Like those rotting carcases the Americans chasing a million bucks on Survivor mung into from time to time, a few of our rookies are now well past their use by date.

If you’ve got the cash in the bank, you’ll find plenty of fallen premiums – or cash fowls – littering the DT landscape at the moment. Upgrades, then, aren’t the issue.

Those looking to make some dough with a downgrade could be in trouble this week, however, with slim pickings in the two-game ranks.

Three-or-more-gamers

Quite a few coaches picked up Jarrod Kayler-Thomson last week when Richmond mid and pre-season stud Dustin Martin had a visit from General Soreness, the leader of the army charged with taking out our favourite rookies. The 17,000 coaches who brought the Hawthorn youngster in would’ve been disappointed by the bad case of third-game smalts he suffered, scoring 46 after a 65 and 101. Still, he enters round 7 with a breakeven of -48, which is the best of this lot if you don’t count injured Melbourne midfielder Rohan Bail (-49), who’s listed as a test this week.

If it wasn’t Kaylor-Thomson, lots of people were bringing in one of three rookie defenders for peaked Geelong back Josh Hunt. Concerns over Simon White’s job security at Carlton meant he was the least selected of the three, but the tall fella outscored both Adelaide’s Phil Davis (56) and West Coast’s Ashton Hams (68) with an 84.

Fremantle midfielder Michael Barlow convinced another ten thousand or so coaches that he’s keeper material with his fourth ton in six games. After a slow start, Geelong’s mature forward James Podsiadly got to triple-figures too, resulting in a $60k price rise. That’s $130k overall, then, which has got to be slightly annoying for the coaches who opted for Brisbane’s Tom Rockliffe instead. Rockliffe’s teammate Todd Banfield busted out his best score yet – a 90 – and picked up a Rising Star Award nomination for his troubles, not to mention a shiny, new BE of just 20.

At the other end of the scale are the blokes with the bigger breakevens. Mentioning rotting carcases well past their due date might have been a bit of an exaggeration, but there’s no denying midfielders Ryan Bastinac, of the Kangaroos, Tom Scully, of Melbourne, and Lewis Jetta, of Sydney, are all gradually closing in on their ceilings. All will make less than $10k this week if they maintain their season averages, while Fremantle’s Anthony Morabito has already started bleeding cash.

While it’s not panic stations yet, Morabito, Bastinac, Scully and Jetta owners should at the very least be window shopping at this point. In the window this week are another Docker kid, Nathan Fyfe, a couple of rucks in Matthew Lobbe and Jordan Roughead, and the highly rated but, thus far, poorly performing Ben Cunnington. Well, we can write off the rucks straight away, as no one’s downgrading Robbie Warnock, especially to someone like Lobbe, who’s scored a pair of 28s. For all the hype, Cunnington hasn’t fared much better, making 48 on debut followed by a 36 last week. At least with Cunnington there’s a reasonably decent chance that he’ll feature in plenty more games this year (cue his omission on Thursday), but his price tag of $140k is a major drawback. That leaves Fyfe, a forward, whose scores would make him the most attractive downgrade target of the bunch if it wasn’t for concerns over his long-term chances and the fact that anyone in need of a rookie forward would’ve already snapped up JPod, T-Rock or Davis. Our best hope in the two-gamer bracket has been plying his trade in the VFL for the past two weeks. After being named in Bendigo’s best both times, Ben Howlett can’t be far from a return for the Dons. His BE is -79.

If my rookies are almost ripe but the two gamers stink, there must be some good downgrade targets on the horizon, I hear you hopefully exclaim. Well, not really. Just two players debuted in round six – Adelaide handed a start to Matthew Jaensch, while Fremantle blooded Dylan Roberton in the WA derby. I don’t want to write a post randomly inserting Ss into people’s names, so it’s Roberton, okay? No Ss. Anyway, he’s listed as a back in DT, while they have Jaensch down as a forward. Let’s have another look at them this week but, for the record, Roberton chalked up a 57 and Jaensch scored 68.

        Without a clear forward in my team to actually trade out for him, I’m probably going to skip, but he does look like good value if he can stay injury free and manage to stand just this side of Josh Hill in the queue for selection.

      Word. I’ve got a long-standing rule that I keep the column strictly to rookies, ie first-year players, not rookie-priced players, but I’ve broken that this year with mentions of Gumby and Goose, amongst others, so I guess the precedent is there.

      Alright, Grant got a 92 last week with a 58 before that. A forward priced at $96k, his BE is a Howlett-rivalling -78. A couple of years in the system is in his favour, but I’m not sold that he’s won himself a permanent place in the Bullies’ team yet.

          Schammer no longer in their best 22 doubt he will break in. Sandi has been fine for 6 rounds and if Harvey didnt want back up against cox and naitanui I dont see him doing it any time soon. The return of suban and grover however could possibly cause a reshuffle but IMO roberton and silvagni would make way for them.

            Having a laugh if you think Silvagni will make way for anyone at the Dockers. The guy is rated as a good as pickup as Barlow. He’s been solid and will play 22 games now that there’s no issue of him returning to the rookie list (injury to Headland).

            I wouldnt be so sure. I agree he’s been excellent but i reckon theyd still prefer the experience of grover. Unless they throw Mcpharlin forward I dont think they can have all 4 of them down there. My reasoning also comes of the back of the interview in the silvagni article. Surely if he was certain to hold his spot he wouldnt have said whatever happens he’s in our future plans.

    Keep an eye out for Andrew Strijk of the Eagles. 77k mature aged running Back……..will debut in next few weeks. Sheppard (133k Back) will probably debut this week, and has been playing midfield in the WAFL last couple of weeks.

    well i can honestly say im stuck this week with who to downgrade for…

    will be considering my three rookies silvagni, nason and maguire and the 1-2 x6 weeks shuey, howlett is looking good for shuey but isnt getting me much cash to play with,

    on the other hand my back rookies have no one to go to, im actually considering because he is bound to play and hopefully carve it off half back…..brad sheppard but still only gets me 100k

    glad i didnt get JKT last week i have doubts over if he will get many more games considering mitchell and burgoyne will come back soon ish haha

    looks as though shuey to howlett pending on selection especially considering 4 weeks (thanks welsh) a spot should be up for grabs

      Dyson also goes out of the team with injury. Shury will come back, hold onto him unless you absolutely need someone to put on the field. Don’t expect Howlett to solve your 6th mid problems.

      There only wastes if they are not part of the long term plan. I had 3 zeroes last week and 1 the week before, I didn’t trade to cover any of them as I knew that my games were in the bag. Now that cash cows are maxing out that is the time to trade.

          Exactly…this is the time to start using some trades. If your not using trades than u did’nt pick up good rookies at the start……Plus its POINTS NOT TRADES that count towards your league standing, zeros are bad tobe getting this early.

      If you are not using some NOW, then YOU are wasting them. Unless you are expecting 12 or so injuries to keepers, which, if you aren’t upgrading, is MOST of your keepers.

    I am looking at doing 2 of the following trades this week. Please help me choose which ones to do.

    Gilbee (BE = -1) or Hargrave (BE = 42) –> Kennelly
    Dawes (BE = -18) or Nathan Fyfe (BE = -60) or Jarrad Grant (BE = -78) –> Hitchcock
    Howlet (BE = -79) or Selwood (BE = 68) or Hayes (BE = 82) –> Sylvia

    Is it time to cash in Kennelly? His BE is 79!
    Gilbee is looking really good with that BE of -1.
    I don’t know how good and consistent Hargrave is going to be?
    Which one should I choose?

    Doesn’t look like Hitchcock will be getting another game anytime soon. Worth trading in now?
    Where the hell did this Dawes fella come from? He’s scoring really well; 83 v Ess and 103 v Car! Will he continue this form? Or is it better to get one of these rookies (Fyfe or Grant) instead?

    I’m not happy with Sylvia. I shouldn’t have picked a Melbourne player!!! 125, 112 and then a bloody 68! Plus, he’s stuck in my midfield atm so I can’t put him in the forwards where it would have been better. I regret getting this guy. Could have gotten a better choice like Hayes or Selwood. I know its not really worth a trade but I got feeling this guy is gonna keep on dropping in value (BE = 128), so should I swap him for Hayes or Selwood, or even Howlet which will give me some greatly need $$$ in my bank?

        1. Kennelly is ready to go if he was just a cash cow for ya. Hargrave the better move, saves the cash you said you need? Plus Gilbee’s price well come down again in a couple of rounds.
        2. With Sylvia, don’t go to Howlett, you’ve saved cash in picking Hargrave, premium to a rookie is a bad move, you gotta go premium. Ne 1 of the names you mentioned would be good, i’d prefer Gibbs or Selwood.
        3. Thats your 2 trades for this week, so as long as Hitchcock is on your bench, he’s good for another week b4 u cash in on him.

          Seriously it’s the blind leading the blind… Do not trade Sylvia, he’s a premium keeper who isn’t injured and had one bad game when he was tagged. Don’t trade a premium to a rookie but trade a premium to a premium? Sideways trades for no legit reason(injury or long suspension or massive role change leading to form slump) are the worst. Sylvia will be a bit up down at times but he’ll easily score 90+ this year avg. If you desperate want him out of your kids, and yes you made a mistake picking him there, wait for Gary Rohan to debut, Which he should, then trade out a fwd rookie for him then swapthem around.

      PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE trade Sylvia. He’s had one bad score in a row, after all. If a guy isn’t averaging at least 110 then you need to be getting rid of him, and Sylvia is only averaging 107. I mean, I only trading the spud in a week ago, fooled by those two cracking hundreds, as well as those other two cracking hundreds in the last two round of last year, and I’m getting rid of him. Smashing a hundred in only four of his last five games just isn’t good enough.

        I can see where youre going with that Seamo, I’m going to take a more cautious approach, Nason will be the one to upgrade in my backline. I have Waters, Kennelly, and Maguire, given that they all are performing pretty well (excluding one or two performances) I am going to hang on to them just incase one gets injured which will make my upgrade decision for me. I am worried about pulling the trigger now and have someone else go down in a heap next week! :)

        Waters just over 80 at moment, Hargrave would need to be WELL over that to make it a worthwhile trade. IMO he would need to average at least 95 or more 2 even be close to worth trading for Waters……………..

          obviously it depends on the rest of your backline. if waters is your 7th back and averaging 80+… im sure there are more urgent weak points in your team for now. hargrave has had 1 good score in a game where the ball was chipped around the bullies backline/midfield for 3/4 of it… to be fair hargrave should have been joining gia and gilbee with 150+.

          stick with waters, he will match hargrave (if not outscore him) for the rest of the reason. he is more important in the eagles structure and they always look for him coming out of their defensive 50

        Surely people have more pressing issues than upgrading Waters already. He’s averaging 80+, you’re better off working on other areas where you are weaker and if you have trades left alter in the season thene you can make a move. Even if you are after the swap to Hargrave they have similar breakevens so will be able to do next week and get another chacne to see if Hargrave has actually tunred it around. The dogs backs all racked up points agasint St Kilda because of the game style.

      Ripped it up in a 30 goal win for the 2nds, but so did lot of other guys. He should get some more games, but whether he ever gets an extended run in the 1sts is the million dollar question

      Mitch Banner (for Eagles v West @ Woodville) – Played mainly forward and had a reasonable day but didn’t finish off some of his good work with goals, kicking 0.3. Moved onto the ball in the final quarter and had a good impact at stoppages. Finished with 12 kicks, 4 handballs and 3 tackles

        I can see Grant getting a few more games but when push comes to shove, something like their round 3 team is probably what they’re aiming to have on the park for the finals. He might be a good cow in the meantime though.

        If Fyfe can keep kicking goals, he’s safe. Headland’s LTI means there’s no experienced player waiting to come in to take that role in the team. The downside is relying on a rookie forward’s form being consistent, of course.

        I don’t think either of them is a good enough bet to be worth cashing in Gumby, Duncan or Pods early. Most likely I’m going to upgrade Gumby next week to Jonno Brown, and move Duncan to the bench.

      You can please yourself. Roberts is my team mascot. He’ll never play on my field and unless a bizarre miracle occurs, he won’t be going up in price enough to sell, but he’s a funny looking f**ker and the boys seem to like him. I’m happy with one backup forward (esp. with a total of 4 forward/mids in my mix, two on each line), and plenty of cash cows and upgrade options elsewhere. If he’s worth a sideways trade in your team, you’re in deep shit IMO
