Why should I pick him?
This is Tom Doedee. Pronounced Tom-Do-Day.
So who is this young 22-year old?
Back in 2017, off the back of the departure of Jake Lever to Melbourne, the door opened for Doedee who had a brilliant break-out debut season in 2018. That year he averaged 72.5.
This even included a game where he was concussed and didn’t play out the game on 27. And…we do what I enjoy doing and removing that game from his record and re-calculate his average, he would have gone at a very healthy 75.
That season he scored over 100 on two occasions and was actually rather consistent. But then in 2019, he did his ACL.
Doedee tore his ACL in the second quarter (on 38pts) in round one and sat out the season.
This entitles him to a 27% discount on his 72.5 average which places him right in the calculations as a worthy selection this year… priced at an average of only 54.
At his very BEST let’s say he could average 80.
At his WORST, he could average 65.
Either way, he is way unders but it comes down to his knee.
Our Fantasy Guru reporter Lee Gaskin got these words from Tom in mid-January.
“The knee’s feeling good, just need to keep progressing into match simulation and into three weeks of training and then look at the Marsh Community Series from there,” Doedee said.
“I’m doing everything except for the full intensity stuff, then I go to the side and do the same intensity and contact, just in a more controlled environment with the physios, so I’m just about there.”
Now, I’m not a doctor… but that’s sounding pretty good to me.
The other MASSIVE tick for Doedee is his recent elevation into the Crow’s leadership group. This firstly shows where he sits within the team and his importance to the Crows under their new coach, Matthew Nicks in 2020.
Why shouldn’t I pick him?
The concerns are his fitness and his ability to play games early.
Basically, at his price of $403,000 what will you do when he misses round two after pulling up sore from round one? Downgrade him to a rookie? Or find the $300k you’ll need to move him to a premium defender?
Although this is ‘predicting’ the future and no one can do that. This is a possibility.
Players coming back from ACL injuries can take some time and can be rather inconsistent finding his feet.
The other thing to consider is… you’ll have Dylan Roberton back there, but do you want players like Doedee and even Birchall as well, you’ll have your heart in your mouth every Thursday night when teams drop just holding hope that they play week in and week out.
Or… the other thing t consider is… will he be much better than a rookie?
Lachlan Ash or Hayden Young could average 60, and at a price tag much less than Doedee. In fact, you’d save about $140,000. Is that saving worth the few extra points that Doedee can offer?
Lot’s of questions and not many answers until we see how he’s moving over the next few weeks.
Deck of DT Rating – JACK
This could go either way, and honestly I’m torn.
The value he offers is obvious, he’s 15-20pts under what he will achieve. You’ll need to monitor his fitness over the Marsh Series and intra-club matches to see exactly where he is that. Along with monitoring the defender rookies and weigh up, is the extra $140k, worth the investment.
