Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 7

Where do you put the VC and the C? Calvin has you covered.

Welcome back you bloody awesome legends to another edition of Calvin’s Captains.

“CPRRR” – CHIP IN TO HELP

Each week, this article take me approx. 4hrs and attracts up to 15,000 views. What I’m asking for is a little support towards my head shaving project (7th May) to support the Leukemia Foundation. Please donate what you can to support. If every reader donates $2 (or maybe more), then that would be obviously awesome. Thanks heaps – click on the “CPRRR” or the image to help! Thanks again!

THE LOOP HOLE

This is how it works….

  • Select a gun player playing Thursday/Friday night (or an early game) and give them the VC.
  • If that players scores well, put a non-playing player onto your ground and give them the “C”.
  • Make a bench player emergency as well.
  • The non-playing captain will score 0, meaning you VC score will be activated and doubled and the emergency player you selected, will also cover the zero as well. The emergency score will not double.
  • If you don’t like your VC score, simply select a captain as you normal would.

CALVIN’S TOP-10

#1 – Brodie Grundy v Gold Coast

VC OPTION: First game Saturday @ the MCG

The Suns don’t have a ruck. The Burgess/Graham combination have been getting spanked in recent week and last week, Cal Sinclair returned for 110 (54 hitouts) and the week before Jordan Sweet (74) also scored well. Grundy will have a day out again them.

Zac Smith is a chance to play to battle Grundy but it shouldn’t make an difference and doesn’t worry me one bit. He is coming off 124 and 120, and averages 136 in his last three against the Suns.

#2 – Jack Macrae v Richmond

VC OPTION: Friday @ the MCG

The best VC option going around. Macrae is the #2 man based on form and is coming off a huge 159. Last week against the Tigers, Melbourne scored 5×100+ scores and their main midfielders Petracca (137) and Oliver (124) dominated.

Macrae has torched these guys in the past as well with scores of 143, 99 and 190. In his last nine games at the MCG, he carries a lowest score of 106 and your biggest issue here is… how will you take his VC score when he pumps out a massive 150.

#3 – Max Gawn v Kangaroos

Plays: Sunday @ Blundstone Arena (Hobart)

Gawn didn’t play the Roos in 2020 but in 2019 he scored a nice 154 against them. Goldy has been easy to score against this year, ranking as the third easiest this year. Sean Darcy even scored 108 against him last week.

Max scored 107 last week, after scoring 130+ three weeks running. Expect him to be back to his 130’s again.

#4 – Touk Miller v Collingwood

VC OPTION: First game Saturday @ the MCG

I’m sorry – but it is what it is. Touk has been ripping it up and scored 142 last week to average 112 this year. We know Collingwood are the easiest to score on at the moment, as proven by Parish (150), Heppell (142) and Merrett (125) last week. BOOM!

#5 – Clayton Oliver v Kangaroos

Plays: Sunday @ Blundstone Arena (Hobart)

Although he could attract some attention from Kayne Turner, Andrew Brayshaw still scored well with 121 against him. Fremantle hit 5×100+ scores on the Roos last week with Serong (142), Brayshaw (121) and Mundy (113) getting the job done. Oliver has scored 133 and 112 in his last two games against them and is always a great pick each week.

#6 – Jack Steele v Hawthorn

Plays: Saturday @ Marvel Stadium

Win or lose, it doesn’t matter because this guy gets it done. Keays (152) and Laird (106) got around it last week against the Hawks who are the second easiest team for MIDs to score against. Steele had 123 against them last year and they are one of his favourites to play over his career.

#7 – Jack Ziebell v Melbourne

Plays: Sunday @ Blundstone Arena (Hobart)

We must consider it. Ziebell scored 170 last week and has now hit 140 in three of his last four games. His role is ridiculous. Melbourne have kicked more points than goals this year which means there will about 10-12 kick ins and potentially a bonus 30pts he can add on to his score. I’d love to look at him as a VC option, but he plays Sunday. Make no mistake about it, this run will end at some point… but it will be one hell of a ride until it does. Can you afford, not to be on board?

#8 – Zach Merrett v Carlton

Plays: Sunday @ the MCG

Scored a nice 125 on the Pies last week to keep his run of 100+ scores rolling. He might cop a Curnow-Tag though so he does come with some risk this week. He scored 73 (season low) against the Blues last year but based on form alone, you’d think he’d be fine once again.

#9 – Andrew Gaff v Fremantle

Plays: Sunday @ Optus Stadium

Loves playing at home and loves playing in the Big Derby games. He has scored 100, 100 and 134 in the last three against the Dockers and goes for his eighth straight ton against them. Although he wasn’t great last week (93), the Eagles were flogged and he does tick a lot of the boxes in the last game of the round this week.

#10 – Christian Petracca v Kangaroos

Plays: Sunday @ Blundstone Arena (Hobart)

Just keeps getting it done. Ranked #4 on form, Petracca is running hot coming off 137 last week. He scored a season-high 136 on the Roos last year and has hit 100 in his last five games this year. He is beast!

Houston and Parish is a ballsy option but could gain you rank in a big way if it pays off, that’s the kind of trading that wins the car (think Selby getting in Laird and Bont last year when they were underpriced and then went bang).

Macrae is a must have at some point, but Houston and Parish as a duo could arguably outscore those 2. If you already have a couple of good captaincy options and can survive without Macrae for a little while longer then I like option 2.

    Who to get in ?
    1) J.Macrae & Parish
    2) Ziebell & Treloar
    3) Farrar & any player you think is worth it.
Right now I’m thinking going 2 and making Treloar VC and Grundy C.
Getting rid of Dunkley and Tex, but still got Gulden, Jordon on field and Campbell, Harrison & Brockman on bench.
