Assessing the Damage: Round 3

We had a bit of carnage over the weekend with plenty of FMDT moments. The big talk has been about Nat Fyfe and his shoulder. Will he play, will be be out for an extended period of time… and what should we do. But we can’t forget about Matthew Leuenberger’s 6 week injury as well as the findings of the Match Review Panel.

The injury that has dominated discussion from the weekend is the shoulder of Nathan Fyfe. There is no word on how long he will be out but the Fremantle Football Club today released a statement that said “the 20-year-old and the club are optimistic about his chances of playing against St Kilda on Friday night”. The good news is that being a Friday night game, we’ll know if he is playing or not before lockout. Work out what you might do with him if he’s out. If he doesn’t play, I’ll probably be looking at him after seeing what’s happened in the past with shoulder injuries.

Brisbane ruckman Matthew Leuenberger will miss at least 6 weeks after suffering an Achilles tendon injury in the same game. This needs to be a trade. While dropping over $50K in value, you need to go to a premium ruckman and you still have that opportunity still being priced at over $400K. Billy Longer will have more of a pivitol role at the Lions now, but personally, I wouldn’t be chasing him as it’s not worth the trade from Stephenson, Giles or Redden.

Keep any eye on the media this week for news on any other injuries.

The Match Review Panel (MRP) have offered some popular Dream Team picks a week on the sidelines from incidents on the weekend. Adam Goodes may challenge his week for rough conduct… which was a stupid slide into his opponent – which he has done before. Brian Lake was pretty lucky to get away with one week, in my opinion. I think his 5 year good record has saved him a bit here. Finally, one of my boys (who is likely to be delisted from the Warne Dawgs this week), Jack Grimes can accept a week for his sling tackle.

my problem is that I have both Fyfe and Leuenberger….my rookie thoughts are to bench them and wait for more of the ‘premos’ to drop in price and then use them in a few weeks to cash in….. or should I bite the bullet and get berger out?

Ahh such is the DT life….

I will only be trading fyfe if he goes for surgery.. If he doesn’t, why does everyone think it will affect his scoring ?? He played all last year with the same injury !!

      April 16, 2012 at 11:21 pm

McEvoys been really average for me so far. Wish i stuck with McIntosh and saved the coin. McEvoy also plays Sandi this week. He should come good but mayb not this week.

      April 16, 2012 at 11:25 pm

McEvoys been really average or me so far this year. Wish I’d stuck with Mcintosh and saved the coin. He will probly come good but probly not this week as he comes up against Sandi.

Find it ridiculous people are even contemplating that Fyfe will play against the Saints. My personal opinion is that if Fyfe is seeking advice from the very top shoulder surgeons in Melbourne, it must be serious. I hope it is only a 3-6 week thing and that they strap it up and plays out the rest of the year but it is a very strong possibility that Fyfe will go under the knife. Fingers crossed he doesn’t. But, I think it’s very optimistic saying that he might play against the saints this Friday.

    April 16, 2012 at 11:59 pm

    hey kinda new to this.
i have the same dilemma with Fyfe. But also have Dempsey and Golby in DEF.
Not convinced Fyfe will play; he’s only 20, think lyon will think long term rather than short term, and seeing a specialist in melb about his shoulder seems to point that he will go with the surgery resulting in the inevitable EXCLUSION for the entire season.

Im thinking of trading Fyfe for Robbo
and either dempsey (depending how long he’s out for) or Golby for Goddard the next week.
with these trades will leave me with jus over $200k left in the bank.
Im losing money by upgrading two but just wondering should i wait the week or just do both trades this week?

opinions and discussions would be great!

    • jack

      April 17, 2012 at 12:03 am

go fyfe to waite and golby to enright

some of the worst advice i have ever seen

        • crazymofo

          April 17, 2012 at 10:08 am

I would probably go dempsey to goddard and if Fyfye is long term then get Robinson. I would keep Golby, he is not going to go down in price you paid $265 k for him so it was a risk, you may as well keep him and wait for someone like Enright to come good then make the trade, that’s if enright does ever come good.

    • Ingoes

      April 17, 2012 at 12:04 am

You did well to reserve some cash.

These trades are spot on IMO

      • Richdogg

        April 17, 2012 at 12:56 am

Don’t agree with Golby to Enright call. Enright will drop even more next week plus Golby is averaging more than Enright.

I think the Fyfe decision is a matter of waiting. It’s going to be a 50/50 call weather you think he can rebound or if you are concerned his injury will detriment his scoring ability in the future. Last season, I was lucky to select Fyfe from day 1, which rewarded me significantly. He had shoulder problems then and his scoring was exceptional. If he is fit to play this week, I don’t expect his output to really drop.

I’m also in the same situation with Golby. Looking to upgrade him to Goddard if he doesn’t stand up, but I’m giving Golby one more week to see if he can deliver against the Gold Coast.

        Good luck

  15. Big Feller

    April 17, 2012 at 12:13 am

I’m thinking the Fyfe trade might have to happen given Freo’s response to injuries last year (play thru the pain), the fact that Fyfe is very young and a marquee player for them (would look bad running a young gun into the ground), and the fact that Ross Lyon is a blatant liar (just ask Mark Harvey) – there is no way Freo will risk Fyfe again.

I’m thinking either Barlow or a sneaky trade Tom Hawkins – big kid with his tail up and I understand there is an operation now that widens the length between your eyes which he is looking into!

Hey Guys! Trades im looking at this week..

    Golby – Duffield

    Fyfe – Whitecross

But with this i only have 19 trades left… :\ These will be the last trades before upgrading and downgrading (Excluding Injuries like Fyfe and Suspensions), I can hold off on the Golby trade i think, but thoughts? :D

    • graeme

To answer your question, I be careful with Whitecross. Keeping up his current average will be a massive ask.

    • Scott

      April 17, 2012 at 1:32 am

Keep goodes? Isn’t he only gonna get 1 week or so? I’d get rid of fyfe if I had him. I’d go robbo, keep the dpp, playing well and in the right team dt wise. Or sidebottom. Or Tomahawk, I think he’s due for a decent year, still probs only average 70-80 but you get 100k back as well

  20. Tex

    April 17, 2012 at 2:32 am

To take my mind off possible trades or not, here’s an on-field decision I have to make this weekend…need to choose 2 out of these 4 to be on the field:

Magner, Greene, Shiel, McDonald (back from suspension)

I’m leaning towards starting McDonald but the other three are line ball to me for the last spot. Thoughts?

    • Luke

      April 17, 2012 at 5:59 am

I’d go with Magner and Shiel myself, which is what I have been doing with my team. Though, it’s going to be between those two for me this week, if I go through with the Fyfe for Murphy trade.

    • Ghost

      April 17, 2012 at 6:04 am

You could alway’s have a look at your direct opponent and make the decision based on who they have. They are unlikely to trade in or out any of those players in the coming week with the carnage that’s going on.

Personally, I think Magnet is still your best bet.

    • Ethan

      April 17, 2012 at 11:27 am

      Magner a definite.

Ross Lyon interviewed on SEN now, confident Fyfe will play, Fyfe said he’s feeling good & wants to play.
Lyon said they are getting 2nd opinion re: long term implications.
Then he referred to Tadhg Kennelly who played a season subluxing his shoulder on occassions.
He then said we might play him to the point it subluxes one more time, then we tap him out……

I am looking at rough for fyfe but not so sure…

        • MC

          April 17, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Funny thing shoulders, I have a busted up shoulder and is the reason I cant play footy. Doctors say that I need to get a reconstruction like what Fyfe had, (Im the same age as Fyfe). They then carry on to say that the reconstruction has 50% or there abouts, chance of fixing the problem however it is still as likely to pop out and redamage while playing contact sport. This is what has happened to Fyfe.

I think he will keep playing with the busted shoulder, and be taking pain killers through out the game to get him through. He will be rested in some weeks because I have played through a season with that problem and my shoulder would be aching even before I ran out.

    • Felix Jones

      April 17, 2012 at 10:25 am

Don’t keep Fyfe even if he does return he won’t have a big game
and then he will just go down more.
Then you will have to get a cheap player unless you have got lots of money.

      • ThePretenders

        April 17, 2012 at 2:14 pm

Fyfe is a keep…It’s a long season and he’s so far played 2/3 shut down teams (Cats and Swans) just watch out when he features vs a Melb, gws he’ll kill it. If you’re trading him out now, that means hes not in your plans for the rest of the year, way too risky for one of the best DPP Fwds, i can risk benching him this week even if he doesnt play hes still going to feature after that.

My advice HANG ON TO HIM!

i got some cash in the kitty, i can bring in marc murphy and have 96k left. or i can just bring in buddy but my plan was for porpz to fatten up first there.

if its true and lyon states that one more sublux of his shoulder and they’ll ”tap him out”. – yikes!!!

you have to consider fyfe last year and probably just marvel at the fact he played on. – did he really play when he shouldn’t due to the fact freo had so many out?? if this guy plays, teams are gonna shirt front the plums out of him

Time for John McCarthy to lift this weekend for Kiwi’s Killers. Averaging 84. If he continues at 84 he will pick up $55k in the next three weeks, if he can just squeeze in a 100 he’ll go up $75k.

Overall I dont think he’s failed (after 3 rounds) but a hundred or two would make it an out and out success. No better time than this weekend v his old club.

    • Jacko

      April 17, 2012 at 11:49 am

I’m with you Kiwiii. Put McCarthy in on the basis that if he turned into a keeper that’s great, otherwise he is the path to either Barlow or another underpeforming premo. But you’re right a ton along the way wouldnt hurt.

    April 17, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Im thinking this is cool, trade Fyfe today guys !!!

I wont be.. I may even give him a week off. I had him last season and he had problems then however still was outstanding..

  29. luke

    April 17, 2012 at 1:00 pm

ok so im one of the few that has been handed a lifeline too with only goodes the only one to affect me… maybe?
i think the rockcliffe call is too early as he is a premium and there is no need to blow trades especially since they are playing GC this week! so im defying the guys advice and time will tell if im right!
so no trades for me this week but holding onto spuds like the super sub tom lynch and greene who will drop money after this week…

solution: trade green for mcdonald next week and if lynch performs poorly there is another GWS guy who played last week and ill downgrade to him leaving me around $500k in the kitty.

i have only used 1 trade so far so this will gimme upgrade to cox and prob someone better then golby like birchall?

    wat u guys think??

    • portetdaspet

      April 17, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Greene is set to nosedive this week with a BE of -30, jump off now.

      • luke

        April 17, 2012 at 1:26 pm

wat r u on about… i said after this week… i dont see him scoring 90 to 100’s again with shiel getting more game time in the guts!

        • portetdaspet

          April 17, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Greene will keep going up for a few weeks yet. He would need to score sub 50s to lose money at his current value, which I’d say is unlikely. Nothing wrong with trading him for McDonald though. The real question is why you didn’t pick him in the first place.

          • luke

            April 17, 2012 at 2:12 pm

i knew he was going to be suspended… turned out to be a great move not getting him…
if green scores well 80+ he stays otherwise he is chopped and ill take the hundred grand profit…
i prefer to keep shiel and magner as they have more upside and i have ablett, boyd, rockliffe, mitchell and selwood already in my midfield!

    April 17, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Who is better to hold onto out of Stanton and Watson, I can’t really tell who is more likely to get higher figures.

I’m thinking of getting Scott Sellwood in.

Anyone have any idea wether Sellwood will keep up his numbers? has he been lucky in the first few rounds?

  31. Patrick

    April 17, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Need to trade out Ball and Fyfe. Want to bring in Franklin for Fyfe, meaning I can afford all midfielders bar Boyd, Swan and Pendlebury. Wondered what people thought the best choice was. I was tossing up between Murphy, Mitchell and S. Selwood. Downgrading isn’t an option as I’ve only got two premium midfielders in Ablett and Priddis, and don’t want to rely on rookies. Cheers.

    • Nealos

      April 17, 2012 at 1:58 pm

I’d probably looking at Mitchell or J.Selwood, or even a cheaper option is Scotty Selwood, brang him in last week and did very well, or even Jobe Watson

Fyfe for Waite?? He seems to have started of ok, hopefully doesn’t punch anyone and look at the ball delivery he gets… thoughts?

One other thing, is it too early to lose patience with Rioli?

Moved Fyfe to my mids and Martin to the forward line, to enable a straight swap with Barlow.
Initially tempted by Carrazzo’s coming projections, but figure Micky B has plenty of upside both in terms of points and dollar signs.
Any thoughts on this? The trade has been done to see what it looks like, but obviously I am hovering over the reverse button until Friday night.

Looking into the situation, i think I’ve decided to trade Fyfe, too much risk involved with keeping him, may even be a late withdrawal even if picked..

My options i believe should be picked from Rounds 11 and 12, as i have 2 premo’s from Round 13, and 1 from 11, one from 12 not including fyfe.

    My main options i believe:

Round 11:Adams, Boomer Harvey, Cornes and Maybe Tippett

Round 12: Chappy, Steve J, Beams, Zaha and Cloke,

I was thinking Robinson or Whitecross but is 3 FWD premo’s from Round 13 too much?

If you have the DPP swap available for Fyfe, what is wrong with Lenny Hayes and pocketing a bit of coin along the way ? The diff between him and Barlow is diddly squat so is it only a matter of opinion. It might be a POD if all roads lead to Barlow.

Well I started the season with Lenny, and I’ve got no regrets on that front certainly. I think Barlow suits my structure more as a straight swap. I’m not sure quite how I will handle the bye rounds yet, but I don’t think he complicates things for me.

i think with Fyfe, Ross Lyon wont play him this week… as he has the reputation on waiting til the player is 100%… look at mundy… he was begging to play and Ross took his time with him…

i think is fyfe does get a game he will be sub material for the next 2 (minimum) rounds.

    which will affect his price…

    trade him out… only option…

dude the only reason mundy and barlow were ‘sub material’ for the first 3 rounds is because they lacked match fitness. fyfe’s shoulder injury doesnt impact on his match fitness whatsoever. if fyfe plays i guarantee he won’t be the starting sub, and as long as his shoulder remains in tact he won’t be getting subbed off. there are certainly more options out there than simply trading him out…
