Shags’ Watchlist

Toby Nankervis (Ruck/Fwd $238,000 AF $277,100 DT) is probably too expensive for many to grab as a ruck, however with so much carnage its not a terrible strategy to downgrade a Nic Nat or Tippett to him over the byes and upgrade one of your other ruck rookies after their byes, or even after the bye rounds, especially if the ruck you really want doesnt fit your bye structure but Nankervis does.

Shags’ Watchlist

With rookies drying up, new debuts like Matthew Kennedy (Mid $183,000 AF $170,800 DT) Kennedy has been in outstanding form in the NEAFL in 2016, and is coming off 26 possessions and three goals in the reserves’ tight win over the Sydney Swans last week. Some may want to jump on board of the bat.

Shags’ Watchlist

Sam Mitchell (Mid $463,000 be 97 AF $ 461,200 be 72 DT) was looking must have at the start of the year, but then had an absolute shocking fall from grace. He scored 109 in his last outing but was a late out last week. Personally I’d like to see another solid output before considering, but he is super cheap and a proven gun, if he helps fix your bye structure he might be worth a punt that he will be back to his best.

Shags’ Watchlist

There are 2 reasons I am watchlisting Stephan Martin (Ruck $392,000 be 106 AF $ 392,100 be 86 DT) this week. Trent West is out making some belief his output may improve, so owners who were looking to offload may hold to see. And with so much ruck carnage, some looking for a cheap upgrade may actually consider a super cheap Stef on a punt.

Shags’ Watchlist

With not many rookie options, If you dont already have him you may want to jump on Darcy Tucker (Def $242,000 be -3 AF $222,100 be -36) after a stint on the sidelines has just started warming up with a 74 and 94. The kid looks a gun and if you dont already have him it could be a good option even at an inflated price.

Shags’ Watchlist

Patrick Dangerfield (Mid $610,000 be 77 AF $ 637,400 be 76 DT). Captain Obvious. 187. (Deja vu). Get him in!

  • Leuenberger gonna fire up against Tom Downie this week yeah boy…
Also Lycett out for missing a team meeting hahaha.

  • Small step in the right direction by the Lions in dropping West, but seriously, what more does Mr Mathieson need to do to get another gig. He didn’t even deserve to be dropped in the first place, was more so his Captain returning from yet another injury forced him out.

    • yeah, i don’t reckon jansen has been miles better to justify his continued selection compared to what happened to rhys…but i’m biased cause mathieson is sitting on my bench…

  • I imagine many have real probs facing the byes. For myself it’s AOK except Mathieson’s omission.

  • No Trent West! Stef Martin survives another week

  • A Mumford injury- just true to form on previous seasons.
How will Stef Martin go against West Coast with both their main rucks out? (Last chance to actually do something, Stef.)

  • NB all- Matthew Kennedy is a MID in AF, not a FWD, as stated in the post above.

  • Thoughts on Wagner’s job security? He is covering for 3 separate short-term injuries currently, so that kinda bodes poorly I wouldve thought..

  • Sigh. No Mathieson. I cant justify a non playing rookie over the byes, So I will be looking to offload him this week.

His replacement will always have a chance to bust out a top 18 score.

Byes are a very different game. I reckon a double downgrade ensuring an extra player is on field is greater than upgrading to a premium and having 1 less. Especially if the extra player is over weeks.

    • +1. If Mathieson isn’t back by now I doubt we’ll see him again any time soon. Got a felling Leppa just doesn’t like the way he goes about things. Glad I dodged that rook bullett.

Great score btw last week Shags. Thought I was top scorer in our DT Talk league but then I saw your score and couldn’t believe it, considering how you’ve been traveling lately. Where did you pull that one from? Maybe things are turning around for you!

      • Thanks mate!

Been slow burning on the upgrades and removing dead wood before the byes. Was pretty lucky though as I was forced to play BenKen as a cover for Hall who being in the Monday game wasnt even 100% to make the side with extended benches…and he belted out a 113!

Fluked all the right rookies on the field (For once) and had both Rocky and Danger.

  • M. Kennedy worth bringing in this week?

  • Trade McCarthy or Mathieson to Sam Reid?

McCarthy is scoring rubbish and bleeding cash while Mathieson is omitted again but can still score well when named.

    • Scoring rubbish is ok if you have more than 18 players on field, and if he actually goes ok his score might get top 18.

Mathieson scoring a zero wont help you.

    • Mathieson, you need players playing, McCarthy is not worth trading at this point

  • Can anyone give me any info on Rose? Job security at Swans etc Scoring well, but is he playing well?

    • A lot of people have avoided Rose because they are concerned with his JS. People also missed out maybe the best time to grab him because he was a late inclusion. Tad pricey for the risk IMO.

  • Austin, wagner or reid to trade in this week?

    • Reid and Austin have the Bye next week, meaning they would be good targets after their bye in round 15. In some ways its a waste getting them now unless it really suits your bye structure.
Wagner has the bye round 15 which is a bit more awkward unless it really suits your bye structure.

I think bye rounds starting next week are good for double downgrades if the downgrades suit the structure (eg, traded next week and are round 13 bye players) as if gives you extra rolls of the dice, and you get the best rookie scores. Your best rookies often score similarly to your lower premiums, so its not necessarily that much of a gain doing an upgrade.

How is the rest of your team? Have you culled any deadwood (Injuries, non playing rookies).

      • Reid and Wagner both have a round 15 bye Shags?? Or am I missing something…

        • Nah, I got it wrong. Sam J. Reid does have bye round 15. I kinda only quickly looked up the name Sam Reid…and as there is ANOTHER Sam Reid I got it wrong lol.

        • Wagner has a round 14 bye I think.

          • Cory Wagner from North has round 15 Bye…Not to be confused with Josh Wagner from dees with round 14 bye…Too many players with similar names lol making us all confused.

          • Sorry I thought you were talking about Josh. Agree too many players with the same bloody name does get confusing.

  • Is anyone else finding it hard to find two trades with these byes coming up?
I’m thinking McCarthy to S.J.Reid for the cash, and because Reid will probably score better anyway. But I’m not sure on the other trade. Depends on the Sunday teams. Maybe Keays to someone else, because he is costing me money as well.

    • Yeah these first round of trades are terrible. Mathieson to Reid and Smith to Simpson. Leaves me with 20 playing this week. Here’s hoping there is no carnage in the next two weeks!

      • Best thing to do is sure up your Bye structure if its not quite right, and cull and dead wood (eg Mathieson).

After that, if you have lots of players on your field, I actually think a double downgrade is ok, and dont avoid slightly more expensive rookies with OK job security.

  • My rucks are Gawn, Jacobs, cox and Currie

Is it worth cashing in on Currie or is he due back soon

    • Injury wise He should be right to play after his bye. Saying that, that doesnt mean he will be named over Nicholls.

On the otherhand, Cox looked sore in his last game and I wouldnt be shocked if he wasnt named after his bye.

      Dilemmas Dilemmas hey.

  • I got 21 playing this weeks so I’m trading Mathieson to Reid then mills to either laird, docherty or Simpson who is the best bet out of those 3

    • Why not go for 22 on field this week, and save the trade up for Laird/Docherty/Simmo after their bye next week?

That means you end up with 1 extra player playing on field over the byes.

      • it might screw me for round 15,
        My team this week
shaw Williams yeo Collins tucker suckling bench smith laird(mills)

macrae reid(matheison) hopper hunter rockliff rich Duncan blakely bench stevens ablett

        gawn martin bench s.frost s.micheal

petracca walters hams kerridge Campbell wells bench martin hall

        what do you think?

        • If you need to fix up your bye round structure because its a bit stuffed do it. You have to aim to have 18 on field at the very least each bye.

If you really want me to do a bye round analysis of your team, could you name which byes each player has thanks.

          • I got 6, 11 ,13

          • yeah, that 6 at the start is a ball breaker. You need to make that 8. Playing players on bench over byes are such a waste. Try to make that 13 to 11. I think 8 11 11 is perfect structure.

What makes this tricky is you are trading in players who are not playing this week.

Also its not truly a 6, as you have Mathieson. You can always save Mathieson for next week, as you never know he may get named.

  • thanks
at least ill get a good score this week

  • great article shags
    quick question
    Corey Wagner
    Matthew Kennedy

  • Is there any round 13 bye defenders that may get a game soon ?

  • Mathieson to Reid
    Lonergan to Rocky

  • Does Kade Stewart gave pretty good js now that he wasn’t dropped for Sam Mitchell? Considering going Mathieson -> him or is there better downgrade options ?

  • Going to go Papley to hams and Menadue ( finally ) to S.Reid, gives me a warchest of 250k to upgrade some Rd 14 players next week to guys who have the bye this week. Someone like Ablett would slot into my team quite nicely

  • thoughts on NAISMITH getting up?
