Join me and special guest DC from HatChat in the next head to head battle between forward premiums Jack Macrae and Sam Flanders. We discuss each player in depth and talk about their pros and cons, give our verdict on who we would pick out of the two players, and if we are keen on starting either player in our side.
Jack Macrae
It was another down year in 2023 for Jack Macrae, and he has fallen in average by a significant margin over the two seasons, averaging 116.1 in 2021, down to 104.2 in 2022, then further down to 91.8 last season. That was his worst average since his rookie season in 2013. With Bailey Smith out for the season, the hope is Macrae has a bump back over 50% CBAs and in a forward line with very few options, Macrae is one of the safest options to average 90+ and be a top 6 forward.
Sam Flanders
After not being given much opportunity for the first half of the season with Stuart Dew still coach, Sam Flanders finally was given the opportunity post bye and showed us what we thought he was capable of. From his final 10 games, he averaged 105 which included scores of 120, 110, 125 and 146. He also only had one score below 90. With potentially 15+ points of upside if he replicates that for a season, looks like a great pick. The one big issue is he has a bye in Round 3, which makes for very interesting discussion about him this preseason.
