My Team 2019: Version 2.0

The first week of the JLT Community Series calls for a new My Team post.

AFL Fantasy is here for 2019! The JLT Community Series is here and we’ll be playing with our teams more and more up until that full lockout at 7:50pm AEDT on Friday 22nd March.

All prices can be found by clicking here. Below is how initial prices have been calculated.

  • $12,800,000 salary cap is projected.
  • Players are priced based on their output last season. eg. 2018 average x magic number (approx 7142 for 2019).
  • Players who missed a full season receive a discount of 30% on their 2017 average.
  • Players who have missed two or more seasons received a discount of 35% on their last available average.
  • Players playing less than 10 games receive a 3% discount on each game under 10. eg. Play 5 games in 2016, then they receive a 15% discount. This is applied to the higher of their season average from the last two years.

Don’t forget to read the targets by Pete from on each club where you can also listen to the podcasts and download a printable pdf. Click here to access the articles. If you wish to continue using DT Live’s Drawing Board, click here to access Chad’s masterpiece.

cripps and billings for me just seems the safer option. However macrea and worpel could be the better option but unsure what you might get from worpel

It’s a good team. Similar to my own. You’re issue is you have too much faith in your rooks. Parker and Balta both on the field is the stuff nightmares are made of. Gibbons is also unlikely to play Rd1.

Ideally you find a proper F4 and push Setters back to F5. Everything else looks solid.

I see a lot of mid price madness there Mick. Williams and Roberton are worth the risk but not Smith. He has teased for years and always comes up short, yes I know he is taking a lot of the kickins but there is Laird and Milera back there as well. Crouch will be injured by round 3 and Fyfe might make to round 6. Too much injury risk. McCarthy played well on the weekend and I put him in my team for a few minutes before deciding the risk was too great … he might make to round 2 before getting injured. I don’t know what to say about S. Reid? You can run with a team like this in Fantasy but not RDT.

IMO, this team is a complete mess. Even being very generous and assuming that Crouch, Newman and Williams all become keepers, you’ll still need nine upgrades to get to a completed team. I don’t think Crouch, Newman or Willams will be keepers, so really, that makes twelve.
I don’t have a problem with the Grundy/Goldstein Ruck combo, I think that could be fine.
You have a lot of mid-pricers, and guys with dubious injury histories. The most games Crouch has ever played in a season is 17, that’s just not good enough for RDT, and Zac Williams has never played a full season. In a limited-trade format you need guys who are reliable.
I like Duncan as a POD.
The biggest problem with this team, that I can see, is that you’ve gone for very expensive rookies. The only one I currently have in my team is Setterfield. McCarthy, Walsh, Butters and Hately are all ‘premium-rookies’ and I don’t think they’re worth the extra cash. At the end of the day, they are still rookies, and you can expect bad scores, and all it takes is one score of 30-40 to completely stop their cash generation. Whereas if you go for a guy like Constable or maybe a Will Hayes or someone, even if they do score a 40, it shouldn’t bottleneck their cash generation too much. Walsh is going to need to outscore someone like a Constable by 20-25 points to be worth the extra cash, and I don’t think he is. I would suggest dropping Walsh to Constable, Hately to Will Hayes, maybe drop McCarthy for Willem Drew, get in those guys that are basement-priced, because they will generate more cash.

Also, I’m not sure why you have Reid in there. Get him out. He won’t score enough to be a premo and there are WAAAAY better cash cows. Hopefully all this has been helpful. You don’t have to take my advice, but I hope you at least consider it. Cheers.

Jakes advice is don’t touch non premiums, or premium rookies, and only buy guys who are full price or at rock bottom,

And I thought you had half a brain on you…..

Well thanks for all of your advice, after writing this I played around with it before bed and looking at it this morning it is a different team. Fyfe gone for Oliver and Reid gone for Cameron. As far as the other advice about the rookies well only when the teams are announced will we see just who is right or wrong. Constable will be lucky to get a game once the Cats go to full strength and if he does his score will be alot lower, not having Walsh is too stupid to even discuss and as for having Williams, B.Smith they don’t have to play a full season just about 12-15 games to get max money out of them. B.Crouch is a risk as he is injury prone, but you have to take risks to get ahead of the pack. My team will change about a million times before lock out so to Jake I would like to see your team before you call mine a complete mess.I imagine yours is completely vanilla as you sit in the middle of the pack all year, I personally play for the fun with my friends and love to take risks just for the joy if they pay up….

            March 6, 2019 at 2:30 pm

Fair enough Mick. Since you’re curious, this is my RDT team as it currently stands.

            Team Name: The Harlequins
            Cash Left: $57,100

            Def: R.Laird, J.Lloyd, L.Whitfield, A.Witherden, J.Clark, J.Scrimshaw (C.Burgess, M.Hore)

            Mid: J.Macrae, S.Coniglio, P.Cripps, A.Treloar, R.Sloane, C.Constable, B.Scott, W.Hayes (B.Bewley, N.Hind, M.Gibbons)

            Ruc: B.Grundy, Z.Clarke (A.Smith)

            Fwd: P.Dangerfield, S.Menegola, T.Boak, T.Greene, W.Setterfield, M.Parker (W.Drew, N.Balta)

I’m fairly happy with it. The rucks are weak, but I have a couple of plans on other starting combos that might work. My premos are weighted towards the later bye rounds, so that I can upgrade through the byes, and I only need 8 upgrades to get to a completed team, which is very achievable with 30 trades. Ultimately I think it all comes down to which rookies are playing, but I think a lot of these guys are decent chances to debut.

          • Avatar

            March 11, 2019 at 7:05 pm

I have to disagree with your above comments Jake. If you don’t have B.Crouch in your team then you really are at a serious disadvantage. Capable of scoring the same as anyone 300k higher in price and allows for money spent elsewhere. There is a lot of mid prices and a real lack of basement rookies this year. I would be taking full advantage of Libba, Crouch, Williams, etc.

you have 3 mid rookies who may all potentially miss round 1. I presume constable the only real chance. I cant see zack clake playing round 1 so you may have to have to find at least another 200k upgrade there and Parker scored about 4 points in 3 quaters on the weekend.

If you have a problem with the reliability of Crouch then Im not sure why u have Toby Greene. I would say Crouch more likely to get a string of games than Greene.

Similar to mine loch while also with certain differences,
I’m also running the same Midfield besides the M2, I cant trust English with the responsibility to pump out a 70 at a minimum, not sure if he’s worth it, also I’d be scared for Tim kelly’s Role now, just doesn’t seem to be playing that intensive pressure player like last season,
Love your forward pod tho, great pick. ;) I’ve lost a bit of faith in my own team of Sydney, Lloyd might not be worth the coin this season imo, definitely a watch this weekend

I think this is too strong in the Mids:

Macrae, Cogs, Cripps, Brayshaw, Taranto, B Crouch, Libba, Walsh (Constable, Bewdy).

It means that the FWD structure becomes:

Danger, Heeney, Setterfield, rookie, rookie, rookie (rookie, rookie).

I’d only brought Macrae in after JLT (#staystrong) but had been rocking with most of the rest. If Macrae becomes and upgrade target, then FWDs become pretty good, and there’s $200K to spend elsewhere.

    Thoughts please.

Very similar to mine fooz, tho I lack Macrae and cogs, I’m not completely opposed to having only 2 premium forwards but you’d need to have a McCarthy and maybe anyone premium rookie on field to compensate,

Don’t want 3 170k rookies playing on the field in your fwd line and all getting dropped after 1-2 rounds, that’ll just kill your whole plan, need to have some extra cash on field or in the bank imo

I don’t mind it. Mid is pretty good, ruck is perfect, forward line is strong. Defence maybe a little weak, but D1-D3 is fine and I can’t see you strengthening it without weakening another line. I actually like the defensive rookies more than the forward rookies anyway.
