Drawing Board 2019

Chad has an early version of his popular team builder site ready for next season.

While we are waiting for AFL Fantasy Classic to open in January, our friend Chad at www.dtlive.com.au has got the 2019 version of his popular team picker, the Drawing Board, opened for coaches to start building their teams.

Chad has crunched the numbers and got a version up that takes in A quick recap on how prices are calculated.

  • $12,800,000 salary cap is projected.
  • Players are priced based on their output last season. eg. 2018 average x magic number (approx 7142 for 2019).
  • Players who missed a full season receive a discount of 30% on their 2017 average.
  • Players who have missed two or more seasons received a discount of 35% on their last available average.
  • Players playing less than 10 games receive a 3% discount on each game under 10. eg. Play 5 games in 2016, then they receive a 15% discount. This is applied to the higher of their season average from the last two years.

Head to www.dtlive.com.au and under AFL, click on Drawing Board to start picking your squad of 30 players now. You will need a free account to get started. The easy to use and mobile friendly site has plenty of information including what average a player is priced at, their bye round, early opponents and an ownership percentage for registered teams on DT Live. Also, don’t forget to put in your projected average for your own user as well as compiling a site-wide projected average.

Copy and paste your team into the comments below simply from DT Live.

Fort as R2 may sound silly but I think he will play and average 70+. I feel if I can punt on him being there until rd3 I can bring in my Mumford or a Premo ruck and all is well.
    T. Kelly I am not sure about. I will leave that spot open until closer to Rd1 but advice would be welcome.
    J. Kelly was a lucky dip between him and a few price around him. Again, that spot is up for grabs.
    Any advice would be appreciated

Def: looks very solid, love the Sicily pick new kick in rule should see him go 100+ great pod especially if Whitfield fails early
Mids: nice structure, Ross is so criminal underated for what he can produce, I’m also tossing up whether to bring him in over a Kelly or Crouch. Lastly not having Macrae could hurt early especially given his early draw.
Rucks: Fort at R2 is too risky and I doubt that he will play round
Fwds: Not fully sold that Kelly will improve enough to be worth it probs a wait and see for jlt, also like the 4 pemos up fwd due to the lack of trustworthy rookies.

Thanks for the feedback. I may still bring in Macrae but I am still not as comfortable with him as the rest of people are.
As I said Fort may not play round 1 but I think he probably will and needs to last two rounds to break even (for the selection), if he lasts longer than that and it is a win.
Yeah I am not sold on Kelly – not tons of value that you can trust around that price point unless key forwards do increase their output. Could say a Hawkins or McDonald push closer to the ton? I doubt it but we don’t know.
        Thanks again for the feedback.

I think Fort will definitely be in the mix for Round 1. It seems odd that they would draft a 26 year old if they had no intention of playing him. Also, I think Stanley and Smith have had issues during the pre-season, just minor ones so far, but it might mean they’re not 100%, Stanley isn’t even back in full training yet.

As for the rest of the team, I like it. You haven’t gone overboard with the mid-pricers, but you’ve picked a couple that could do well. I like Sicily as a POD.

I think Fort should be no. 1 ruck and Ratugolea will pinch hit. They may choose to go big and have Stanley Fort and Ratugolea but I doubt it. Thanks for the feedback

Yeah I put up with it last year and I think I am going to go even stronger in the backline which helps minimise the effect. The kick in rule is too tempting and I think I might double down on the rule.

All depends on if Clarke and Fort play round 1.

Big fan of this team. Almost identical to mine (if Clarke plays). Be prepared for a back up option if he doesn’t though. I suppose Naismith is a shout though he doesn’t present too much value, otherwise you’ll need a complete restructure. Personally I would shift Dunkley to Winguard or Kelly and Whitfield to Laird as I feel like Whitfield might cop a bit of the tag again this year

Havent played RDT before, but as I understand its a limited trade format.
Kolo, Hanley and Lynch are all injury prone, could be risky with 3 in one team.
The rest of the team is solid, few POD’s ni there with Ross, Neale and McLean noice

I really like it. Interesting to see a team without Walsh, but it could pay off for you. Good to see you’ve left some money to make changes to rookies, I like that. Nankervis is an excellent R2 option. I think the new rules in 2019 are going to benefit the faster, more mobile ruckman. If they can push up the ground from a ruck contest, and into the forward line, and they can beat their opponent, then one team will have more players inside 50, so I think it will be crucial. Forwards and backs are fine, don’t see anything wrong with them. Mids are a bit iffy, you’d be banking a lot on Sidebottom and Redden smashing it, and on Brayshaw backing up his score from last year. If they don’t you’ll be behind. I think there are other, better picks. Also you don’t really have a standout captain option. Possibly Grundy, I guess.

Anyway, very strong looking team, especially for this point in the pre-season.

Like a lot of your picks, but personally think you have gone a little too heavy on the stars and scrubs style. Having all of Collins, Goddard, Stocker, Bewley, Constable, Setterfield, Cavarra and Burgess in your starting lineup is, well it’s a lot of first gamers. Leaves no room for your stars to have a bad week. It will make you cash for sure, and allows you to trade your stars down in the first few weeks for the big performing rooks, but this strat is more geared toward having a big finish to the season with the extra cash you make, but at the cost of the start of your season.. Just my opinion. Good luck mate.

Starting without Grundy is very brave indeed, and not something I’d be prepared to do, but who knows, maybe it will work for you. Other than that, it’s not too bad. I’d say your midfield is a little too weak. I think M. Crouch will be good, but I’m not brave enough to have him at M1. You’re batting deep in defence, which I like.

      Overall, not too bad.

Backline is strong, but I don’t like the Birchall pick. I think now with Titch down, you need to look at the mids and rucks as a couple. So you either need to have Macrae or Grundy (i.e. someone that can average 120 and be captain), which you do. I like the Fyfe and Neale selections although I don’t think Fyfe will average 110, but I’d like to see it. Worpel or Birchall would be the first players I’d look at to downgrade to upgrade Clarke if he doesn’t play.

From a RDT point of view what value is there for a mid pricer this season to actually be worth starting with?
I know Newman and Williams are options in the defence who we are predicting to avg 10+, but we have options like Sicily, Witherden and Lloyd also who potentially could see 10+ on their averages. so that completely rules out a defender mid pricer. Brad Crouch is another a lot of people are targetting but his upside that good for a stepping stone for RDT format?
    Preuss, Kreuzer?
    Greene?
    Where does everyone stand?

    • Avatar

      Jake

      January 18, 2019 at 12:35 pm

I only play RDT, so I’ll take a whack at answering this.

Call me conservative, but personally I generally prefer to only go for mid-pricers that I think will become keepers. Injury is also a big factor. At the moment the only three mid-pricers in my team are Tom Lynch (Tigers), Billy Longer and Rory Sloane. I think Lynch and Sloane can both become premos in their respective positions, and Longer is so cheap I think you have to start with him. I’m not going anywhere near Brad Crouch or Zac Williams, partly because of their injury history (neither one has ever played a full season), but partly because I don’t think it’s enough upside. I think Crouch will average 101-102, which isn’t enough to be a premo. I think Williams will go high-80’s and miss a few games. I don’t mind Kreuzer as a mid price option. He could get back to his best and be very good, but I think there are far better options than Preuss. Longer and Clarke are obviously cheaper than him, Mumford is only about $30K more, and English is only about $100K more, and I think all of them will be about the same or better than Preuss. At this point most of my mid-pricers are fallen premos, (Sloane, Lynch, etc.). If Toby Greene plays in the JLT I might put him in, but as I understand it, he’s not even back running yet and the club aren’t rushing him back.

It’s a pretty broad watchlist at this point, but some other players I have my eye on include:

      Roberton
      Redden
      Hanley
      Birchall
      K.Kolodjashnij
      Nankervis
      Christensen
      Worpel

and many others. Basically, unless they are super cheap, it comes down to whether I think they can be a premo, and their injury history. I don’t think the new rules will see guys like Lloyd increase their averages by 10+ points, that’s a bit of wishful thinking. I think we might see a small bump, but nothing too significant.

I love Timmy in your midfield, absolute jet, rucks are sound, lovely POD, I don’t think Scrimshaw or Harley will get games early on but they are higher priced rookies so you have room,

Love the H.Shaw pic. Sound in all departments. Low in ownership. With all the new rules changes, teams defensive structures and kick in structures may change. This could mean role changes for past Fantasy Premos.Currently in my team, could be a safe starting options to see how it all plays out the first 3 weeks.

Bit of a weird one but what do people think about Quinton Narkle? Had a very good debut game last season (about 90 off the top of my head), highly touted to be playing an inside mid role at the Cats. As a Cats fan, he did add flair to our midfield so I would not be too suprised. Priced in the low 40s (inflated Rookie), I could see him push his average to high 70s, maybe 80s. Lots of tempting mid-pricers I know, but I am interested to see what everyone thinks.

if he plays JLT cup in a full strength cats midfield and plays in the centre square, scoring 80+ he will be on everyones radar, but until then its a pass from me. 320k is too much if theres a chance you could get someone like setterfield 70k cheaper and could score simlar. The cats midfield is stacked as it is with gaz, selwood, danger, menegola, duncan, kelly, dahlhaus, cockatoo, parfitt all rotating through at different stages.

Looks good mate. Some would say pretty vanilla but i see no problems with that. I’m guessing you already have planned as much but JLT watch for role with Adams & Wingard & minutes for Brad Crouch & Hanners as well as rookies. Reasonably similar structure to what I’m looking at.

At this stage vanilla is fine, there are great players to choose for multiple reasons and a reason why a lot of people choose them. I don’t think it’s a great move to chase pods just to be different to others in this forum. The pods come with upgrades and choices through the season

Pretty good overall. I love Gresham as a POD. I think it’s a bit risky starting without Macrae. Crouch had another injury setback today, so that’s not a good sign, and I think Liberatore is really overrated. I’d get rid of Crouch and Libba for a Premo and a rookie, but otherwise, it looks really good.

I think we have got to the stage of avoiding Port Adelaide players for now, as if you look at their time on ground percentages they all are quite low for the midfielders most of last year, which cost a lot of points. on memory they were only averaging 75-80% time on ground, which is very low. That would be my main concern for picking any PA players.

I don’t want to sound like a dick but I am not really sure about this team. You have gone against the grain in the backline and chosen to go weak. I do like your top 3 but a D2 in between them would strengthen that line up.
Midfield is ok. I see the reasoning behind your picks and you should back them but I personally won’t in my team bar Zerrett…. and maybe Adams. Chosen against any mid pricers in this line which is ok and interesting.
Rucks ok. Grundy obvious but Nank is a weird one. He needs to push 100 unless you are thinking of offloading him to Mummy.
      Forward line good.
It might sound harsh but I think the structure is quite weak no lines really stand out

Hi Matt. My suggestion. Remove Goldsack D3 needs the ability to put points on the board. Goldsack is a good player but will stuggle start. The pies have a young jet rookie quaynor priced around 250K?.MIDFEILD really weak. Crouch still has issues with his feet and is a injury risk, remove and replace with rookie Bewley. It will free up cash for another premium mid. Your foward line must be a cats supporter. All good players but think of the buy rounds.Good Luck
