The Bone of my Contention

The words Roy famously quotes when discussing the likes of Greg Broughton, Shaun Higgins and alike. These guys are the reason the term FMDT exists. Surprisingly some of these guys are amongst the top DT performers in their positions yet they have at different stages and for varied reasons been the Bones of our contentions.

Here are the individual summaries of why I have selected this side as it stands.

Heath Scotland: Heath Scotland? The second best performing defender in the game. Mr Consistency! Heath makes the team (at no fault of his own) because of the flawed prediction of a 3 week injury which saw him return for consecutive hundreds after missing one week. If you traded him…. He would be the bone of your contention.

Grant Birchall: If you were a Birch owner at the start of the season you would no doubt remember Birch being named on the field round 4 and 5 and only to be a late withdrawal in consecutive weeks.

Beau Waters: This one hurts me. He has twice the powers of recovery that Heath Scotland does. 6 weeks! Psshh

Greg Broughton: Captain of my side from his display last year and hasn’t he lead by example. After 2 weeks he averaged 63 and was the bone of contention for many and one of the most traded out players. The next 9 weeks he averaged 92 and once again was the bone of contention for those who sold him (pretty sure he even came into Chook’s Captain calculations). From that time onward he proceeded to piss off everyone else who didn’t sell him by averaging 56 culminating in a vest effected 36 and a week off alongside popular defenders Clarke, Hargrave, Darley and Sam Shaw.

Heath Shaw: The Heath Shaw Headache. I certainly had one when he decided to have a few weeks off with injuries over the Multi Bye rounds. What Heath has done well this year is take just enough time off to have you stressing out about whether or not to keep him. At least this year with the Heath Shaw rule (reverse trades) it has been a little less stressful.

Andrew Carrazzo: 106, 98, 90… nek minnit 1.

Ryan Hargrave: A summary of Hargraves season in 2 rounds. A hero in round 4 after a 48 point last quarter (probably a 35 point last 3 minutes) taking him to a game high 111. Missed the following week vs GWS…

Scott Pendelbury: Popular Captain choice vs Gold Coast…on track for a big score… subbed off at half time and not to be seen again for weeks.

Mark Murphy: Averages 120 until Calvin trades him in. 3 sub 100 scores followed by an injury. Ouch.

James Magner: After 2 rounds we were thinking Michael Barlow. From then on he was tagging our gun midfielders.

Kyal Horsley: Another that was drawing Barlow comparisons. Averaged 54 in his last 5 games played

Gary Ablett: Did you keep him? I didn’t

Thomas Couch: Has shown what he can do when given an opportunity. He was in a lot of starting teams. Too little too late

Matthew Luenberger: Could be heaps of Rucks included here. He was supposed to be ‘set and forget’ didn’t quite work out.

Aaron Sandilands: See Luenberger

Dustin Martin: “Oh we’re from Tigerland… A fighting fury We’re from Tigerland… In any weather you will see us with a grin, Taking Pills and Sleeping In”

Nathan Fyfe: Probably the first nomination for the team this year. For those who held him through his one week break would have been happy after his 91 points vs Carlton despite the $37,700 price drop. They would have been a little less impressed after he injured the shoulder again at training and has been out ever since.

Allen Christiensen: Popular pick as an upgrade after 2 consecutive hundreds. Averaged sub 70 since with vests and an injury spell too.

Adam Goodes: People who buy Adam Goodes do so knowing he is good for 20 plus games. Not this year

Alan Didak: This ones personal. I went Christensen to Didak. He marks inside 50 within minutes. What a great trade. Twang…. 6 points.

Travis Cloke: Im a pies supporter so Trav gets in out of disrespect for the club! Im questioning wether I even want him to sign. The ones who would most like him to sign his contract are his DT coaches!

Dayne Zorko- Similar to Tom Couch. I know a lot of people chasing Kennedys hundred from round one brought in Couch or Zorko as a non scoring player to facilitate this. They should be in soon right. FMDT!

It makes me wonder why I play this game! I have had 16 of the 22 players listed and I know there are other players out there I have missed. The positive is that somehow you can come across these hurdles and come out the end in a decent position (currently ranked 147th)

So who would be captain of your side? Let us know your disaster stories as venting it may make you (and the rest of us) feel a lot better.

Who else should make it into the side? Failed Premos? Unique Rookies?

Have your say in the comments and vote for your captain!

Hand out your life time bans! #FMDT

Well written. Broughton goes onto the never again list with Sylvia and Higgins. Some times you just have to put your foot down. My only happy tale is that I didn’t trade Scotland.

The never again list needs to be renamed the Greg Broughton list

or the Ryan Hargrave list either do just fine

Yes, claim that name. Instead of the Bucket List, we have the Broughton List.

just because he recovered quickly and you were impatient and traded him out…

Durability has always been an issue throughout his career, and then the one time he looks like he’s finally over all his elbow problems, getting hit by taxis and swallowing goldfish BAM! Arthroscopy, no warning nothing see ya.

Add to this the fact he was the perferct fit for my bye structure in that i was able to bring him in in R12 and was still very reasonably priced i got 3 good games out of him.

Yes i was trigger happy and traded him out, but my hand was forced with two backline donuts and the prospect of 5 weeks on the sidelines and league wins being a must to secure a final 8 berth, so I don’t really feel burned about him coming back early.

I’d do it again under the same circumstances.

I Still think Waters on your never list is stupid.

He was a cheap pick up at the start of the year and has done us proud. Apart from WCE club playing mind games he has only missed a few games. We should have learned our lesson with Scottland and not traded him so soon.

I would happily pick Waters next year he has been a top 3 backman this year when pickings are slim, he will always be injury prone due to his hardness but that is the same as Joel Selwood.

Also with Shannon Hurn getting the tag in the backline Waters ability to mark and his Kick to Handball ratio he is almost a must have!

            IMO of course.

Also i am upset that Goddard did not make this list. He will not start in my team next year just like this year! I will not trade him in until i see at least 4-5 weeks of consistence!

I have or have had 12 off your listing. would like to add:

Spurr – picked after 2 rounds and then dropped – had tro hold him through the season until he mysteriously appeared…in place of Broughton (another in my team)

Crozier – another bubble boy – got sick

Hall – Sucked us all in – he plays occasionally so we keep him, and gets the usualy sub 30 solid points

    Sexton – Another downgrade disaster

Possibly the best is Tommy Walsh: +85 then -3, and never to be seen again. He would make a great captain, scoring -6 in his last game !!!

    Great article.

Feeling your pain on the Christensen > Didak trade. To make matters worse, Zorko turned out to be a perfectly serviceable F7 anyway so the whole exercise was even more pointless.

Nice Article I have 12 of them.

    Another person to add, Ryder.

Traded Giles to Ryder, got one score out of him then he decided to hurt his calf.
Traded Ryder to Maric and he is a late withdrawal against the suns.

So far, life time bans go to just Broughton and Cloke…at this stage.

i had to choose from williams or elliot as a downgrade… sadly i went williams… he is a dead spot on my bench…

he also has the great sexton as company as well…

    2 rooks i wish i didnt get…

has hurt my team and score… especially with so many premos getting injured..

i did however hold onto waters/gazza… so i am happy about that.

also other players i would never touch again in 2013 will be:
      big o

if you look at it all and did a stats sheet..
i wouldnt be surprised people burning almost half their trades on injured players or dead weight players.

Bloody kreuzer you hack!!! Did the unthinkable and sideways traded hale to get him in before the round 3 pricerise after he was averaging 95ish after the first two games and didn’t want to miss the kreuzer boat… problem is it he was more like a deepsea submarine, just when you think he couldn’t possibly sink to any deeper depths good ol kreuzer the loser manages to.

Corey Enright’s getting off far too lightly in these types of articles. Averages in the 90s for th elast two years, and proven premos were needed even more in defeence this year with Gibbs being moved.
So what does he do, with the same coach, no injuries, playing the exact same role as he always has? Stinks it up. By Rd 11 he was averaging 72, dropped $85K and had ONE ton.
A guy who cost $456K, is still barely averaging 80 now after a decent few weeks.

lol oh you just reminded me of gibbs! Don’t even get me started on him. Atleast he’s shown something though as a number 1 draftpick (until this year where he was tipped to finally have his breakout season). As for kreuzer he would have made a great lap dancer that sends you home with a bone even a dog couldn’t chew. If anyone can tell me a number 1 draft pick in recent memory that has done so very little I’d love to know.

How does GAJ get a mention and not Swan?! And Zorko? He was never a late out, he didnt let anyone down, was never going to play in the first few rounds due to preseason injuries. What about Treloar in that case? His name should never be on this list!

Enright and BJ should be on this list. Oh well nice effort

How did Brendan Godtard not make this team? He is surely more worthy than Carrazzo, whose injury wasn’t his fault and has been ultra consistent in all of his games he’s played not counting the one in which he was injured.

He was also a fantasticly timed Backline upgrade to boot!

Also rough to miss was Nick Malsexy and Duffman – both looked great pre-season at very tempting prices then a few rounds into the season decide they can’t remember how to play good enough football to even warrant a spot in their respective sides, let alone be DT relevant.

Also, I can’t stand by and let a bad word be said about my boy Zorko. For one he has a great name that allows many fabulous puns, and like Carrots above was a perfectly timed mid-season downgrade, not to mention he has scored like a premium since he first managed to avoid the reptile!! (except his 69 & 71 but for a rookie i’ll still accept those scores)

Other than that spot on and a great read!! Sadly I have been touched by way too many of the players on this list so pardon my tone of utter exasperation!!

also Conca! I had him and apart from vest round 1 he was looking the goods! then after a 130+ score… went to crap and had to be traded.

I think Carrots saved all of us that chose Scottland over him, we got to pick him up at a bargin price :)

I know some people did chase him for Kennedy’s score but that’s their own fault. You must have no idea if you trade in a rook that isn’t named yet.

I thought Birchall was a little stiff to get on the list too, although his mystery disappearance and consequent week off was a little off-putting. has been pretty consistent when on the park though.

Awesome article, I’ve had 13 players from this team at some point, traded in Carrots at the perfect time to add a single point to my team then leave…

Why are you using “bone of contention” though, shouldn’t it be “bane of existence”, or a mix of the two? Unless I’m getting the meaning of mixed metaphor completely wrong.

Is it worth bringing in Couch for Williams now with only 2 trades left. Could do with the DPP come finals time, just worried that he may stop getting games soon? Then again, Williams is just sitting there on the bench as deadwood anyway isn’t he? Think I just answered my own question, lol
