21 down, 2 to go!
We’ve reached preliminary final weekend, which means there are only 18 games left in the AFL Fantasy season! While coaches will be focusing on trading in POD’s and examining their finals matchups, I’m getting the ball rolling for award season by looking at some of the best cash cow contributors from season 2022 so far.
Rookie/cash cows picks are players who start the season at $300,000 or lower
Power Ranking Cash Cows – Round 21
After 20 weeks of action, these are the top-10 cash cow performers!
Cash Cow King – Round 21
For a change, Nick Daicos (108) put together another strong performance in the first match of the round, however, the Rising Star favourite wasn’t the top rookie scorer of the weekend. Elijah Hollands (118) put together the best game of his young career to lead the pack, with Josh Ward (84) and Brynn Teakle (86) not too far behind him. Gold Coast’s touted youngster gets my tick of approval this week.
Round 22 Rookie Rankings
With the exception of Nick Daicos, coaches would’ve made it a priority to remove all the rookies from their field, however, forced trades may have complicated those plans. Fingers crossed you are reading this without a cash cow still in your starting 22, but if you do have to field a young gun, here are the ones I have the most trust in to close the season.
Nick Daicos (Magpies)
Jase Burgoyne (Power)
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (Saints)*
Nick Daicos (Magpies)
Josh Ward (Hawks)
Jake Soligo (Crows)
Brynn Teakle (Power)
Nic Martin (Bombers)
Josh Carmichael (Magpies)
Tyson Stengle (Cats)
* if named
Round 22 Downgrade Targets
Cash is key at this point of the season and while there’s nothing wrong with throwing a bench position away for a $190K player, there are still some rookies who offer plenty of value over the final fortnight.
Brynn Teakle ($235K, RUC/FWD, Power)
Kallan Dawson ($248K, DEF, Kangaroos)
Wade Derksen ($190K, DEF/FWD, Giants)*
Jai Serong ($198K, MID/FWD, Hawks)
James Tsitas ($190K, MID, Suns)*
* if named
Successful coaches this season wouldn’t have been able to reach great heights without the assistance of reliable cash cows. Below you can have your say on which players should be in the mix for the positional MVP award after their efforts in 2022, and next week I will be back with the final voting ballot for all the rookie/cash cow awards including Game of the Year, the Cash Cow King and more!
Make 2-4 selections (depending on position) for the finalists of each award race.
Voting closes at the conclusion of Round 22

Hey Fry, surely by this stage of the season you know Stengle plays for the Cats.
But tigers are felines
Swapped out Noah Cumberland and forgot to change the team! At least I had a similar animal
Hey Fry, which trade option is best for Cripps and Carmichael:
1. Hall/Cerra/Prestia/Whitfield and Lukosius/Mitch McGovern
2. Zorko/De Goey/Stephenson and Menegola/Bailey/Green/Setterfield
3. Walsh/Parker/Baz and Hollands/rookie(fielded)
which is best and who to get?
Interesting choices, I’m hesitant to suggest Hollands on field but after his recent score you might be able to get away with it. Non of the second names in the top-2 excite me, so I’d roll the dice on Hollands and go for Walsh with Kennedy/Hewett/Cripps missing
Taranto to luke parker and cripps to oliver or steele ??
Or brayshaw ??
Taranto & Brayshaw
Like the Parker in and I’d nab Oliver with the second move mate
Who goes first out of Preuss, ROB, H.Young, Daicos, Crisp, Macrae, Neale, Brodie or Heeney
Preuss goes if you ask me
Which option is the best?
Gawn, English, Bont, Bailey Smith or D.Moore
I think I’d back in Max Gawn
Why is tft rank server down?
No clue mate, try a different browser
not sure who to trade out here thoughts?
taranto, crisp or treloar? if i did trade one, whom for; oliver, parker or someone else? like bont or baz
Taranto not playing so trade him out. I’d go for Parker here mate
Taranto to Oliver if you can get him – otherwise grab Parker
Thanks for your articles and advice this year Fry. I’m playing an only slightly stronger team this week, which I guess means it could go either way.
Do I just match opponent with Laird v Nth?! Or one of these 2 options, bringing in both players, 1) Walsh & Steele (trading Neale, both PODs atm) or 2) Hall (POD) & Merrett (to match opponent, and keeping Neale).
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
I think if you can get Rory Laird, you get him. If it was me I’d captain him and cancel out that matchup
Zorko or Stephenson?
Zorko for me
Cripps to steele. Oliver or brayshaw ??
Cripps to Oliver
Why are you so hot on oliver over steele and brayshaw ?
Taranto to Oliver or Merrett?
Which combo is best?
Stephenson and Oliver/Steele or Zorko and Gawn/B.Smith
Zorko and Gawn is hard to pass up!
Love your work Fry.
Unfortunately just shy of getting both Hall and Marshall this week which was Plan A.
Is Marshall a must have this week?
Daicos > Hall
Darcy > Baz Smith
That’s a bummer, as a non-Marshall owner myself I feel your pain. Hall and Baz Smith are pretty good ins though, I’d grab them
Thanks for all your advice and insights this season Fry, definitely the most useful article of the week.
Pushing to try and climb a couple of hundred spots to crack the top 500, what do you think of these options:
Brodie to Marshall
Or Guthrie/Macrae to A.Brayshaw? Or Oliver I guess as you seem to like his final 2 over AB.
Cheers mate, I appreciate the kind words!
Hmmmm tough one, I think Brodie to Marshall is a nice upgrade, although the idea of nabbing Clayton (you’re right, I prefer his last two over AB) for Guthrie is tempting. See how teams unfold, but I think I’d do the second move and grab Oliver
1) Hall and Bailey Smith
2) Zorko and Marshall
3) Hall and Bont
4) Houston and Marshall
No. 1 for me
Change of plans with Duncan an out. Which option do you like?
1) Daicos > Hall & Duncan > Marshall
2) Daicos > Hall & Duncan > Baz Smith
I think I’d do No. 1 mate
Sean Darcy lives again!! Is Marshall, Bont or Bazlenka the best option to bring in. Leaning towards Marshall
I feel you, I can’t get rid of the bloke either! Out of those options I’d be inclined to pick Marshall
If I have to field one of these rookies which one; O.Lord, W.Kelly or J.Serong (if he is named)?
To be honest, I don’t love any of them but I’d rank them in reverse order you listed them
Hey Fry & anyone else :)
From this team who would you look at offloading & bringing in to improve it the most for this round?
Docherty, Sinclair, Helmet Brayshaw, Lloyd, Crisp, Sicily
Merrett, Steele, Mills, Brayshaw, Cripps, Neale, Petracca, Macrae
Parker, Bont, Smith, Brodie, English, Heeney
There’s not a lot of ways to improve that team, it looks pretty good on paper! I’d probably have Crisp, Macrae and English in the firing line though for maybe a Zorko/Oliver combo or maybe chase Gawn, Touk or a unique like Brad Crouch
Thoughts on Crisp to Zorko? Bank coin and Crisp match up not great
Was thinking that Sam! Who would you trade in with the second one using that coin I would have about 200K?
Is Tim English next in line to go now he has to share ruck duties & has always scored poorly the last few times with shared ruck?
