DT2011: How will it work?

DT next year will not be as we know it. We will be dealing with a 17th team and the subsequent bye. Today we’ve got a bit of an insight into what AFL Dream Team will look like in 2011.

One of our mates, makingmemark (who is battling it out with Calvin and myself in our Cash League) attended the Digital Sports Summit today at the MCG. Peter Jankulovski from Vapor Media (Virtual Sports) spoke about Fantasy Sports in Australia and gave a hint that there would be maybe more trades and emergencies next year to deal with the inclusion of Gold Coast.

Their approach would be a “less is more”, but it is still yet to be decided.

This will be interesting as the AFL have also come out and confirmed that each club will have 2 byes over a 24 week roster, but its make up is yet to be determined.

Two possible solutions are:

  • Season of 22 weeks with a standard eight matches, with one team having a bye for each of those 22 rounds, along with one round where five matches are played with seven teams having byes and one round where six matches are played with five teams having byes.
  • Season under a model whereby we play 19 rounds of eight matches per week, and then five rounds of seven matches per week where three teams have a bye each week for those rounds.

The first option would mean we would have less disruption to Dream Team where only 2 rounds are ‘screwed up’ with more than one bye. The second option would mean we’d have 3 byes per week of 5 weeks. Obviously these would be randomly put in there at different times in the season, so how those will work – for league games especially – would need to be thought about? Maybe ‘rankings’ would still happen, but it could possibly be a ‘bye’ week for Dream Team coaches in League games?

Time will tell.

whatever happens with dreamteam next year we have to remember it will affect all of us equally.
I persoanlly think that dreamteam should remain at 16 team leagues until GWS enters then up it to 18. There is no need for DTers to have a bye.

I like that idea, just kick out a team that no one gets players from!!

he doesn’t mean that! He means the leagues you are in. Nothing to do with players

Yeah Dyl I dont think there is a need for Dters to have byes..

Also heres an idea, a bit hard to explain:

Say if you have 5 players in your team from Geelong who have a bye.. And your score at the end of the round is 1700 from 17 players (not including captain), the average is 100 each so an extra 500 (5 x 100) gets added to the score + whatever your captain scored..

    Does that seem reasonable?

    Maybe add:
    – that you can only have a maximum of say 5 players that can get averaged

thats a great idea…although however there could be a loophole for weekly prize hackers,as they could put 5 rookies from the same team that have a bye that week to save some money. And then they get points out of players that wouldnt have even scored..

I think to solve this solution maybe you could just use the averages of the players that have the bye..e.g ablett has a bye he get his 124 point average added onto the total..also bye players cannot be made captains a definite averages could be exploited

Comment some ideas you have to improve this, cheers

I personally have always liked this idea (it has been suggested a few times.) Unfortunately there are some complications that come with it.

      1. If Gablett scores 180 in round 1 and has a bye in round 2 that is extrememly unfair.
      2. They will have to determine whether the player is not playing because of injury (would the player have played if he didn’t have the bye?). If no you shouldn’t get the average. I doubt they wil be able to keep on top of this.
      3. If a player gets injured in round 1 (scores 10) and has the bye in round 2 (would have played if there wasn’t a bye) you will unfairly cop the score of 10.

Averages wont work – what do rookies score? If you give them all the same score that just rewards people who make shit picks.

4 extra bench slots and a 4th emergency to cover all positions and leave the rest up to selection of a balanced team.

We all get the draw for the season in advance, so make your selections around that. and leave it at 20 trades. You may not score as well, but it would sort out the decent players from the Nuffs

Nice work Patto, i didnt look into it that much! It does create a bit of a problem then.. but surely there would be a few tweaks to it to make it work…

Perhaps using the ‘magic number’, the score they receive is based on their price (effectively removing skewed averages and rookie loopholes)..

say the magic number is 4000 and you have a player worth 400k and a rookie 77k that miss out due to the bye…

the score you receive for them are 100 and 19 respectively..

it does seem unfair to the rookie (who could be like barlow with 120+ in forst two games), but that should be where you have decent bench cover! starting a rookie on the field is risky in the first place anyway

just a thought…maybe build on it? if this doesnt work then im all for the temporary substitutions

In my opinion, fuck it. Selecting your team based on the AFL playing roster should be an added complexity that seperates the men from the boys. Guys who use their brains when selecting their team get burnt less than some monkey who picks half the Geelong or St Kilda playing list, which is fair.

A couple of extra trades, or emergency slots on the bench, is enough to get past the problem. KISS etc.

Yep. I’m the same. Keeping it simple is the key. 95% of people just play for the fun of it. More trades makes it more fun (or the added emergency options would do that too).

Those that take the game seriously will need to think about how to select their teams to maximise points for the year. I think it would be a great challenge.

24 rounds, 24 trades. 3 def, 3 mid, 1 ruck, 3 forwards on bench, so now a squad of 32.

yes..its important to have rookies that will cover your champs wen they got the bye

Definetly more trades and emergencies would be handy but also maybe a bigger salary cap?. We can have a gun or a mid price gun sitting on our pine in each position incase lets say Montagna has a bye you can just swap them over?. Also stops everyone just getting all geelong and st kilda players. I dunno, everyone has there own ideas i guess, gonna be interesting to see what actually happens…

We wouldnt have to talk about all this stuff if GWS just got their asses together and came in next year too!…haha. Its gonna be a year of getting use to the ‘new’ system and when they come back in its back to normal….sigh

    This is what I think…
If we have a player who is having a bye, we should be able to take there average but not set them as captain.
Also I think we should have 24 trades for 24 rounds.
They should be the only changes. I would keep the 30 man squads and 16 teams.
Dream team is a great game and you don’t want to change it to much.

What happens if you have say 20 normal trades and then say ___ suplementry trades
so you use you 20 normal trades normally,
but say Collinwood has the bye and you have Dane Swan, you can use a suplementry trade for someone of Less or equal value BUT you dont gain or lose any money. and that player only stays in your team for the week that you suplemented Swan for.

    So basically
    Collingwood have bye
Use 1 supplement trade Swan – Ablett (dosnt effect your bank)
ablett plays in your team for a week
Collinwood play next week you get swan back and lose ablett

This is definatly the best idea so far… and if they cannot figuire out a better way then this is the way they should go….
the other way where u have extra emergencies and whatever wouldnt be as good because in the season losing a game the disadvantage isnt that bad but come finals your not going to want to have ablett or swan and ad not be able to replace them with somebody just as good!

Awesome solution. Adds fun as you can do trading every week that dont count!

Could be the best season of DT ever.

Keep it 16 teams to a league.

      24 trades 24 rounds.

Why not have a pre-season cup in rounds 1-4 similar to the “losers” finals. Doesnt mean anything, but again adds a bit of fun as rounds 1-4 are a bit sorta wasted.

The Supplementary Trade sounds like an interesting idea, but then you could perhaps have less cluey people trading someone out permanently, only to find next week they just subbed the guy out for a week, and the player is no longer within financial reach, (or heaven forbid, attempting to sub a keeper, and trading him instead :O).

For the most part though, it appears to be a pretty easy and effective solution.

  10. Avatar

    July 7, 2010 at 11:22 pm

And also how many supplementary trades do you get?

Is the maximum to be used each week?

    How many?

Another name for it could be Temporary Free Agency :D

Oh oh oh……. Free Agent Trade.

You guys are really onto something here.

These sort of forums is how a lot of good ideas are formulated and then implemented.

FREE AGENT TRADE – you can temporarily trade any player whose team has the bye that week for a player of equal or lesser value. Trades should not be limited. If you have 15 players in your squad that have the bye somehow then you should get to trade them (temporarily) out for the week.

        July 9, 2010 at 5:40 pm

yes! unlimited supp trades but can only have a max of 5 or 6 players from each team in your squad.

if you have 4 players with a bye, do you have for example $1.2 mil to spend on 4 tempory players OR have to swap 1 player at a time??

    • Avatar

      July 8, 2010 at 10:39 am

Unlimited I reckon. 20 normal trades though. I hope they go with this idea, will certianly add another dimension to DT. I think I’ve heard it suggested before….hopefully VS already know about it.

    July 8, 2010 at 12:49 pm

have to make sure somehow that only bye players can be subbed, and also what if an injured player has a bye, it gives a 1 week loophole for not having cover. doesnt seem to reward quality bench picking at the start of the year

  12. Avatar

    July 8, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I can see a few problems if the AFL were to give you the players average as their score when they have they bye.

As Patto said before, Ablett could score you 180 round 1, and if Geelong have the bye round 2, you could put him as capt with no risk and take 360 points.

Personally I like what Warnie said, have 3 back, mid and fwd emg, and just the 1 ruck. Im not too sure whether the extra trades are needed but it could still work.

Something that is annoying is that with only 24 rounds and 2 byes per team, we will see multiple teams having byes each week. That is something that needs to be addressed for DT as it means you could cop a truck load of donuts.

1.Dont let gold coast play next year…
2.bring them in the following year with gws.
3.make the fixture with no byes!

the afl should think of the remefaction on dream team(after all thats whats importnat) instead of the 3 expansion and extra money they will make! lol

There have been some good suggestions on here – I particularly like the one about supplementary players. The only problem with this I think is that VS want to keep the game simple and I think if everyone had to monitor their teams very closely every week to trade out players then it risks turning away all of your average Joe DT’ers who will look at their team every now and then. I mean it is a great idea for everyone on here who is really into it but I think VS are looking to capture a much wider audience than just the DT addicts. Would love to see it implemented though as trading is half the fun of the game.

I also do the NRL Fantasy League on and in there one they have Byes when Origin is on and they give you 24 or 26 trades plus when a certain amount of teams are on Byes there are No League Matches but you still score points for your team which means you can always go up in the Overall Rankings but in certain rounds when only 2 teams have byes League Matches on.

So when they have only 2 teams Byes in AFL they include League Matchups

I recommend they give us at least 24 or 26 trades like the NRL does due to Byes for teams

    Thats just my view

As it stands most of our bench are cheap rookies.

I think increasing the salary cap to allow us the option of having quality players on the bench to cover for the byes.

    Increase trades to 24
