What is this AFL Fantasy stuff?

aflfantasypromo

It seems that AFL Dream Team is undergoing a bit of a change. If you have been taking notice on Twitter, Facebook, AFL website, etc, you would have noticed a lot of references to AFL Fantasy. Is it a name change for DT or something more?

aflfantasyBefore you panic, AFL Dream Team is staying. The salary cap game that we have been playing for 10 years will stay in it’s “normal” form (albeit a few rule changes for 2013). The whole AFL Fantasy term seems to be a broad name for all of the products that will be offered through the AFL website; DT being one of them. We will also see a new draft game (a HUGE overhaul from the DT Pro games that Assistant Coach subscribers have been playing). This will be available for free. Apparently there will be some other things that come under the AFL Fantasy umbrella… but we have no idea what they are as yet. Something to look forward to when they make the announcement on all of it in the coming weeks.

So what does this mean for “DT” Talk? Well, Dream Team still exists, and so will we! We’re not looking at any name change in the near future but we will evolve as the game continues to evolve so expect some draft content on here this pre-season and throughout the season.

We are gearing up for a huge year! Make sure you stay tuned to DT Talk throughout the pre-season (especially at the moment for the awesome Deck of DT) and stay connected with us on Twitter (@DTTALK) and Facebook (facebook.com/DTTALK).

  • I’ve never done any of this draft stuff before, how does it all work?

    • I played it this year. If you bought Assistant coach than it gave you a extra game to play called DT Pro. If you wanted to play you needed sign up and and were put in a league or if you wanted to join a certain league. Then you would all vote on a time where you leagues draft would be done. DT Pro would randomly select the draft order, but would end up being fair because if you had the #1 pick your next wouldn’t be till 16th but if you didn’t have your first pick till 8th then you would get 9th next and so on. If i was to pick Ablett as my number 1 pick then no other team can select him. So once a player has been picked no one else can have him. But you still had to pick players to fit your structure and i think it was 4 backs, 5 mids, 2 rucks and 4 fwds. Throughout the year you where able to either swap out players for other players that where yet to be pick by anyone or do a trade with an opponent. You had unlimited trades or swaps for the whole year.

Hope that sounded clear enough. But i think they have changed it anyway.

    • There will be plenty of coverage and analysis on Draft-style fantasy this year – stay tuned.

  • I have played a lot of NFL fantasy in the last few years and think it can be good. Does the draft game work better in the NFL than here? Probably, but it should be interesting.

After playing DT Pro as an aside last year there is one massive flaw that absolutely needs to be fixed…

You can not have a captain in a draft game!

The snake draft system works on the basis that picks 1&20 roughly equate to 2&19, 3&18,… 10&11. This becomes farcical when your number one pick counts for double. As 1*2&20 is clearly superior to 10*2&11 (Dane Swan anyone?).

I feel that the huge domination of Swan and Ablett (as well as a few others) make the draft inherently unfair in AFL, to the point that picks 1-5 will win anyway in most leagues. However, if you have a captain option, than this imbalance makes it totally pointless to play from the lower Round 1 picks.

    • Well I’ve never played it before but that sounds ridiculous that there are captains. So just thinking tactically here, with your picks (assuming they remove captains) would it be best to just pick the highest scoring player available or the most outstanding player in relation to their position?

    • Agreed mate – very good point indeed.

  • You could change the name of the site to “Fantasy Talk”.

People could call in and have a deep and meaningful with Warnie, Roy or Cal, depending on how they’re feeling, for an hour or so.

Think of the new income stream fellas!

Lots of marketing opportunities in this for you guys – if you have the costumes!

  • Thanks Warnie for clarifying – I thought that was the gist of it but was not sure if the AFL Fantasy was the umbrella name or specific to our DT comp.

  • Anyone know if Assistant Picker opens up tonight .. Alot of people gonna wait till midnight tonight .. dont know why they cant just give us a date

    • I’m wondering the same thing – Warnie said 17th December in the write up onthe new rule changes. But is awful quiet out there – no excitement out there in the internet world. Maeks me wonder??????????

  • Assistant Picker working for anyone yet? Or do you reckon it will come on in the morning?
