The Numbers – Round 3

Numbers… it’s what DT is all about. Price changes; averages; break-evens… the list goes on. This week carried an extra ounce of bad luck, if only because the round started on Friday 13th. Fortunately for the Blues, they saw none of it as they began R3 in blistering fashion. However several massive injuries later; and the positivity from that win has lessened significantly as the gods inflicted the carnage that we received in the days following. Were you affected by said carnage? How did you fare this round?

Numbers… it’s what DT is all about. Price changes; averages; break-evens… the list goes on. This week carried an extra ounce of bad luck, if only because the round started on Friday 13th. Fortunately for the Blues, they saw none of it as they began R3 in blistering fashion. However several massive injuries later; and the positivity from that win has lessened significantly as the gods inflicted the carnage that we received in the days following. Were you affected by said carnage? How did you fare this round?

Let’s have a looks at this week by the numbers…

0 – Number of people who care about the ongoing ‘saga’ that is the Malthouse/ McGuire ‘feud’. Raucous tweets and annoyed radio comments continue to flay on the topic, however none of it is helping Collingwood at the moment as they adjust to new coach Nathan Buckley’s plan. Whilst there is a lot of opinion on the matter, the reality is that Collingwood forced out a Premiership Coach and have chosen Buckley to take the team forward. Whether the Pies’ recent failures are a result of this is open to speculation; however none of it matters – what is done, is done. So get over it and move.

2 – Teams on the brink of ‘end-of-an-era’ status. Both Geelong and Collingwood recorded big losses on the weekend – the second time in 2012 for this to happen. With 6 Grand Final appearances between them in the past 5 years, including 4 Premierships; both sides have dominated the AFL in this modern era. However after both recording poor starts to the season, sitting on only 4 points each after 3 rounds – are their respective reigns over?

3 – Amount of 100+ scores that have been scored against Essendon this year (as stated by tBetta). Admittedly they have only played North and Port, however this definitely bodes well for the Bombers, who’ve shown they don’t like giving up the footy; and are restricting their opposition to inferior numbers during their clashes. One such exception though is the much talked about Gary Jnr; however was the only one to do so for the Suns.

13 – Goals scored in the Freo v Brisbane game on Saturday. In an extremely low scoring game, Brisbane could only muster 5 goals; whilst Freo had just 8 of their own, also kicking an astonishing 16 behinds. In other games, Western Bulldogs could only managed 5.10.40 against a tight St Kilda defence. It’s no surprise to see that the two winning teams in both cases are or were coached by Ross Lyon. He truly is the king of boring football.

15Possessions by Scott Pendlebury v Carlton on Friday night. In his lowest personal tally in any game since the end of 2009, midfielder Andrew Carrazzo did one of the best negating roles in recent history to keep the star Magpie to just 62 points. It was justified then, that Carrazzo was rated best afield in a big win by the Blues.

22Points scored by Fremantle young gun Nat Fyfe on the weekend before being crunched in between two Lions and reinjuring his dodgy shoulder. Not only has he now dropped $36k, but he is facing up to 3 months on the sidelines as Fremantle weigh up putting the star midfielder under the knife again. If you’re one of the 104,000 coaches who have him, now would be a good time to look at replacements.

28Disposals by Giant’s youngster Dylan Shiel v West Coast on Sunday. In his best game yet, Shiel displayed his hallmark ability to find the ball and dispose of it cleanly. Whilst he only returned 74 points, his performance was very encouraging as he is starting to show why he has been touted as ‘the next Chris Judd’. He just needs to lift his work rate off the ball (only had 1 mark and 1 tackle), and he will cement a spot as M6 in many teams (until he’s upgraded for a premium, that is).

82Big thanks to @RLGriffin85 for this one – Points differential between choosing Morris, Kennedy and Greene on the field this weekend over Bugg, D. Smith and Coniglio. As Chook will attest, rookie choices can make or break teams. This week for example – that could’ve been the difference between Top 2,000 and 10,000!

127Total disposals to date in 2012 by the little master himself, Mr. Gary Ablett Jnr – officially becoming the first player on record (since Champion Data stats were recorded) to start the season with 3 consecutive 40+ disposal games. One of the few ‘Untaggables’, Gary is absolutely unstoppable and is working hard to give his famous father a run for his money as the best ever. Surely he can now be considered as the undisputed best player of the modern era?

68,488Amount of Brian Lake owners frustrated by his actions of the weekend. In a moment described as a ‘brain fade’ by the Bulldogs, Lake carelessly struck St Kilda player, Simpkin in a move that is likely to see him miss 1-3 matches through suspension. 2012 seems to be a case of ‘Fool me once, shame on me; fool me twice, shame on you’ with Lake. First he scores a lowly 29, backed up by a positive 93; then he gets a respectful 74, only to ruin this with his pending suspension. For those that still have him – Take the $11k he’s made and get him out!

Send me your ‘Numbers’ for the week @McRathDT

The Benchmark

It was a dire round in DT this week so instead of mentioning the top weekly scorer I’m going to look at the overall #1 coach 3 rounds in. With a weekly average of 2232, Goaldon Boots coach, Don appears at the top of the Leaderboard after his solid R3 effort of 2154 was enough to push him to the top. Another who started with 4 x R13 Bye Premiums in the backline, His quartet of Goddard, Deledio, Carrazzo and Birchall give him a solid standing, whilst Bugg and Hargrave have been serviceable for him as D5 and D6. He has the best of the best in the midfield, with Ablett, Boyd, Mitchell, Watson and Pendlebury giving him a great platform for success. His risky ruck combo of Kreuzer and 3 rookies appears to be paying off at this stage; as is his decision to start with Hawthorn young gun Whitecross over Buddy. His structure is great and he’s picked a great team. However he may need to trade out a premium back during the byes to stay with the pack and avoid several backline donuts.

Whore of the Week

It would be remiss of me to not mention the amazing feat of Gary Ablett this round. After getting the nod in R2, he backed up with another outstanding performance worthy of 3 Brownlow votes. His 44 touches and 2 goals once against displayed his dominance at Metricon Stadium with a whopping 162 points.

However this week’s WotW award goes to West Coast rising star, Scott Selwood. In a dominating display against AFL easy-beats GWS, Selwood was superb – totalling 31 touches, 10 marks, 9 tackles and 1.2 goals. His 150 points shows that he has the capacity to match the elite – and with his 3-Round average of 126.33, he currently sits at # 3 overall this year. In the absence of Priddis, he is turning into a true premium midfielder.

Coach’s Pet

This is the player who has attracted the largest attention (or close to) and subsequent selection in people’s teams around the grounds in any given week. This week we have a new hero in Brendan Whitecross. Mentioned as one of my ‘Uniques’ earlier this year, Whitey has exploded in 2012, averaging a 111.7 over the first 3 rounds and already rising $34,200. Already being traded into a further 1.1% of teams (as of Monday morning), his stocks are sure to rise over the next week and should see him owned by many more than the 2.8% of coaches who currently have him. He’s relishing a role in the Hawks midfield; and could emerge as one of the best buys of the season – but are you game enough to jump on?

Value Pick

Based on a simple Dollars/Points ratio, I give you a simple way to display value (admittedly biased towards rookies given their low starting cost).

This week my pick is more unique. Saints defender Tom Simpkin played only his 2nd game for the year on the weekend for a great return of 106 points to be the best of the sub-$200k players. His $197,900 price tag gives him a weekly value of $1866.98/pt and is on the all-important bubble. Set to rise about $40k next week, he could be a good point of difference in your backline.

(Worst) Trade of the Week

It has been talked about all weekend; and this kind of thing will become a regular in the Numbers pending positive feedback. This week’s (Worst) Trade of the week goes to the poor coaches who ditched the frustrating Greg Broughton for running Essendon midfielder/defender, Courtenay Dempsey. Set to lose $30k after his role change dictated a constant flow of scores in the 60’s; many jumped on the in-form mid-pricer in what seemed like a solid trade on paper. With Dempsey going down with a hamstring injury on Saturday for a paltry return of 10; and Broughton subsequently returning to midfield form recording a positive 109, this will be a decision coaches could rue all year. On a brighter note, word is that Dempsey’s injury may not be too bad and could play as early as this weekend against rival Carlton.

Made a bad trade and want to vent? Let me know on Twitter @McRathDT

The Round Up

Highlights – Good to see my unique players, Gibbsy and Robbo performing to their potential against the Pies; Ablett once again dominating (as my captain) against a shaky Bombers outfit; Buddy, Broughton and Rocky bouncing back to form; and my Blues going 3/3 after finally beating Collingwood (in style) in an outstanding performance on Friday night.

Lowlights – Nat Fyfe going off after his shoulder popped out; Pendles being tagged out the game for 62 was a coach killer; and the Magnet failing to back up his first 2 weeks, recording a lowly 48 (I guess he can’t do it all himself). Also, injuries to Ball, Leuenberger and Birchall; as well as poor performances by several Cats – made R3 a week to forget for many.

Team McRath – Was a much better performance, netting me a solid 2071 during a bad week of DT. Fyfe’s injury gutted me, whilst Pendles and Magner let me down personally after big R2 scores. Good to see most of my premiums firing together – we’re starting to show signs of what we can do. When all the boys are on the same wavelength, watch out. I’m likely to trade in Danger or Whitecross this Friday to come in for Fyfe – otherwise Team McRath will go into next week’s matchups largely unchanged. Also happy with getting a win in all of our leagues, good times ahead.

Round 3 was another week of ups and downs, with LTI’s striking; and emerging stars Howe and Whitecross firing. Looking forward to a better week in which I can hopefully finally break my first 2200 for the year. As always, be frugal with your trades and keep your head up – a week is a long time in Dream Team!

Also, look out for my ‘Greatest Dream Team of All’ article in the next 24 hours – and see who’s made the grade in R3.

Feedback appreciated as always. Also – if you’re not already… follow me in the Twittersphere: @McRathDT

      Possible options
      The highest average: Whitecross
      The safe bet: Mitchy Robbo

Throw in Roughead, Beams (1 more week), Zaharakis (2-3 weeks), Sidebottom, Waite, Dangerfield.

Heaps of options out there. Be patient with your choice.

who to go if you already have Robinson, Sidebottom though? I’m leaning towards Whitecross but thinking maybe throw a decent rookie into the forward line and getting a preforming defender or mid fielder to give the same value lost points that Fyfe was giving us?

I doubt it, teams may have thought he’d drop off this year but after his last couple of performances i’d say there will be a lot more attention payed to him from now on and he won’t score and rack up the possessions so easily.

was at the game, boomer ran loose and had plenty of time in the midfield.

he looked good, and with no added pressure of the captaincy looks to be free and enjoying his footy.

i’m seriously considering him, will / should be good the following week against the Suns. Always a reliable scorer over the past years. Just don’t captain him against the Saints – one team he always struggles against with the Clint Jones tag.

As for other tags, he will get them, but with Wells, Swallow, Ziebell and Bastinac all stepping up another level Harvey isn’t the no 1. player anymore.

Nice one McRath. As well as the dreaded 22 from Fyfe I also had the 7 from the Berger. 29 is the number I will remember all year.

On a happier note Fyfe looks like he will play on Friday so I only have to do one trade.

Because neither will be keepers. Geary has played Port, Gold Coast and The dogs. Not flash opposition. If you were gonna have him youd have him from the start. You wanna use your trades to get in keepers. A far better option would be fyfe to Robbo (or someone equivalent) and Pfieffer to Treloar (someone who will make you cash for GOOD upgrades).
But if you wanna end up down shit creek without a paddle by all means do your proposed trades….
You have much to learn young Jack….

Sorry Jack – I thought you were Patrick….

14 and second year sounds right. I remember when I was 14. The internet wasn’t invented then. Whilst you are young I need to be honest with you. Fyfe with one arm would still be a chance to outscore Geary for the year. Clancee probably isn’t in the best 30 maybe 40 options in the forwards (although he is ahead of Pfieffer because he isn’t playing).

Hold the horses. Maybe look at Treloar for Pfief. More importantly wait till friday night and check the teams before lockout. Pretty good chance Clancee will be sub and Fyfe will play.

Watched Pfeiffer in the local league on the weekend and he was outstanding. He’s an absolute workhorse and I think a couple of Port’s under-performing kids will make way this week for some bigger bodies against the Pies, and I reckon Pfeiff will be one of them. Hold onto him until Friday young fella!

Selwood and Gibbs is a hard one… As selwood at the moment is not performing as good as I thought he would but in saying that he has scored 3 tons (114, 102 and 106) Your choice with that one, Carltons a team that will be top 3 so probably gibbsy.. And I’m still confident in Martin. So i’d go with Martin ovout of those 4

I’ll only be trading Fyfe this week. I’m considering either Robinson or Sidebottom as a direct swap or giving up my DPP link and bringing Murphy in.

I don’t love Murphy as a DTer so am not inclined to pay full price for him. I think Robinson will continue to score well, but it is a tough choice between him and Sidebottom. Sidey is $30k cheaper and has a Round 12 bye which suits my forward line better. That extra cash could really help with some of the trades I have planned over the next few rounds.

Any opinions on the best option for me here?

Don’t like Murphy as a dter?? He hasn’t scored less than 115 all year and only looks to be getting better after 139 against the pies (statistically his worst dt opponent in the past) ! Whats not to like? I had him from day 1 last year and day1 this year and I’m all smiles :0)

I had him from the middle of last year and he was a little disappointing. I certainly don’t think he is a bad pick, but I feel he has the occasional tendency to be BOG and score 95 DT which isn’t ideal. Since I can only have one of him and Mitchell before the bye, I would probably prefer Mitchell. I don’t like Carlton much either, but that has little to do with not wanting Murphy this week.

I wouldn’t be going too crazy about Carlton as a DT team yet. They have had comfortable wins over Richmond and Brisbane as well as a bizarre win against Collingwood which may have been good, but is very hard to draw conclusions from.

I think Murphy is a very good player, but do not think he will increase his average markedly from last year. I would expect something like 110 as an average, which means he is overpriced right now.

lmao gee your bias really does overule your brain doesn’t it! There was nothing “bizarre” about the blues win last week. They ran rings around the pies from the opening bounce like they’ve done to every team they’ve played this year and with their speed, tenacity and skill made them look completely outclassed, and will continue to do so this week and most weeks there after.
How can you honestly watch them play and still consider them a team not to be taken extremely seriously? Its not 2001 anymore dude, the “blues are shit” lines just don’t hold any weight anymore.
As for murphy only averaging 110 this year in your opinion, he’s already averaging about 123. So you expect him to start putting in a heap of 80’s and 90’s scores do you?
Time to swallow your pride dude and take a reality pill.

What are you talking about? My impression I got from watching that game on Friday night was that it was a bit strange. I never meant that Carlton weren’t in great form, but just that some of the stats in that game were a bit inflated. I wouldn’t be expecting all those big tons every week, no matter how well they may be playing as a team. There’s no anti-Carlton bias in that statement.

And as for Murphy, of course he’s going to chuck in some 80s and 90s along the way. It’s very hard to get a ton every week, especially for someone like Murphy. As I said he is a better player than DTer, so he can score 90 and win you a game (as opposed to someone like Swan who is more a DTer). It would be impossibly naive to think he will average 120 for the year based on what? 3 games.

ok apologies, obviously misconstrued the “bizarre” statement. I do however genuinely believe Murphy has stepped up to elite level and can’t see him dropping below the tonne this year much at all. I expect him to average atleast 115 this year and show the same kind of consistency we’ve come to expect from swan, pendles, boyd and co.. time ofcourse will prove who’s right.

I’m completely not a Blues fan, however Marc Murphy is on fire. I agree with Dools, I think Murphy’s made the progression to the out & out elite midfield group. Collingwood was put to the sword the other night, of which Murphy played a fairly significant role. I would select him over Mitchell right now (though Mitchell is part of my planned midfield structure by seasons end). Where’s the tag going to in the Hawks midfield? Where’s the tag going to in the Blues? Not usually Murphy. I think seasons end will show Murphy to be right up there DTwise & that’s ultinately what DT is all about: speculation. Murphy may score the odd 80-90, but who doesn’t?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wayne Carey was on the money with his comments about the rift at the Maggies… word on the street is Luke Ball is furious with Bucks after he apparently went against the club doctor’s advice and put Ball back on the field after he initially injured his knee. Could have some serious implications if there’s any truth to that (including for Freo with the Fyfe situation and for Fyfe owners).

Worst trade for the week has to be Hale to McCauley… 104 points worse off for the round (and two extra losses in my leagues) and looking like being stuck with a dead weight on the bench after Roughie showed some seriously good form in the ruck.

The essential part of any good dreamteamer is in a high fibre breakfast. They do say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Good trade decisions and insightful information proccessing is fundamental to becoming an elite dreamteamer. You never know you might be driving a FJ Cruiser to the shops in the not to distant future to be getting your breakfast.

I will start by saying that you want plenty of carbohydrates to give you a good energy release as the day progresses, this will keep you feeling fresh and be able to make the wisest dcisions for your dreamteam. Remember that you are only given 24 trades in a year and you have got to take into account some other factors such as injuries, suspensions, fishing trips, betting scandals, viruses and cramping issues. The cramping issue can be a big one because you are already getting pick pocketed with the non- emergency back up. These people generally don’t have a good breakfast leading their bodies to seize up under the heat and steain of the physical workload. All could of been prevented by eating a nutritious and energy packed breakfast.

When playing in humid conditions this can increase the pressure of the bodies workload, resulting in quicker fatigue and more bodily acids building up. This is when hydration need to be increased to prevent cramps and muscle fatigue. I am a firm believer that you will get out of your body what you put in, so by saying that if you eat ‘junk’ then your not likely to be getting the most out of your meals.

So to summarise my statement I recommend that on the Friday before you do anything start your day with a nutritious breakfast with plenty of carbohydrates before you hit your trade button.

6 – the number of days I will have to wait till I can trade out fyfe. With only 2 k in the bank, my options this week are waite, cloke or roughhead. If I wait till next week, i can ‘potentially’ get in stevie j (who im hoping will be valued at 452 k lol), which is the perfect replacement for fyfe based on bye structure. However, i fear this will only work if fyfe doesnt play this weekend, as a red/green vest could see his price plummet even further into the 300 k region…decisions decisions!

there’s no way that if fyfe plays on friday, or indeed plays through his shoulder injury that he will ever be vested. that would be completely pointless. his shoulder injury is in no way going to effect his match fitness (match fitness being the reason barlow and mundy were introduced as subs). the only way hes going to see the vest is if he pops it out so badly during a game that he can’t play on. after seeing him do it several times last year and recover ok, i will be confident in keeping fyfe if he is named this week.

I have Redden. Brisbane has bye round 11.

The guy is returning to being a stud. He will be partnered with Mundy and that equals 100’s.

And I agree…why so many panic buttons getting pressed???? These premos getting trading out is crazy…the trades will be needed for the 3 bye weeks and for upgrading for the finals.

Trading to finish top 4 in your comp now is insane. You need to trade for the finals just before the finals. your team now should at least make the top 8.

Have Lyon’s patience….that man has vested Barlow 2 games…then he vested Mundy…he is waiting on Lachie Neale…and persisting with Michael Johnson, Keppler, mayne, ibbo and dare I say it hilly!!!
Have his patience and your dreamteam will look good for the finals.

Ok, I kinda agree. Redden doesnt seem to be the premium he once was though. I could hold onto him and wait and see how things pan out, but I’m almost certainly going to trade him out before round 11. (I really want to beat my arch nemesis no matter what!) So its a case of getting him out now before his price plummets too much and getting onto Barlow before he guns it.

I also have Fyfe, Shaw and Martin and I’m going to keep them. (if Fyfe is named might trade) Its more of when is the best time to sell Redden. Now? Or wait until round 10 and hope he guns it and gets his price up.

If I’m going to trade him anyway wouldnt now be the best bet?

Im sorry but what has Martin done so far. I am happy to swap him out with Barlow as I think he will be a 100 pt per game person this year from what ive seen. Martin on the other hand has’nt exactly set the world on fire and that can probably be an excuse against Carlton and Collingwood but I would of thought the numbers would of been better against Melbourne. Now they are set to play a fired up Geelong, I think Martin will be lucky to get 50 points so I am glad to burn a trade for a bit more certainty in my players (barring injuries).

BTW I might be the only bloke whos happy with trading out broughton last week too, F**k that rollercoaster ride too!!!

I think people need to be a bit careful with Whitecross. Feel free to jump on, but up until these 3 weeks he was borderline best 22 given the Hawks depth. With Hodge and Shiels coming back, he is a good chance to move forward more and certainly could be vested. I am very happy to bet against him, even if he has a low BE.

    Fyfe for Michael Johson
    heres my reasoning

    positives:
averaging well, , can sub with smedts to help my struggeling backline, DPP link, good kick to handball ratio, high ceiling, will never get subbed, kicks the odd goal (hopefully mor ewith fyfe out and fremantle playing better, played every game last year and rarely gets injured or suspended, low price, low BE and fianlly….. now that ross lyon is coach, the ball is just getting kicked around the backline with lots of +6’s coming his way!!!!!!!!!!!
Negatives: scored 5 less than 50’s last year, all before rd 9. risky pick. basically what i trying to say is his inconsistent

    any one else jumping on……

Been there before. He is a tease. Does get lockdown jobs as well. A bit like a Jason Blake. Was better when he was thrown into the ruck on the odd occasion but no need for that anymore.

      Pass.
