My Team 2017: Version 1.1

Post and discuss your team this pre-season. See the vanilla team of 2017 so far.

Chad, the man behind DT Live, has updated the Drawing Board for the 2017 season. Head over to the site and select ‘Drawing Board’ from the drop down menu and you can start picking your AFL Fantasy Classic squads for the upcoming season.

Click here to use the Drawing Board.

Once you have picked your team, you can simply copy and paste your team to put in the comments below. Now that we have My Team cranking, discuss any players, team structure, etc in the comments. As always, keep it civil and if you’re advice, make sure you dish out some of your own (make sure it well thought out and not blatant trolling – we’re totally over that after 10+ years of DT Talk!).

Get keen for a massive season ahead.

We have put together a team featuring the most selected players so far this pre-season. It has been created to fit the salary cap, with $32K remaining, but it does include most of the popular selections to fit the structure. There’s plenty here we would change, but all in all, the DT Live community seem to be on the money! After the O’Meara news today, his ownership is likely to drop.

    FANTASY 158k remaining

    DEF: T.Adams, S.Docherty, R.Laird, A.McGrath, G.Logue, J.Berry (M.Hibberd, A.Otten)

    MID: T.Rockliff, A.Treloar, T.Mitchell, N.Fyfe, D.Heppell, S.Selwood, S.Powell-Pepper, J.Barrett (N.Freeman, J.Graham)

    FWD: J.Macrae, I.Heeney, H.Mcluggage, R.Knight, J.Bowes, C.McCarthy (B.Eddy, J.Pickett)

I understand my FWD is very thin. Any ideas on how to improve my team? Please rate

      January 24, 2017 at 12:40 pm

      Nice team!
Maybe Treloar for Fiorini then Knight and McCarthy for Roughead and Bennell? Depends whether prioritize having PODs.

      • CrozaN.

        January 24, 2017 at 2:35 pm

Did you seriously just suggest he trade Treloar for Fiorini?……dafuq

        • Another Arctic Flying wombat Panda of Doom named Drowning fish

          January 24, 2017 at 2:52 pm

Fiorini should play on the wing at GCS,
I think buying both Gawn and Grundy limits your options on other lines, I suggest pick one and then grab a cheaper R2 like Sandi, Ryder, Nankervis, I’m starting Sandi,

Your mid is pretty similar to mine in terms of structure, I’ve gone Danger over treloar but that’s just personal opinion. It’s good, not much to say about it,
In the back, 3 guns, 3 rooks looks to be one of the popular structures that seems to be floating around. Not a fan of Taylor Adams, (see my explanation further below)
I agree your fwd Line is thin, But you have a little bit of cash left over so you could get a roughhead or Bennel in your squad.

I’ve played with my team a bit, obviously this will change in 2 months but thoughts on it right now. I have quite heavy in the midfield

    32k in the bank

DEF: Adams, Hodge, Hartlett, Hibbo, Thurlow, McGrath (Hibbo, Ryan)
MID: Titch, Sidey, Barlow, Beams, Murphy, Watson, Swallow, Powell-Pepper (Myers, Freeman)
    RUC: Sandy, Vardy/Giles (Preuss, Pierce)
FWD: Macrae, Miller, Heeney, Bennell, Elliot, Lovell (Balic, Pickett)

    Thanks Guys

    • Luke

      January 24, 2017 at 12:15 pm

Very risky to go without at least one of danger/rocky. Hodge on the wrong side of 30, would much rather fit in a docherty/laird/JJ. Also a few too many in that awkward price range for me (Hartlett, hibbo, murphy, watson, swallow, sandy, vardy/giles, bennell, elliot). Also can’t see miller’s output warranting a selection.

Sorry to be harsh, still like a lot of selections in your team but definitely needs some work!

      • CrozaN.

        January 24, 2017 at 12:37 pm

Good advise, dont think thats harsh at all.

Still think Hodge is an alright pick though, should get more mid time now with Lewis/Mitchell gone IMO, should score well, just a matter of how many games will he play?

        • Luke

          January 24, 2017 at 12:44 pm

Definitely still an alright pick! But i can see laird/docherty/JJ averaging 5-10 more and worth the extra coin to avoid the games missed due to injury/suspension! Personal opinion though, been burnt too many times by him

    • Chris

      January 24, 2017 at 12:49 pm

I don’t mind the Watson and Murphy picks as both can average 95-100. I think you need a solid premo ruck though, one of Gawn, Grundy, Martin or Goldy. Overall whilst it’s risky, there’s plenty of potential for cash growth across all lines and if you got lucky you could have a full side of promos fairly quickly

  3. Chris

    January 24, 2017 at 12:42 pm

    Ruck: Gawn, Martin (Pierce, Frampton)

For: Macrae, Caddy, Heeney, Roughead, McLuggage, McCarthy (Eddy, Pickett)

5K remaining. Not set in stone that I’ll go with Danger yet but he’s there for now

    • gary why you lyon

      January 24, 2017 at 1:21 pm

I would go with one of Danger and Rocky, just because I dont think both can sustain there value and having both might shrink the bank. Could be worth pocketing an extra 100k from downgrading Danger and trying to get a mid pricer for either Myers, Barrett, Freeman. I dont like 3 rookies on the field, especially in the mid as they might not all get regular games.

Sorry add Jarrad Jansen to the forward line. Thoughts?

          • Another Arctic Flying wombat Panda of Doom named Drowning fish

            January 24, 2017 at 2:38 pm

It’s an alright looking team, personally I’m not starting Taylor Adams because of his price and also he suffered injuries last year and I feel that he will have a few poor games, drop in price then you can Pick him up. JJ is a gun, same with Mills, set for big things this year. THe rest are all standard.

Mid- Rocky is a great M1, Fyfe at 2 may be an issue, you are rocking Fyfe, Prestia, Heppell, Beams, O’Meara and Myers who all have missed multiple games last year or missed the whole year, I believe everyone needs 2-3 players who showed some consistency in 2016 and not just 1. 6 payers who fall into that inconsistent category is too many for me. I suggest dropping O’Meara to a rookie, and grabbing a:
Steven, Bont, treloar, Hanners, Parker, Titch, Priddis, Lewis, SHIEL, or even a crouch boy,
I think you just lack some consistency In the guts,

Ruck- Gawn is a lock, and it’s just determining who you are willing to take a punt on for a R2, Nankervis is to be watched but I am considering him.

FWD- I feel your Fwd line may be a tad strong but you are running a different structure to most, no McGluggage or McGrath, so no premium rookies,

Interesting squad, just not a fan of the Mid.

            Hope it helps

    • Another Arctic Flying wombat Panda of Doom named Drowning fish

      January 24, 2017 at 3:44 pm

My team has like 50% of rd 11 players, I think if you try to include 3-4 rd 12 players and maybe 5-6 rd 13 players, you should go ok, just make sure 2-3/4 of those non rd 11 bye players will be keepers,
For me I’ve got Danger, Jake Kelly, Hodge, Heppell and Sandi,
But you will find, most of the gun players you want to start with have the rd 11 bye round

      • The Mad Gaffer

        January 24, 2017 at 5:52 pm

        Good point, cheers mate.

What interests me is the actual effect byes have on total score, if any in the long run. Possibly having to play bench players where it could be avoided would have a slight negative impact, but other than that I struggle to see why else overall points would be effected by them?

Like you said, having a keeper each bye round should be enough as having a good captain should be the goal.

have changed martin and parker to lewis and ablett
and docherty and McGrath to Hodge and Hibberd

      • Another Arctic Flying wombat Panda of Doom named Drowning fish

        January 24, 2017 at 6:33 pm

Seems like with those trades you made have sent your team backwards. Martin has less doubts on him than Ablett and Parker is still a tackling machine, those 2 are better than Gaz and Lewo
Dochers is the best backline player this year and you trade him along with the no 1 draft pick for hodge who is still in his prime but may miss some games to injury and rests throughout the year and Hibberd who is playing at a new club and hasn’t played in 1 and a half years.

As for your squad, (BEFORE THE TRADES)
Backline is solid, Laird Dochers and JJ are all massive disposal guys. Then 3 young kids who will all get game time due to their teams lacking in certain areas.

Mid- Martin was my first choice earlier and should be considered for a top 8 mid, Titch is great, Fyfe coming off injury, but looks like he is ready to go, you have spent too much money in your mid, Melksham is not recomended, beams is always injury prone and yes (ignore above) Parker has had an injury interrupted preseason, maybe I’d look to Hanners for a better option or look at a GWS player such as Shiel, Coniglio, Ward, Kelly…
In summary, drop Melksham and upgrade a premo such as beams,

Rucks- are unique, I like them but Sauce has questions around how he will got his season, Watch over the nab to make your decision,

Fwd- Dahlhaus is a gun but I still rate Macrae over him, I think he is that one player you sort of have to start with. Heeney at F2 scares me, think you need someone else with him like Smith, Caddy, Dunkly, Franklin…. Don’t like Knight, scares me whether or not he’ll play.
But i like the idea, good work, keep playing around with it and if you don’t like my ideas, then don’t use them, I won’t be offended, only here to give an opinion, not an order telling you what to do.

        Hope it helps

I wouldn’t touch Barlow, he would have to put in a massive couple scores in pre season for me to consider him.

I’m a Carlton man, but don’t have either Simpson or Docherty, it’s hard to pick either though, I’d go Simpson just because to me he use to be the general of the back lines, until Shaw took that role last season.

So far I believe this is my best team on paper I’ve made this fantasy season. My team name is ‘I Set The Barlow’.

    RUC: Smartin, Ryder (Frampton, Pierce)

FWD: Smith, Stevens, Heeney, Roughead, Bowes, Lovell (Eddy, Daicos)
    2k left.

    A) Drop Thurlow for Berry and upgrade Hodge to Laird.
    B) Drop JPK for Steven and upgrade Shiels to Beams.
