Why should I pick him?

Jeremy Sharp has made the move from Gold Coast to Fremantle in search of greener pastures after spending the year playing VFL.
Unfortunately for Sharp, he found himself so far down the pecking order in Gold Coast’s midfield that they were attempting to turn him into a half back flanker instead of letting him play his natural wing game.
Even still, Sharp played in Gold Coast’s VFL Flag win and finished the season with an average of 91, including high scores of 156, 118 and 113.

At his best, Sharp is an accumulating outside runner with great forward 50 penetration. His kick to handball ratio is perfect for a strong fantasy game and is exactly what his new team needs.

The Fremantle wing is a place of great opportunity. The way Fremantle move their ball relies on a strong 2 way runner, unfortunately for them they can’t keep the wings they develop.
In recent years, Langdon, Acres and Henry have all had career best seasons on Fremantle’s wing only to fly the coup once their value had increased. In their final seasons on the wing at Fremantle, Ed Langdon averaged 92, Blake Acres averaged 85 and Liam Henry averaged 76. This role is now vacant and has Sharp’s name all over it.

Lastly and possibly the best reason to select Sharp is his price, at $284,000 he is essentially the same price as a first round draft pick with the upside of having an AFL ready body with game experience.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

Sharp spent all last year on the outer at Gold Coast before essentially being delisted. While there are elements of list profile at play it’s hard to look past the fact that they clearly didn’t consider him part of their best 22.
We can only speculate on why else that could be but sometimes a fresh start under a new coach can sort that, sometimes however it doesn’t.

Honestly, there isn’t many reasons not to pick Sharp this year. The biggest red flag will come later in the preseason if he isn’t in Fremantle’s best 22.
While this isn’t likely at this point, Fremantle could look to give existing players time on the wing to develop. Erasmus is a former first round draft pick who plays the wing well in the WAFL along with Conrad Williams who was a Cat B selection.
Former St Kilda Wing Dan McKenzie has also been training with Fremantle in the preseason with hopes of securing a list spot.
Sharp joins these players in the pecking order for that wing role.

The last time Fremantle took an out of favour former first round draft pick from Gold Coast we got an awesome cash cow in Will Brodie. I’m willing to bet we’ll get the same with Jeremy Sharp this year.
The combination of role, job security, potential and age makes him a walk up selection in my team this year.
