Join me and special guest James (@ShuckasFantasy) in the next head to head battle between premium midfielders Andrew Brayshaw and Rory Laird. We discuss each player in depth and talk about their pros and cons, give our verdict on who we would pick out of the two players, and if we are keen on starting either player in our side.
Andrew Brayshaw
A nagging knee injury meant Brayshaw had a slower start than normal to 2023, going under 100 on three occasions, a top score of just 120, and an average of only 100.5 during the first six weeks of the season. From this point on though, he went big, averaging 113.7 from Round 7 and only went under 100 on two occasions. This already presents four points of upside, but if Serong regresses a little bit like he did when Young played in the midfield, we could be looking at a 115+ average from Brayshaw in 2024!
Rory Laird
Everyone knows I’m keen to start Laird once again in 2024, but here’s why. Every score last year under 100 that he had all have reasons behind it. Round 1 57 (hot weather and sick), Round 3 and 4 83 and 84 (tagged by Drew and Aish, don’t see those tags going to him), Round 12 81 (Swallow tag don’t see Gold Coast tagging), and Round 16 85 (managed in game against North). That along with a 101 vs St Kilda in Round 9 where he was subbed off in early in the 4th quarter (could have been a 130) and an injury vs GWS where he missed a week. I expect the Crows to roll with Laird, Dawson and Crouch as the main midfield, and Dawson to attract the opposition attention, could mean Laird goes back to a 115+ average in 2024!
