Roys Real Estate is back for another week people, so saddle up, strap on, oops, I mean strap in and enjoy the ride. Today we will be looking for any obscurities across the DT field whether it be a gun, dud or random person of no interest, with the aim to provoke discussion in order to help us through the dreaded TRADE DAY.

B….B….B….Bargain:

Scotty Thompson: Over the years Scotty T has been a huge favourite of mine, and for good reason…. he is a gun! He didn’t find himself in destROY this year, however if you are in the market for a premium who is set to turn their season around, look no further. The first half of the year Thommo has been hampered by a dodgy calf complaint but judging by the fact he played his most minutes since round 1 last weekend, I’d say he is back! Did I mentioned he pushed out a lazy 143 in that time? Priced at a bargain $378,400 with a low BE of just 66. Pfft, 66…. he eats pieces of sh*t like that for breakfast.

Luke Power: I warned people about this a couple of weeks ago and only wished I was shopping for a mid at the time. Since talking about Power priced around $330,000 he has pushed out 147 and 105. It seems Luke’s season is on the up and with a price of $388,400 and BE of only 38, its not too late to cash in.

Aaron Sandilands:This years premium ruckmen has slipped below is lofty standards the last 3 weeks, contributing his lowest scores of the season in consecutive weeks. There is talk that this trend will continue due to his high work rate wearing him down, but for non Sandi owners the price of $383,900 must be tempting. Although I regard him at a bargain for this price, he may be even cheaper next week due to having a BE of 115. That doesn’t help me much as I am 300 bucks short of a David Hille straight swap this week. Anybody got $300 they could lend me for the weekend, I’ll pay you back!

Fargain (opposite to bargain and sounds like a rude word) Idiots:

Health Shaw: Calvin summed it up best in his attempt to chop Heater in this weeks episode. How the hell I got tricked into picking him again this year I will never know. It was one of my rules not to do it and I did, grr arg! Well, this is how Heater has repaid the faith in the last month, 50, 84, 48 and 67. For a so called “attacking” premium defender that is a disgrace. Have a look at how Sam Gilbert plays for once! Heater, you don’t even provide an ounce of warmth. $298,700 with a BE of 108. He would be lucky to reach that in 2 games.

Daniel Wells:After years of waiting it looked like this could finally be it! Daniel Wells breakout year. Well guess what, Wellsy punk’ed you and he is back to his old tricks again. The deadly combination of niggling injuries with low scores has seen Wells drop back down to $335,400 and a BE of 147. Judging by his last two scores of 49 and 55, that could be an issue.

Daniel Giansiracusa:Well who would have thought that the return of 1 gun teammate could be the end of Gia’s season. Since the return of Boyd, not only has Gia lost his midfield time, he has now resorted to a forward tag role. Needless to say his scoring capacity is way down. To think I was quoted at 3 quarter time saying, I’d be happy for Gia to reach 50 makes me sick, sick in the stomach! Down to 348,100 with a BE of $149. Fingers crossed with Higgins out, he might get a run through the midfield or off a wing.

Absolutely Smashing it:

Beau Waters: It is not fair just to talk about Beau’s awesome last game, but he has been killing it for a month. I have said from the start to pick him up, and to keep him for the long haul. I tried to warn all you dudes that traded Waters out for a “premium” defender that it is pointless and he has proved me more than right!  3 hundreds in four games has seen his price jump to $349,600 and he is carrying a BE of just  -3. If that’s not premium baby, I don’t know what is! A well deserved winner of this weeks Boags Drought Golden Stubby.

Leigh Montagna:If you have enough coin and want an absolute jet, its hard to go past Monty. The last month he has averaged 132, man I barley have a player capable of scoring that in 1 week, let alone averaging it! Back to back scores of 151 and 146 would leave coaches very happy with his work. Priced at a premium $474,400, his BE of 57 indicates that he is still a bargain!

Michael Barlow: It is nothing we don’t already know but when you look at Barlow’s last month and think, holey hat, he is averaging more than Gazza…. its kind of a big deal. Out of Barlow’s last 3 games, 2 of them have had captain written all over them. Scores of 146 and 138 have seen his price skyrocket to $421,100 with a BE of 80. Facing DT hater Clinton Jones this week will be a true test to see where Barlow sits amongst the Gods. Barlow is another player I have heard some coaches whisper of trading to a “premium”. Haha, tell em’ their dreaming!

    Great read as always there Roy.

    This article matches my up and down team, had Sandilands, Shaw, Gia, Barlow and Waters from the start. Haven’t for one minute contemplated trading out Barlow or Waters and you can add Pods to that too, all keepers in my book. Even Rockliff if he can keep churning out centuries

    I love Scotty Thompson, this year has been a dog for him and has also been the first year that he hasn’t been in my side. Have a look at the upcoming fixture for Adelaide:

    12 – Hawthorn (8th)
    13 – Melbourne (13th)
    14 – Essendon (9th)
    15 – West Coast (14th)
    16 – Geelong (1st)
    17 – Port (11th)
    18 – Rich (16th)

    He is likely to absolutely smash it every game there except against Geelong. Could be an awesome unique pick to get you to the finals I think. However beware, tough run for the finals…

    On Gia, I’m not sure it’s a case of Boyd returning, I think it’s more of a case of Johnson and Murphy being out of that forward line. I do remember Gia getting one of his highest scores when Boyd was back into the side.

    Hopefully Murphy coming back into the side pushes Gia up the field a bit.

    Anyone think Ryder will have a quieter game with Hille out? Because of Hille’s injury I’ll be playing one short in the Ruck and my opponent has Ryder.

    Our teams score quite similar to each other so playing one short puts me at a significant disadvantage. I don’t really want to trade Hille as it isn’t really a superstar ruck this year in my view (I already have Sandi). I’m hoping if Ryder has a quiet game and I upgrade Ziebel or Rioli to a premium forward (Chappy?), things will come out roughly even.

      Ryder is the real deal! He has played along side Hille all season and is banging out hundreds! He is dominant around the grounds as well as up forward.

      He could well spear head our rucks for years to come!

    My season hit the shitter when I traded out Waters and Martin to upgrade to “premiums”. I did get Goddard for Waters, but I could’ve just as easily got him for Kennelly… Oh well, looking to cop a double doughnut this week, if Gysberts doesn’t play. How I ended up with Howlett starting in my midfield I’ll never know.

    Anyone know how long Ball will be out for?

    Alright here is one for ya all;

    Howlett -> Jizz

    Maguire -> Gilbert
    or
    bastinac -> thompson

    Im definitely leaning towards maguire to gilbert because i fear the inhury will ruin maguires season. I also get a 25 point better average not to mention my opponents will probably be covering maguire with webberely or davis.

    Also bastinac is really starting to come good. Two scors of 80 in a row. I LIKE THAT!

      Montagna for me. Since bringing him in two weeks ago he’s pumped out ridiculous scores and looks to be very dangerous around the goals… whereas Swanny doesn’t see too much forward line action. That said, I also have Swan too.

      But if I was going to choose it would have to be Montagna at this stage of the year and with his current form.

          That’s fair enough.. but there’s no doubt that Monty is more dangerous around the goals than Swan, in my opinion. I reckon he has bigger scoring ability.. but either way, both are stars and neither is going to be a bad choice.

    Prob won’t do the ball one as he’s been avaeraging close to 100 over the last 2 months and he’s a keeper now, im just a little bit obsessed with getting ablett.

      I would go balla to Didak personally if u dont already have him. Collingwoods draw from here on in gets very easy and he will start to kick A LOT of goals. If u have him then Pav.

      I agree not having ablett hurts and i had to do a huge re-jig to get him but ball is playing some awesome footy and to me its just not worth the trade.

      For anyone thinking about trades like this, think about this:

      Ball is out this week at least, so you’re weighing up the following:

      I’ll use totals rather than averages

      NicNat (737) to Sandi (1100) = Gain 363
      (That’s 67×11 and 100×11)
      Balla (758) to Pav (1088) = Gain 330

      Ball (931) to Ablett (1385) = Gain 454
      (93.1 x 10 and 125.9×11)

      Obviously any of the 6 could be out down the track and it’s up to you to work out the likelihood of that, but it is GUARANTEED that Ball’s out this week.

        You have it the wrong way round, Ball has played 11 games and Ablett only 10.
        Ball is 1025 total (11 x 93.1) Ablett is 1259 (10 x 125.9) so the gain is 234 not 454.
        Clearly Gaz’s av is way better, but if u r thinking about totals to take account of Bomber resting players then the others r tempting

          No, I’m talking about games from here to the end of the year. Ball’s not playing this week, so can only possibly play rds 13-22 = 10 games. I didn’t quite make that clear

          Obviously it’s pretty rough to use season averages when Ball’s 1st month was relatively poor, but this is a guide.

            I like where you’re going with that but you also have to factor in that I have sufficient bench cover for Ball being injured (Trengove & Gysberts). As for the other players Pavlich and Sandi will be replacing players on my field.

            Not sure, Id rather be stuck will Ball on the bench for a couple weeks then go into finals with Nic Nat and Balla on my field.

            My midfiled will still be Swan, Monty, Bartel, Stanton, Barlow and Ball for finals.

            @Coasters I’d be scared of getting to finals (assuming u care more about league than the car) with Nic Nat on the park, he is still young and is limping towards the split round and is likely to be getting tired again around finals time

    Gonna try one more trade to avoid the big black hole.

    Finger has been hovering over Kelly for my 7th defender (2k short of Gilbert)

    Only other options are Gilbee, Fisher, Milburn or Lovett-Murray; anyone convincing enough to drag me away from Kelly.

      Only question I would have about Geelong players is if they might be rested nearing the end of the year. One good thing about Kelly would be that with players being rested he might get more of a midfield role. So I would say get him in. I would warn you of Gilbee as I have him and his consistancy is annoying but can score the huge scores some weeks and then crap all the next.

    I feel oh so clever. With the money made from Howlett -> Jizz I then upgraded Ball -> Chappy and then DPP him with Ziebell. Then next round I will have enough cash left over to trade Hall to Pav and boom all set in FWDs. Then with 7 trades remaining I just have to think of what to do with Ziebell in mids with a bench of Bastinac and Jizz.

    Love it when a plan comes together, as I was always going to use Ball as a stepping stone.

    At the very worst I will have 5 trades left for LTI’s.

      Are you not better using the cash to upgrade Ziebell? Personally I have seen Ball as a keeper, especially considering his recent form.

        Yeah good point, certainly his BE is low and if he keeps playing well then I’d be stupid to trade. If in the event Hall starts playing really well I’d definitely look to my midfield first. I just figure there are more bargain in the fwd line atm. As I’d want a big premium to finalise my midfield… Maybe Boyd?

          Ball is injured though… I’d say do what you had initially planned.. then think of trading Bastinac down to maybe McNeill (77k for DPP – so you still have DPP after Ziebell is gone) and upgrade Ziebell to the likes of Boyd or Judd.

          So that you can leave Gysberts emergency in the mids to cover for late-withdrawals.. but if a premium goes down injured you can use the DPP that McNeil is brought in for and put Chappy/Pav in the mids and one of your forward bench players (hopefully Rockliff or Gumby) on the field until the premium comes back into the side.

          So in the case of a mid-premium injury: at worst.. you will have gained extra cash from going to a bottom-priced McNeil, have Gysberts either on the field or a DPP forward premium in his place, or your first bench player from the forward line on the field for a few weeks during the injury, thus saving vital trades.

          Hope this helps :)

    I am thinking of doing a unique trade and downgrading Howlett to Gysberts!

    Then it gets tough. This will leave me with 8 trades and a potential donut with Hille out. I am thinking something a little radical.

    Warnock – Skipper

    There are 3 reasons for this, the first and most obvious is that I save myself a donut and get a bonus 20-40 points from Skipper, the 2nd thing is it gives me a more reliable ruck backup (albeit crap!) for the remainder of the season (can’t see Warnock getting many more games) and finally and most importantly it helps to give me enough cash ($273,500) to be able to upgrade Armstrong to Ablett in the next week or 2.

    Bringing Ablett in will finalise my team with 6 trades left for tweaking/injuries come finals. My other options to downgrade are Nason and Ballantyne but there just aren’t any options available with good job security.

    What are your thoughts? Am I seeing the full picture? What am I missing?

      Question is are you going for points or just want to win your league. If you want to win your league look at the next couple of matches and then decide whether u need the 30-40 points you will get from Skipper. I dont think this is the best trade as it is a waste on such a useless player. I was also thinking of trading warnock for cash and you can get an extra 50k for a rookie which could be useful in the future, but at the cost of 30 points for a couple of weeks.

      Silvagni I think. Myers might be used in defence by the Bombers again. He point scoring ability will be higher when he and if he gets a regular mid field gig.

        In saying that, is it worth trading howlett to mcneil for dpp, then goose to goddard. Just leaves 4 trades for year. Side set though

          Goddard is a gun and would be handy. I am not the biggest fan of the DPP with mcneil but if you think it would better suit your team then it may be good to do so. It depends on your forward bench as well if you decide to get him.

        Im going Hille to Cox, the main reason is its a straight swap, Cox doesnt have the big 130s in him any more (thanks alot NicNat) but he will still pump out an 80 at worst.

        At the start of the season i said that i would be happy with a 160 average from my rucks, 100 from Sandi and 60 from Hille. and i would still be happy with 160 average now, getting 80 from Sandi 80 from Cox, cant complain with that!!

    Hey guys,
    Has anyone wondering Gysberts capability to hold his spot in the best 22. Danny hughes did ok and got dropped. Mckenzie did ok and was fighting for a spot. Bail did ok and was struggling.

    With a few outs for melbourne and you’d think they’d walk stright back in.. I cant see trengove and scully moving out.. Does that mean dear gysberts is gonna get pushed out.. I’d need the kid to play at least 3 games to be worth him trading in..
    Im not saying he wont playt his week, but the next few…. who knows.
    Any opinions on whether this guy is good real estate this week AND the following few weeks.
    And any melb insiders know anything on hughes?

      Danny Hughes is a feel good story who played a few games after years of injuries!

      Jizzbert on the other hand is a first round draft pick who has a big future!

      Considering that i believe Jizzbert has farrr greater job security(Warnie) lol

      I think Gysberts is in the same bracket as Scully and Trengove as a high first round draft pick so their job security would be simular. Dean Bailey did say he wanted to play those high picks this season so I think he is fairly safe until the end of the season (barring injury or the dreaded GENERAL SORENESS.)

      Probably never, the only reason he’s a downgrade target is because he can be used for DPP.. so that if a premium mid gets injured you can swap Chappy/ROK/Pav/Didak into the mids and McNeil down to the forward bench. Then just play Rockliff or Gumby or whoever else you have on your forward bench.

    plenty of cash made there for me as Hunt would only be bench cover and geelong have plenty of injuries
    didnt look half bad in a game where geelong were tested for 80% of the game
    I really need the cash to get chappy in for Balla especially with Balla gonna score -10 against the saints
    I need hunt aswell to be emergency incase webberley gets dropped from extended bench

    opinions please, i’m still alive in eliminator, but unsure if i’ll make it any further

    my team: duffield, enright, carrazzo, hodge, goddard, sheppard, waters (webberly, maguire)
    abblet, swan, montagna, barlow, gibbs, boyd (stevenson, shuey)
    sandi, ryder
    o’keefe, gia, buddy, j-pod, didak, brennan, gumby (higgins, relton)

    opponents: enright, carrazzo, hodge, goddard, webberly, malceski, waters (schmidt, davis)
    abblet, swan, montagna, barlow, gibbs, bartel (JKT, shuey)
    sandi, ryder
    o’keefe, j-pod, buddy, chappy, rockliff, JB, higgins (playfair, relton)

    teams are very similar, unless he makes a trade he will have a donut in forwards, so assuming he’ll trade higgins. i think he would play safe and make abblet captain, and this is where i think i can edge him. i’m gonna put boyd captain. he always tears it up at the dome, and brisbane play 1 on 1 which will suit him. i think abblet will play a fair bit up forward which may give him a low hundred score.
    thoughts?

      Do you have many trades left? Or any cash in the bank? If so maybe upgrade maguire to a better defender and have sheppard on the bench. The Boyd thing could be a clever idea, the only problem of which is if Ablett rips it up and Boyd doesnt then you cant negate the captain Ablett.

      i reckon it’s a great idea…

      If you think your team is better – take Ablett (and negate captain affect)

      If you think he/she has got you covered – take the risk and go Boyd.

      For what it’s worth i agree with your ‘Boyd at the dome’ sentiments, and i’m making him captain this week. I don’t have Ablett, but have given him the C over Swan and Ablett.

      On another note, very jealous of that midfield.

    Rucks – Hille / Sandilands — Bench = Warnock / Lobbee
    so copping a 0 unless I trade.

    Shuey to Jizzberts worth doing???

    I have 8 trades left.
    282k (with ablett next week most will go)

    Team is.

    Backs – Gilbert / Hodge / Goddard / Carrots / Hunt / Waters- Bench Silvani and Webberly
    so potentially could downgrade Silvano / Webberly or Hunt cause I want to upgrade one to Scotland later on or a similar player.

    Mids – Hayes / Bartel / Barlow / JSewlood / Martin (ablett next week) / Pendelbry ———– bench is Shuey and Armstrong will need to keep one on the bench.

    Rucks – Hille and Sandi with Warnock and Lobbe on the bench

    Forwards – Gia/ Brown /Betts /Rok /Pav/ Goodes / Pods — bench this week is Brennan and Phil Davis.

    So I also have the ability to do a downgrade up forward for sure out of Gia/Brennan and Betts.

    Thoughts would be great.

    I am not sure about bringing in Gysberts with Armstrong playing on the bench. You might not need the midfield emergency. With Hille do you need the points in the next few weeks. If so maybe consider Cox as it wouldnt use up much of your cash and he would probably score around the same as Hille for the rest of the season anyway. I wouldnt want to waste too many trades at this stage of the season going into finals though.

        Down back I dont like Hunt on field, but I think he would be handy on the bench. Depending on how many trades you want to take into finals I would say possibly get rid of both Sivlangi and Weberly and bring in someone better down back. You will still have some cash in the bank from the Martin to Ablett trade and could bring in someone like Waite who would score better than Hunt. You could do this in a couple of weeks when Weberly’s price has risen more and possibly pick up someone like Enright. I would leave your forward line until finals as to at least keep some trades for injuries and then possibly upgrade Betts to someone more consistant.

      You could keep all those backs, and bring goddard into your mids instead if you are looking to upgrade there, that way u have flexibility of substituting goddard into your backs for either hodge or carrazzo as extra injury cover
