Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 10

LET’S DO THIS! Calvin’s Captains is back and our pirate is ready to fire up with some ripper picks.

It’s time for everyone’s favourite article of the week – Calvin’s Captains. Yes… I must admit I have been off my game lately but this week I will be bouncing back. I’m not here today to defend my “Mills at the SCG” comments, but more to lead you to the best possible players to pick this week. At the end of the day, remember… captain selection is your call. I’m just here to steer you in the right direction.

OK.. so let’s take a little time addressing “Is there an issue with Mills at the SCG?”

2021 Away  = avg 119 (10 games) with 9×110+
2021 Home = avg 99 (8 games) with 2×110+

2022 Away = avg 108 (4 games) with scores of 162, 106, 78 and 87
2022 Home = avg 117 (5 games) with scores of 156, 76, 131, 106 and 117

Based on his 2021 stats = YES. There is a significant issues however, this issue seems to be a thing of the past. Conversation over!

Key StatsCal’s Comments
1. Jack Macrae

@ Mars
SAT 1:45pm
One of his favourite opponents who are #6 easiest for MIDsAverages 123 in his last five against the Suns and is coming off 123 and 110. The main CBA guy for the Dogs at the moment.
2. Christian Petracca

@ Marvel
SAT 4:35pm
#3 on form averaging 123 in his last three. Great match-upNorth are #2 easy in the last five and CP is racking it up. Only had 94 on them last year but will dominate these guys.
3. Josh Dunkley

@ Mars
SAT 1:45pm
6x110+ this year and still one of the best going around.83 and 151 on the Suns last year and last week... Serong (126), Acres (113), Brodie (102) and Brayshaw (99) didn't struggle against the Suns.
4. Lachie Neale

@ UTas
SUN 3:20pm
#1 guy in form and meets the #1 easiest team this yearLast year he only had 75 on the Hawks on a day where Lyons (153) and Zorko (132) went nuts. Neale will this time and is coming off 115, 113 and 142.
5. Patrick Cripps

@ Marvel
FRI 7:50pm
Averages 112 in his last four against the SwansScored 120 on the Swans last year and Crippa is going much better now despite his 76 last week.
6. Callum Mills

@ Marvel
FRI 7:50pm
3x130+ in the last four weeks with two over 150.Hates playing at the SCG and not huge fan of Marvel either with 1x100+ in his career 12 games. Won't matter, he's dominating. But the Blues can be tough.
7. Touk Miller

@ Mars
SAT 1:45pm
128, 92, 140 and 111 in his last four and smoking.Dogs are #2 hardest this year and Touk had 110 and 103 on them last year. Anything can happen at Mars. But he match-up is hard.
8. Dayne Zorko

@ UTas
SUN 3:20pm
40% CBAs in the last two weeks for his 112 and 132.Will dominate the easy Hawks like he did last year when he had 132. Weather is Launie is looking cold... but dry!
9. Clayton Oliver

@ Marvel
SAT 1:45pm
His 91 last week v WCE was his lowest in his last fourPrior to last week, Oliver did have 4x110+ in a row. Easy match up again despite only having 94 on the Roos last year.
10. Andrew Brayshaw

@ Optus
SUN 5:20pm
99 and 134 in his last two but this match-up is juicyLast week, the Dogs had 7x110+ against the Pies and Brayshaw mets them aiming for his first ton against them.

    Khamis or Cleary?

      May 18, 2022 at 11:02 pm

Khamis, as i hope if he starts to drop off they’ll give him a go down back.
      Good luck

Don’t think Dunkley should be #3 considering he is spending so much more time forward. His CBAs are down, and is reliant on kicking goals to get a good score. He’s got form on his side, though. Hope he scores well.

Or cripps? Who would you guys trade in?

      • pendles4brownlow

        May 18, 2022 at 9:30 pm

All three are quality picks. Cripps is not quite the value pick he was. Touk has bottomed out and on the way up again, so I would go him.

Have to buy tickets to see you guys. Are you serious? Cal gives the wrong info most of the time. He calls Petracca his Boy LOL and then tells Roy to SHHHHH when he mentoins him. How’s your other boy going Lachie Ash LOL. You guys are taking money off others for nothing. Cal your a f’n Grub. I’ve mentioned a few reasons why in the past. what about last week naming Gawn as a Captain chance. You knew he was going over to the West Injured and yet you told people he was a Captain choice. I had my VC on McCrae and kept his 123 for my Captain even though I had players like Oliver, Gawn, Cripps, Zorko, Steele and say Short to come. Then you say things like games against WCE will be like a blood bath meaning that there will be plenty of high scores against them and that has not been true. WHY because when a team is playing as bad as the Eagles they get a Rev up during the week after the game and I bet there will only be a couple of players score over 100 against them. Calvin its time you give it away and stop lying to others

A little rough DA. You don’t HAVE to go see them. At least there is entertainment value in hearing Cal try to justify his picks. No matter how bad his selections, and they are just HIS opinion, he is right – the final decision lies with us. I think some of the blame lies with the coaches and players. The coaches don’t like Fantasy and move players around, and the players seem to be so damned inconsistent this year.

My only real gripe with the Captains article is that it should return to the old Top 5. Cal can’t really claim to have successfully picked the best Captain when they were eighth on the list because there have been seven higher rated picks. So obviously, number 2 is the VC and number one C. There is a little leeway for not being able to own them all, but taking credit for picking the best Captain who was outside the top 5 is pushing it.

But who cares. These articles are more a bit of football fun, trying to use history to predict the future. Using stats, and sometimes abusing stats (by removing outliers). They need to start talking standard deviations, then everyone might concentrate in Maths class in future. Read it as a bit of fun, make your own decisions, scream FMDT, rage trade, reverse trade, regain some sanity for the final trades, then get back on with it.

Keep doing what you’re doing Calvin. Research is mostly spot on and the interpretation is mostly pretty good. You are certainly more confident than the data allows, but if people take you 100% seriously when you say someone will get 150 then they need to take a reality check. There’s a trade-off between dry, by-the-numbers predictions, and fun, overly-confident exuberance and your brand is the more entertaining. I’ve been watching and reading your work since 2008. Great fun and a highlight of my week.

Great advice Calvin with the exception of Mills. Played back up to 2020, so it’s dard to compare anything there. Last year at Marvel he had an injured 78 and 116. For his 78 he was injury in Q1 (toe) and was subbed off at 3QT. So, as a mid at Marvel he’s had a game he was on 100 pace despite an injury and a 116. Not enough to say much beyond he can go well there.

I will put no weight on the venue for Mills this week. He’ll be my VC ahead of Cripps and Dunkley.

Can afford 2 premo mids. Have 1812k to spend. Already have Neale, Cripps, Touk and Smith. Who should I get to join them? Thinking Petracca and Macrae, but also tossing up Laird, Zorko, Brayshaw

    May 19, 2022 at 10:37 am

Taking on the pirate, here’s my top 10.

    1) Touk Miller
    2) Rory Laird
    3) Clayton Oliver
    4) Andrew Brayshaw
    5) Max Gawn
    6) Lachie Neale
    7) Josh Kelly
    8) Josh Dunkley
    9) Jack Macrae
    10) Christian Petracca

      why touk number one

      • Adzie

        May 19, 2022 at 5:50 pm

These picks were all purely statistically picked with projected scores. Touk came out on top. Biggest things going for him is his average at the ground, and his average during day games is much better than night games.

Rayner to Berry and Stein to Khamis OR
Rayner to Berry and Butters to Cameron

    • pendles4brownlow

      May 19, 2022 at 6:19 pm

Butters to Cameron is probably going to have an immediate positive impact on your score. Butters has dropped that much, he is probably not going to lose too much more cash. The risk is that Khamis may go up in value by more than Butters loses, but if you go with Khamis, I think you will suffer on the scoreboard. In saying this, I suggest the Stein Khamis trade should be the next trade you make, as Stein is going to be little help over the byes.
