I would happily pay some $, just so the Traders are not sponsored by gambling!!!

Same – it’s cringe af and just sends the worst message

Same same – I understand it’s a business, but surely there are other sponsors out there..

You better believe that all the betting companies have done analysis on the overlap between fantasy/supercoach and betting – they will have targeted us through the traders for sure. Disgusting. The AFL has a huge problem. We dont have an offical drinking partner (well actually, Carlton Draught are a major partner…), or an official smoking partner, so why do we need a betting partner?

Agreed, it’s absolutely effed, and Warnie, Roy & Cal should be ashamed for bot pushing back on it. I’ll stop listening all together if it keeps up

              July 9, 2021 at 11:30 am

Agreed: pulling the ear away will send a message.
But so, too, does maintaining the voice which confronts.
This thread is the voice and I add mine to it, knowing that this thread passes the ethical audit of a sports lover being a socially responsible citizen.

The Traders have flirted with this ethical sell-out before and it trades ‘INTEGRITY’ for ‘$’.
Warnie’s other profession is as a Teacher. So we teach the normalising of loving sport and engagement with gambling now, do we?

The gamble does not need to be promoted, but, of course, it needs to be left for individuals to freely chose when as their interests are suited by it. Some of my trades are ‘hail Mary’ gambles – so be it, but not invited by the otherwise responsible commentary of colleagues in this valued forum.

But, as with Brian Smith, who led the thread, I would pay a sub for ensuring the simple sports integrity of the fantasy enthusiast’s space here – I do not want to be a part of the merger with the betting industry and I do not want the social capital in this space which has been built by all of us to be sold out into that ethical deficit.

Perhaps more to come. All the best to your teams this week, Plugger.

how sure are you that they had a choice? this podcast is for the afl website, i’m sure they can have them promote whatever they want if they’re a partner of the competition. i’m sure they (the afl and traders) want to get paid in this covid world.

i just skip this segment on the podcast like i do with basically any paid promotion on other podcasts.

in saying that, i would be all for a patreon type thing so the boys get paid what they deserve.

Yes, agree with the Patreon type of thing.

As for the AFL influence, it could only be by agreement (if the AFL was an ‘influencer’), but suspect the Traders have been offered their own ‘deal’ directly. Perhaps the Traders could offer some transparency? And, yes a blind eye can be turned, and yes, I do that too particularly with social media advertising intrusions, but a blind eye does leave an uncomfortable ethical deficit on occasions – this would be such an occasion for some, a small sample of whom are in the short thread. Keep in mind that many of the clubs have either divested or are intending to divest themselves from gaming income – the AFL is the main one in ethical deficit in this regard. Noe the Traders share in that ethical deficit.

Your idea is a feasible way to square the deficit, I think. So,thanks for the Patreon suggestion. Gets me thinking. Maybe others too. I would be in it, particularly if it avoided promotion of gaming support. The sight could stay basically the same, as the free access is crucial, but some value-adding for Patreon supporters could possibly be imagined. Supporter revenue supporting what is valued from the Traders: win win.

It’s not illegal to gamble nor promote it. We are getting a free podcast which, if I remember correctly, hasn’t had a sponsor before. I watch the Front Bar, sponsored by Carlton Draught, and don’t feel the need to drink myself into oblivion. You should campaign the government if you want change.

It’s a bit unfair to say that because Warney, Roy or Cal being teachers that they shouldn’t do this. I am sure they want to get paid for their work.

          • Plugger

            July 10, 2021 at 12:09 am

You might have missed a significant point – at various stages, slavery was legal, promoting smoking was legal, racism was legal, sexist bullying was legal, supercharging food with addictive and health damaging quantities of sugar is legal, supercharging our fragile atmosphere with greenhouse gases was (and still in significant part is) legal, and so on. The point is not whether something is legal, but whether it is ethical.

We don’t need to campaign governments to get our ethical sensibilities in order – we just determinedly go about doing that ourselves.

Lalala’s suggestion (above) of a patreon like subscription where supporters of the traders optionally directly support the team, was an example of a suggestion about raising sponsorship in a way which also allows the retention of the greates amount of ethical integrity on the dream team talk forum.

I would have thought all of the above comments, from Brian’s through to Lalala’s, were fair comment, particularly as they suggested an ethically more sound alternativ, which took into consideration the traders financial needs or interests.

AFL owns the podcast and makes the decisions, you notice there’s no Sportsbet ads on the DT Website which the guys do own (draftstars is on there tho which is gambling) but the AFL have the deal with Sportsbet and the traders are employees.

Wether gambling is ethically wrong depends on your point of view, millions of people gamble safely and responsibly every day so I believe it is unfair to blame say the traders on you own shortcoming in regards to self control or lack of will power to say no to gambling.

Personally I’d prefer they didn’t have any ads at all but someone needs to pay the guys for there hard work and at the end of the day if we don’t like the ads no one is forcing us to listern.

                July 12, 2021 at 7:19 am

No one in this thread has made the point that gambling is ethically wrong. The point that has repeatedly been made by several contributors in this thread is that promoting the linking of a sports interest to a gambling practice incurs a significant ethical deficit. Can you see the difference? To use your own allusion, millions of people smoke every day, but as an enlightened society we have mostly come to understand that it is fair to push back, ethically and legally, on any efforts to promote smoking. Freedom to use remains, but freedom to promote dose not. We ‘got’ that ethically far earlier than we ‘got’ it, legally, but, in the longer run, our ethics should out-trump what we might currently legally sanction, but which is in debt to our ethics.

The ethical problem is not with gambling or smoking, it is with the pimp.

Also, unless the Traders otherwise transparently disclose the details of their relationship with the AFL, including any claim to lack of legal control over gambling promotion on the podcast, I think you will find the relationship withe the AFL is via a contract to provide a podcast which they produce as the three “CEOs” of The Traders. Their podcast, whichever AFL pay them to provide. In any case, as wins all, whatever the legal prefers on us in any given undertaken in our lives, we each of us retain moral agency and the responsibility that goes with that.

If the AFL ‘obliged, pressured or contractually enforced’ the Traders to promote gambling that would be a big story which I am sure would attract more media interest than we get here on this modest forum of sports enthusiasts.

its cringey af but if they keep losing, they are probably sending the right message. dont gamble. im okay with the boys getting dollars from betting companies, they should get a pay day. theyve been doing this for more than 10 years. hopefully they can find a different advertiser but im not sure thats up to them, surely the afl can find a different one?

AFL fantasy is targeted at children from their early teens and podcasts etc is where kids are comfortable getting their info. Do the people defending open slather gambling advertising defend the targeting of vulnerable young people programming them to see having a punt to be as normal as catching up for lunch?
Now I don’t oppose gambling as such but the way the industry behaves is disgraceful and things like this enable that, they banned advertising junk food to children in a certain way, don’t help with the promotion of something almost certain to be far more damaging.
This is soo next level to your current Degoat utter nonsense, get the mirror for a long hard look fellas, especially noting that with a teacher in the house you really ought to have a better informed position than the average “punter”.

It is the Traders podcast. They produce it and are ethically responsible for it.

The buck starts and stops with them, HERE ( as it does for each of us when our acts or speech impact others) So let the Traders know that: there is no hiding behind AFL skirts.

But, yes, agree with your point ‘Anti-gambling’, the AFL are separately accountable, so, yes again, agree with the alert to use the above link as well.

Who’s better option both been in good form lately, Stringer or De Goey?

    • Plugger

      July 9, 2021 at 11:46 am

      Close call.
De Goey, who I brought in last week, following on whose heels I am bringing in Stringer this week.
The low BE’s make both of them safe enough to cover disaster, and we know both their ceilings similarly excite. I think De Goey is marginally more stable, but its marginal and no sure calls here. If you take Cal’s Scale of Hardness into consideration, Collingwood have a better run deep into the Fantasy finals.

i listened to traders they like Degoat, then stinger, then Kennedy for cheap and reliable. I personally am risking dangers, i know he probably get injured, but i had him at start of year for reason and hes not getting cheaper, and i just cant do degoat or stinger again they are on my never again list.

So per them Degoat ntoe playing tigers too

Not one to whinge much but the fantasy site and app are bad, compared to others (SC and RDT). just reading comments on AFL web site a fantasy article it discusses how they are Bemused that Pat Walker is one of the most traded in players this week even though he plays Monday and is on the 8 man extended bench, fair call. However I can see why because if you use the fantasy app on your phone or on your PC both are showing him as greenlight. When i search players under $200k and select ‘playing’ he shows up so no wonder people selected him. Further is showing both Thomson Dow and Will Kelly as playing and they both are on ext bench. SC & RDT show them correctly as orange lights. No big deal for those of us with the inclination and time to look the teams up but for those relying on the apps and site its loose. That said i guess there’s a lot of work goes into it.

I am actually considering Sam Durham not playing but is named in ext bench and hope will play in next few weeks.

If anyone knows much about Pat Walker please chime in, im thinking if he’s been named for first time he will play, but only guessing.

Speaking of the fantasy app/site. I can only choose three emergencies for some reason. When I click on a player to become my fourth emergency one of my already chosen emergencies looses emergency status. I have contacted AFL fantasy about this and still haven’t had a reply.

        July 10, 2021 at 6:44 am

Select all your emergencies and refresh the page and then select all four of your emergencies again. There is a glitch in the site where it subs from another placed emergency instead of the unplaced emergency. It’s been like that for quite a while

Walker’s VFL fantasy stats are: av 64, ceiling 92. A Tassie boy with a reputation for being cool under pressure with good disposal efficiency, if that is at all relevant. The stats might be useful. I think that average might have been injury effected.
