on Cox (who was very, very impressive on the weekend). There is no guarantee Rowe will even get a game with Warnock, Hampson & Kruezer in the fold. Evidently Kruezer will be playing a lot more forward this year & only supporting in the ruck (i.e. the role Rowe would play if MK didn’t own the spot).

      • Thanks Vishnu, Gave it a look, what do you reckon about this team?

Def: Goddard, Birchall, Heppell, Conca, Hargraves, Smedts, Darley (Brown, Wilkes)

  7. Hey guys this is my team so far, looking for some suggestions and possible improvements:) Also, I was wondering if anyone knew how to change a team name on the dt talk site, as mine is from last year and I am not sure on how to do that.

DEF: Goddard, Birchall, Deledio, Grimes, Hargrave, CLarke, Morris (Bugg, Brown)

MID: Swan, Boyd, Rockliff, Ablett, Macdonald, Shiel (gibson, Treloar)

    RUCK: Cox, Giles, (rowe, Stephenson)

  9. Team name: Big V Superstars

Team going along nicely and using the Assistant Coach articles for some useful tips and reading other teams. Constructive criticism please!! Team A v Team B?

    TEAM A:
DEF: Goddard, Deledio, Heppell, Grimes, Lake, Clarke, Ellis (Morris, Brown)
MID: Swan, Ablett, Murphy, Thompson, McDonald, Miles (Treolar, Neale)
    RUC: Luey, McEvoy (Giles, Stephensen)
FWD: Buddy, Goodes, Martin, Sidey, Christensen, Smedts, Walsh (Zorko, Rowe)
    CASH LEFT: $5000

    TEAM B:
DEF: Goddard, Deledio, Heppell, Broughton, Grimes, Clarke, Ellis (Morris, Brown)
MID: Swan, Ablett, Mitchell, Murphy, Clifton, Miles (Pfeiffer, McDonald)
    RUC: Cox, Giles (Stephensen, Rowe)
FWD: Franklin, Goodes, Fyfe, Sidey, Christensen, Smedts, Walsh (Zorko, Hampton)
    CASH LEFT: $18, 100

Bye Week Analysis: (from Assistant Coach Analyser)
    R11: 1/3/2/2=8
    R12: 4/1/1/6=12
    R13: 4/4/1/1=10

What do you think of the latter team and any improvements and player v player:
    Rockliff v Mitchell
Fyfe v Martin (R12 is going to hurt my forward line a lot)
    Swan v Boyd,
Clifton v Shiel (on a moon boot last Saturday night)

Any recommendations will be excellent :)

    • I don’t like the Leuey/McEvoy combo. By year’s end I still think Cox is a must, so I am inclined to etiher start with him, or start with only one ruck keeper.

      • I disagree. I think this year will see players like Leuenberger, McEvoy & Mumford bridging the gap between them & Dean Cox. Cox is still a complete standout. However, this year I don’t think the gap will be as apparent between him & these younger (but mature bodied) up & coming ruckmen.

        • When you combine Cox’s scoring potential and his durability, I can’t see any other ruckman getting close TBH. Cox scored nearly 2400 points last season. The only other ruckman I can see averaging over 100 is Sandilands, and he has durability issues, so I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to suggest Cox might end up 200+ points ahead of the second best ruckman.

          • You are spot on Giants!! Come finals you will be wanting the best two ruckmen. Cox will be one of them but Im not sure of the second one.
I think for me the best plan is to start with Cox and then a rookie as second ruck, then upgrade when we have a better idea of who the next best we be. There are a few options so rather than getting it wrong I’ll wait and see.
Unfortunately I have 211 at the moment!! I better go find some extra cash!!!
….and I thought I would touch my side for a week!!!
You were right Rainman!!! Again!!!! Haha

  10. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK –

    TEAM NAME: JW YELLOW DEVILS

DEF: Goddard, Shaw, Deledio, Waters, Grimes, M Clarke, Ellis (Bugg, Morris)
MID: Pendlebury, Boyd, Stanton, Bartel, A. Hayes, D Shiel (Hampton, Mitchell)
    RUC: Sandilands, Giles (Witts, Stephensen)
FWD: Franklin, Cloke, Martin, N Riewoldt, Brown, D Smith, Saad (Pfeiffer, Skinner)
    CASH LEFT: $3,200

Still not sure on some Rookies like pfeiffer, mitchel and their are a lot of mid rookies i am looking at so i might downgrade bartel and use the cash later on in the season or something.

let me know if i have missed a good rookie too or any suggestions you have

  11. Someone please rate my team! Thanks

DEF: Goddard, Deledio, Waters, Lake, Howard, Hargrave, Mohr (Bugg, Morris)
MID: Pendlebury, Boyd, Ablett, Mitchell, McDonald, Treloar (Gibson, Shiel)
    RUC: Leuenburger, Jacobs (Giles, Stephensen)
FWD: Chapman, Franklin, Pavlich, Martin, Christensen, D Smith, Hampton (Zorko, Kennedy)
    CASH LEFT: $300

    • i was going to pick Lake and Hargrave too

but I think now that we should only pick one of them and the bye round 11 will kill your DEF,

Christensen I that will kill it this year and I think you need Fyfe

      • I don’t think the bye is that important with the mid-pricers. If they don’t put up keeper scores then they can just be traded out, if they do then they’ve more than made up for the resulting zero.

    • DEF- Too many Bulldogs and Waters is still having an ongoing issue with his elbow.
MID- Simular to most, looks good.
RUCK- Round 11 bye will hurt, you will miss Giles, Leuenberger and Jacobs.
FWD- Pretty solid, Chapman is very unique this year, but still a good selection.

FWD: Franklin, Fyfe, Martin, Petrie, Winderlich, Byrnes, Saad (Zorko, Walsh)

    please comment and rate

    • your backs might be a little weak having Grimes as your 4th defender, But if he stays injury free your good, Byrnes is a iffy player, personally i would downgrade him to a rookie. (that could help upgrade Grimes).

I have considered the byes and i have changed my team considering what do you think now ?

  16. Does anyone else think that the First 10 DT talk group banner on the homepage is quite misleading? You could easily be fooled into thinking that the people who finish in the top 10 of the DT talk group win an Ipad.

  17. Trivia question: What player is in everyone’s team that played 1 more game than S.Higgins in 2011?

  18. Jarred Mcveigh just on the radio here saying Tony Armstrong has had knee surgery in the off season and is a month behind the group, also unlikely for round 1.

  39. Anyone have big enough balls to take a punt on Hamish Hartlett? has had a injury riddeled career but he managed something like 16 games last year for an average of around 90, he is an absolute gun, Ports best player IMO (not hard to do). He was a very high draft pick for a reason, could have a massive year if he stays injury free, around about the price of Shuey, Slone. Personally im not going to risk it, just putting the thought out there

  42. As a parting shot before bed after a red too many..any great team can be decimated by injuries to key players, resting of key players,..just a bit of bad luck on the way. Conversely, pick some good ones who stay on the park….

  43. @adamant

Mate hard to say without seeing your structure and understanding your strategy for the year….however based on numbers.

Lenny – priced at 72, last 2 full seasons he had didn’t average under 106 (I think) has a good draw especially early, he will score well and will make you at least $100 k. The cons are obvious, knee holding up, he is getting older.

Sloane – Thomson and NVB should cop most of the attention from opposition teams ( not to say this will negatively affect their scoring, ESP thommo) and if this guy is as good as I think he is I think he will really shine. Plays a similar style to thommo and just looks like the man in waiting. Cons are he just doesn’t live up to it and not sure of the impact of sando.

Shuey- man this kid can play. I think it was TKOL that brought up the point the other day. With Le Cras going down and his mooted move to the mids it now means that whoever was going to run with Frenchy will now be running with the Shue. He has already made a name and because he is so much more of a kicker than Sloane, he in my mind would be viewed as more dangerous ( think Rich for Bris ). Having said all of that everything is primed for him to explode.

My random thoughts, not sure if any of it helped :)

    • lots of DT talk strategies employed in this team. looks pretty balanced and could perform well… I would maybe worry about the forward line but just my opinion. if those rookies come good then you have less worries.

    • Theres a couple of things I would consider

      1. You may be pulling your hair out with that back line. Broughton, Gilbert and Hargrave are all a bit of a risk. I had broughton last year and he frustrated the hell out of me. Maybe choose one or two of them and swap one for someone a bit more reliable

      2. Morabito is listed as doubtfull for the beginning of the season. Could be a good downgrade target

      3. Your fwd rookies look a bit iffy with Saad and skinner maybe not in the best 22.
