Join me and special guest Heff from The Keeper League in the next head to head battle between premium midfielders Zach Merrett and Tim Taranto. We discuss each player in depth and talk about their pros and cons, give our verdict on who we would pick out of the two players, and if we are keen on starting either player in our side.
Zach Merrett
He has been one of the best scorers in AFL Fantasy since his 3rd season in 2016 where he averaged 117.6. Last year in fact was his highest average since 2017, averaging 112.9 from his 22 games last season. He will once again be one of the top 8 scoring midfielders again, but can you start him at M1? That decision may have a lot to do whether Finn Maginness plays in Round 1 or not. If he does, I expect Merrett to cop the tag. If he doesn’t, against Hawthorn, Zach could start with a bang.
Tim Taranto
Timmy T was on fire to begin last season and the top scorer for essentially the first half of the year, but his scores dropped dramatically after his Round 15 bye. In the first 14 games, he scored 100+ in every single game, with 12 of the 14 games over 110, 9 of the 14 over 120, and 4 of them over 130. In the remaining 9 games, he only went over 100 on three occasions, and none of them were over 120. Fast forward to 2024, we have no idea what Taranto we are going to get. A new coach mixed with an early bye is what will scare a lot of people off and rightly so, but could starting him be a valid play? It would be a POD move for sure, with his ownership under 3%.
