Deck of Dream Team 2012: Sam Gilbert

Name: Sam Gilbert
Club: St Kilda
Position: Defender
Assistant Coach 2012 Price: $345,600
Bye Rounds: R13
2011 Average: 79.8
2011 Games Played: 22
Predicted Average: 90

Why should I pick him?

There’s no real need to highlight that Gilbert has been a fantasy favourite in the fairly recent past. Let’s remind ourselves of his former glory by perusing his stats for the last three years, paying particular attention to 2009 and 2010…

Year Games Kicks Handballs Disposals Marks Goals Behinds Tackles Hitouts FF FA
2011 23 9.4 7.7 17.1 4.8 0.1 0.2 3.1 0.8 0.8 1.3
2010 26 13.2 9.0 22.3 7.5 0.1 0.2 2.5 0.1 0.6 1.2
2009 22 13.1 8.3 21.4 7.0 0 0 3.3 0 0.8 1.0

Gathering 21+ disposals with a healthy kick-to-handball ratio of about 1.5:1 and taking around 7 marks a game elevated Gilbert to clear premium status over the course of 2009 and 2010. Providing rebound and linkage out of defence is his bread-and-butter, which made him such a DT-impact player in 2009 (avg 89.1 ppg) and 2010 (avg 93.2 ppg). In those two season he returned just five and six sub-80 point games respectively, marking him as a reliable scorer. He is durable, missing just 7 games in seasons 2007 and 2008 and none in in the last three.

The role that he will be playing under Scott Watter’s command will be the key here and the NAB Cup will give us a decent preview of what we can expect from Gilbert this coming season. With the new coach touting a more high-scoring, attacking style of footy, Gilbert should return to the rebounding or link-man role out of defence where he is most effective.

Truth be told, the 2012 Dream Team season is looking like a tough one for the back line and part of the reason that Gilbert gets a card in the deck is due to the dearth of proven defensive guns. Surely he will have the opportunity to get back to his best next season and return to the fantasy-relevant fold! If he goes into the 2012 Premiership season with a full preseason and a positive NAB Cup, there is much to like about his mid-price tag of $345k.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

Gilbert was pretty much in the dog house in 2011, plagued by the off-field distraction of those footy trip pics and no doubt feeling the heat from his over-exposed team mates. He fell off the face of the DT world too, suffering on-field as he was played in somewhat unfamiliar roles by former coach Ross Lyon. His exposed form (pardon the pun!) last season was erratic, to say the least. His fall from the premium DT defender ranks in 2010 to the muddling pile in 2011 might be enough to scare most punters off him for season 2012.

Off-field antics are one thing, but being able to produce solid scores consistently for fantasy coaches is another thing entirely. Thankfully then-coach Lyon proclaimed Gilbert as a DT dud for 2011 when he announced his intention in the preseason to have Sam pinch-hitting up forward, saving the majority of coaches from selecting him and enduring his wretched season. Whether or not he can turn that all around for 2012 is the big question. Hopefully he’s put all the drama of 2011 behind him!

Oh, and if he is involved in another off-season scandal… Avoid!

Deck of DT Rating:

QUEEN – If he wants to step back up as a premium Dream Team defender, Gilbert needs to put up a good show for new coach Watters and impress us in the process. His NAB Cup form will be telling and he will definitely be worth following, perhaps even as an upgrade target after that loathsome Round 13 bye. Sure, he’s a bit of a wildcard in this deck, maybe even a joker, but he has the history and upside for his cost that makes him worthy of consideration for 2012.

    • Does the fact he is a Queenslander count against him? It kinda does with Beams, even though I love Beams for everything but his tatts, brain and set shots on goal.

  • Hey lads just doing some prep work b4 Feb 1. Looking to set up a ridiculously good league to try and come 1stin the league rankings. • Hahahaha, u bunch of dumb ass Lame morons, I clearly knew u would remember me from the not wanting leagues and u took the bait hook line and sinker!! Possibly the best troll I have seen on this site that sucked the most fools in can’t believe how stirred up u all got. LOL. Made my day and to think u thought u were so “clever” for remembering me and “catching” me out, absolutely priceless. Haha.

        • Go AWAY!!! FAR FAR AWAY!!! Pest!

        • Oh boy. We all saw your Facebook profile. Thanks for coming to our site. Have a fun season. You’re no troll, just a silly young man.

        • Either has a very low IQ or some other mental malfunction. See you next year or under whatever stupid identity you pick next.

          • Haha. Clearly I didn’t use my real Facebook profile Warnie but thanks for ur concern. I take it u tried to block me or something judging by ur comments, so u really just blocked some random who probably doesn’t even play Dream Team! Ps I hope everyone sent some abuse his way on Facebook. LOL. I think everyone needs to take few really deep breaths and calm down a little bit. Looks like everyone fell for a double bluff. Haha.

          • What’s sad is it sounds like you used some poor blokes fb to deal out some sought of revenge for whatever reason. Reality is us DT Talk users are everyday blokes (and the occasional woman) and are only here for 1 reason..Talk all things DT. Warnie prob has banned you by now – If not Warnie get rid of the moron plz.

          • +1

        • go back to playing dungeons and dragons…and as if anyone is believing your excuse about us taking the bait,,haha thats the first thing someone that cant come up with anything better to say says

how ya going with your applicants,i bet ya flooded with people wanting into your super league pfft haha ,picture on facebook classic what a tool (not that iv had a look),the laugh i got was allready enough
i bet your the bloke from last yr that was going on about having 5 or teams and was creaming over a good score in the first rnd

        • I would have checked his facebook profile for a laugh, but by the way he tried to communicate, I was worried his so called ‘neck’, might have turned out to be a section of his tiny ‘penis’.

          • man, totally wrong spot for this post hahahah meant to be for ‘theman’ trolling like a bitch.

    • What’s your team name from last year bro, because there’s noone named Michael anywhere near the top 20.

    • Fuck ya league why do you have a close up of your neck on fb?? are you 1 of these badass mofo’s with a tatt saying ‘1%’

  • Considering Gilbert, but wary of having too many players from any team in the same position. The byes are going to bite this year.

  • James Gwilt was one the biggest reasons for his drop last year aswell as he took over his role as the key playmaker out of the backline. This was the role that saw Gilbert rise into the premium status for previous 2 years.. With Gwilt likely to miss at least opening 5 rounds (probably more likely 7-9 rounds) id think Gilbert will go back to playing that position.

When it comes down to it Scott Watters isn’t stupid and will know that Gilbert makes a much better defender then forward so dont expect to see him up forward again.

One other thing is there has been word that he is also been training to possibly play full back.

    • Just have to hope that Beau Wilkes turns out to be a half decent FB as STK dont have much tall key defenders with Dawson leaving.. guess they still have Jason Blake as well, whos getting old and slow though.

Gilbert was already in my radar and will watch over preseason.
      Great addition to the deck!

      • theres no way wilkes can hold down full bk (wich isnt a bad thing for dt),but this bloke couldnt get a game for wc when they were crap, and he didnt set the wafl on fire ,i think he can be a good pick, but noo chance he plays full bk ,he used to work at the same place as me when he was at wc and heez no where near tall enough im a midget and he was only a bit taller than me

        • Didnt set the WAFL on fire? 43 goals in 10 games in 2nd half of season….. Simpkin will be given first crack at FB, not Wilkes. He will probably play up forward…

          • shoosh!!!,haha he still didnt set the wafl on fire ,he played in it for alot more than ten games, and like i said he couldnt cement a spot in a bottom team.
but for his price ill still take him ,but he wont play full bk,and i wouldnt take him if he was gonna

  • This guy is mentally fragile………

  • A real smokey here. Pass for me, too many ‘what ifs’ .

  • Surely there’s no way anybody will be able to fit him in with the bye round that he’s in. Along with that, he’s also way too risky in my opinion, as I don’t see any reason why he would improve from last season. Pass.

  • Great choice for the deck. It is these “what if” players that make the deck, and the comments following so worth while.

Any idea as to when the Swans write up is likely to come up? Not that I think there is too much value in the Swannies other than a couple of bench players in Walsh and Mitchell.

I noticed from the Richmond write up that there was a tiger DT league. I would like to create one later for all the swannies out there in DT land.

  • New coach, new gameplan, (yay)…oh, and the, “Gwilt factor”…..anything’s possible!
I’m aiming to go into the MBRs, with my backline in the format of 2/3/4, (r11/r12/r13) so I could fit him in, but he would most likely be traded to say, Shaw/Enright/Adcock in rnd 13.
BUT, there are some good looking rookies with the r13 bye, and therein lies the problem!
So if he’s looking the goods, would be up against Birchall for a spot.
    Cheers Tee Tee.

  • I’ve refrained from commenting on the bye rounds in my cards… I figure that most coaches have worked out their strategy and structure for tackling the MBRs so it’s just a matter of whether or not some of these guys fit your plans.

Backline is probably where I might take a couple of risks on guys like Conca and Gilbert.

  • Im never gonna pick a guy who looks like a teddy bear who shaves

    • Except Micky Barlow who looks like a teddy bear that stuck its fingers in a power socket!!!

      • Thats how he dominates my friend ;)

If Gilbert had Hypertrichosis (excess facial and body hair disease), you’d wack a price tag on him for sure…haha
