I had a chat with fellow Launceston boy Jackson Thurlow on how he has settled in at Geelong since being taken at number sixteen in the 2012 draft.
Jacko is a great kid who has been playing senior footy in the Tasmania State League and is ready to go. Priced at $116,200, the defender is ticking all of the boxes to get some game time this year.
Here are a few questions I threw at him…
How has the pre-season been since getting drafted?
Pre season is going well and I’m loving the Geelong life. I couldn’t have gone to a better club, the people are unreal also it’s so close to the beach.
There were big wraps on your game in the practice match against North Melbourne last month; what role were you playing?
Yeah, I got a few kicks here and there but it was nothing over the top. It’s good to get positive feedback about how your going. I was playing across half back.
Last weekend you played your first official game for the club in the NAB Cup against West Coast. Tell us about that experience.
My feet didn’t touch the ground the whole time. The experience was unreal, I played half back and changed between a lot of players; Ashton Hams, Mark Le Cras, etc! Best experience when the crowd goes up!
Alright, time to talk some Dream Team! Travis Varcoe is the most selected player in DT from the Cats, should we all be locking him in?
Lock him in! He will have a massive year and will play all over the ground I think!
Jimmy Bartel has been on our radar since being named as a MID/FWD. How has he been progressing and where is he likely to line up?
Jimmy is just getting back to full training since Christmas and is looking very sharp. Jimmy can play anywhere and has been like that at training.
Do you play Dream Team? How have you gone in the past?
Look mate I will be honest I do try but average about 800! In other words I’m no good at it. I need the Warne Dawg and the boys at DT Talk to help me out a bit!
Which Cats will be your first selected this year? And who else will you be looking at from other clubs?
Couldn’t go past Hawk and Sel, both in good form. I would lock Jared Rivers in and also Mitch Duncan as a couple of smokies. I’m biased so I would have a full Cats team. Haha… but you can’t go past Ablett, Beams, Swan.
Of the draftees, who do you think will make an impact this season?
Gold Coast’s Jesse Longergan is set to play Round 1 I hear. Get the Launnie boy in your side!
Thanks heaps to Jacko for his time. We’ll be keeping an eye on him this year. The kid is a jet and hopefully we’ll be ready to pick him in our sides come round one. Good luck mate!
