Join me and special guest Jaiden Popowski in the next head to head battle between premium defenders Harry Sheezel and Liam Duggan. We discuss each player in depth and talk about their pros and cons, give our verdict on who we would pick out of the two players, and if we are keen on starting either player in our side.
Harry Sheezel
The Sheez had a fantastic debut season, winning the Michael Barlow Medal along with the Rising Star which led to an average of 97.3 average. Coming into his second season with both Jack Ziebell and Aaron Hall retiring, Sheezel could have another season with an even bigger role if he plays off half back. The question is, will that be where he plays? There has been a lot of talk during the preseason of some more midfield time which could lead to a more midfield/forward role which would likely see his scoring drop slightly. Plus the additions of recruit Zac Fisher who thrived off half back for Carlton at both VFL and AFL in the back half of last season, and draftee Colby McKercher looking like he could also play off half back meaning a change of role could be likely for Sheezel in 2024. A big preseason watch to see his role.
Liam Duggan
Now one of the co-captains for West Coast in 2024, Liam Duggan will take on more responsibility in a rebuilding Eagles side. Much like Sheezel, we don’t know if Duggan is going to play off half back or through the midfield, but I see either role being a positive for him as he can fill pretty much all the stat lines. Another preseason watch, but could be a smoky POD defender pick with both Hurn retiring in defence and Shuey in the midfield, so either role, there is points to be had.
