Why should I pick him?

The Pou (probably need a better nickname for a future gun) was a popular name around the fantasy circles in the back part of last season, coming into the St Kilda team and performing very well after some really strong month of VFL form. He came in for 4 games at AFL level, scoring 117, 93, 96 and 119, averaging 106.25 in that span. Unfortunately those 4 games were interrupted through injury and illness. But due to the slow start to the season, he will be cheap for us after only averaging 63.9 from the 13 games last season, with his average dragged down to playing a lot more forward time in the first half of the season.

Coming in at $656k and as a forward, Phillipou will be a popular player, already being selected by 48.4% of coaches at the time of writing. I think that number could be over 50% come Round 1, with the potential upside of Phillipou and midfield role, he is probably 30 points underpriced, but that could be even more if he goes at what he averaged in his last 4 games. He had really good junior numbers, and averaged over 28 disposals in his Under 18 year playing as a midfielder, and the fact we can select him in our forward lines in 2025 is a gift because there isn’t a huge amount of options that can average over 90, but Phillipou has the ability and junior pedigree to do that, and a potential top 6 forward priced at $656k, sign me up!

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

There isn’t much that would deter me from picking Phillipou. The only thing that I would need to see for the final box to tick off before picking him, and the only flag I can think of with him is to make sure he does have that midfield role. Both Brad Crouch and Seb Ross are no longer there, and Jack Macrae comes into to fill that hole, but with St Kilda not having many names that I can see running through there, I expect Phillipou to continue in the midfield role we saw in the back part of the season.

Much like a few of the popular forwards, I think you can’t really go wrong with picking Mattaes Phillipou. I was thinking if I give him Ace or King, but with everything looking good for Phillipou in 2025, and the fact he will be selected by the vast majority of the competition, I think he will be a great selection for our fantasy teams!
