Why should I pick him?
Jase Burgoyne is a player that I have heard chatter about over the latter half of last season and the during this off season when it comes to a player that people think could be a breakout contender and when we have a look at his numbers I can certainly see why he has been drawing some attention which is why I wanted to discuss him in today’s Deck of DT article.
Burgoyne has really cemented his spot in the Power’s best 22 during 2024 and there is no real reason to believe that will change in 2025. Over the last 7 rounds of last season we saw Burgoyne average 89.2 which was up from the 69.8 average we saw from his first 13 games. He started to look a lot more comfortable with his spot in the team and after coming into the side in round 2, and he was the starting sub in both rounds 3 and 4 clocking just 30% and 43% time on ground respectively and since then he was not subbed in or out of a game for the remainder of the year. He only missed two games being rounds 9 and 16 with a hamstring being the issue in round 16 and groin tightness in round 9. On each occasion he missed just the one week meaning that he shouldn’t be an injury concern.
When we look at his scoring, he also performed in the finals series with 104 against the Hawks and then 84 against the Swans. So overall we are expecting that Jase should be a player on the rise and ready for a breakout season. There is a hole in that backline for Port with the departure of Houston to Collingwood and the style of play that we saw from Houston with the run and carry is what we have seen from Burgoyne if he is given the chance.
His four scores of 100 or more show us that he can score from anywhere on the field. He had 112 v St Kilda, 100 v Hawthorn (rd 10) and 107 v Richmond with most time spent in those games as a forward midfielder but his 104 v Hawthorn in the semi final saw him playing predominantly as a defensive midfielder. This is showing us that as a wingman he can rack up the points wherever he is on the field and that playing that role isn’t the wasteland of fantasy scoring.
Why shouldn’t I pick him?
Now after showing you that he can score wherever he is on the field and that his average was climbing through out the season and during the finals there are some key things we need to take into account.
The role that has been vacated by Houston is more than likely to be filled by Farrell (who missed the finals through injury) as he plays a more similar game to Houston than Burgoyne does. We also saw that once Houston was suspended that Burton came back into the side and instantly went from being a 40-70 player to scoring 80, 96 and 81 in the three games he played at the back end (he missed the game against Hawthorn injured) of the season with Houston out. He, along with Farrell who was also out whilst Houston was out at the end of the season, are the more likely beneficiaries of those points given the more mature bodies and experience with Burgoyne more likely to be the linking runner on a wing who may or may not get used each time the ball exits the defensive 50.
He is also not the only youngster that Kenny has at his disposal off that half back/wing area. Burgoyne will be competing for points with Josh Sinn and also Logan Evans, both of whom featured late in the season.
When you step back and have a look at the data he is heading into just his fourth season and 2024 was his first season of playing more than 7 games. To me this makes him quite risky to be selecting him in your starting squad. His averages have been 60.3 (from 7), 35.8 (from 5) and then 76.5 (from 23 incl finals).
Then we need to look at his price. At $785k you can certainly argue that he is fully priced or very close to it and he isn’t going to be someone you are desperate to have in your final team at the end of the season. For less money you can pick up Will Day and for even less you can get Jack Macrae, both of whom I believe offer far more value.
Deck of DT Rating.
JACK
Despite the breakout possibilities that have been talked about with Jase, he is not someone that we should be considering for your starting Classic squad. The growth in his scoring is just not there and he won’t provide you with the value that you need to get from him as an expensive ‘mid pricer’ to start the season.
He is very much a draft option for you though, he doesn’t have a high ceiling but he is a fairly consistent scorer with his non-vested games in 2024 yielding just 4 games below 60. He should be a target in the mid rounds of your draft as he will consistently get a game and will score.
I know you are usually looking at these Deck of DT articles to tell you who to pick, but on this occasion I thought it necessary to just put a ‘realistic’ lens over Jase Burgoyne to tell you why he isn’t someone that you need to start with.
Thanks for write up, I like these more left field or PODs for articles as less is generally known or written about them.
Cheers Euman,
Thanks mate, I wanted to just put this out there as I think Burgoyne will be a name people will have a look at but wanted to put all my thoughts on the table.
Could be a great draft option. Cheers Dunny
Hi PK,
Absolutely, he is very much more of a draft person this year than he is classic. He will be a very reliable guy I think, just not a huge ceiling that we have seen yet.
Josh sinn will get Houston’s role
Hi Brendon, I’m just not quite as sold but I think Sinn will have a big role to play. It is certainly the role that they have drafted him for. I think he could be in and out of that role during the year with a view that he will be the man in 2026. But I would be happy if he develops that quickly.
