Zero Hanger’s round five injury wrap

A number of key injuries have come out of round five, with the St Kilda-Melbourne clash providing two of the biggest stories of the weekend.

Melbourne are struggling at 1-4, and will be even more under the pump in the backline, after Neville Jetta suffered a knee injury.

Jetta will now undergo surgery, and is set to spend 8-10 weeks on the sidelines. The Dees are still without Jake Lever and Steven May, and are now another man down in the back six.

St Kilda skipper Jarryn Geary sustained a severely corked thigh on Saturday, with only a trip to the hospital saving him from further (and more permanent) damage.

The Saints haven’t put a timeframe on Geary’s injury, but former players Terry Wallace and Paul Roos (who both suffered similar injuries during their careers) say they won’t be surprised if it were season-ending.

Adelaide have lost rebounding defender Wayne Milera for 4-6 weeks following a shoulder injury he picked up during their win over Gold Coast.

With Milera now on the sidelines, look for Rory Laird and Brodie Smith to increase their output.

Richmond has received some bittersweet injury news, with coach Damien Hardwick announcing Jack Riewoldt as a certain starter for their ANZAC Day eve clash with Melbourne.

Riewoldt hurt his wrist in round two, but will take his place in Richmond’s 22 on Wednesday night.

The Tigers were hoping to get captain Trent Cotchin back into their line-up this weekend, although Hardwick confirmed he’s suffered a minor hamstring setback.

Cotchin will now be looking at another 2-3 weeks on the sidelines, with the Tigers suggesting he’ll be out until at least their round eight clash with Fremantle.

Collingwood may miss defender James Aish for ANZAC Day, with the former Lion sitting out half of the Pies’ recent clash with Brisbane with concussion.

The Bombers on the other hand could regain a couple of big names, with Devon Smith and David Zaharakis both set to be named.

Finally, GWS co-captain Phil Davis could miss his side’s crucial clash with Sydney this weekend, after sustaining an ankle injury during his side’s clash with Fremantle on Saturday.

The injury would prove a big blow for the Giants, with Davis slated to line up on Sydney star Lance Franklin.
