Get Off The Bench: Round 12

This week we are looking at a round where all of your bench guys who are fit and in form should be available.  The only players that you should not be considering due to the bye are Jasper Pittard or Ben Jacobs.  If you have any other Power fringe players on your list, just go straight to the Delete My Team button now.  But even with this wealth of avaialable talent this week we are still hamstrung on the field with guys missing for various reasons such as Swan, Montagna, Thomas and maybe Buddy (even though named, he isn’t a certainty apparently).  You should also be now right in the midst of undertaking all of your upgrades so you hopefully only need one of these fringe players on your ground in each position.

Put your faith in these guys

Heppell and Hibberd are two guys that most of us would have as they are up there with the best of the best in this year’s rookie class and this week they get to have a run on the now famous Patterson’s Playground.  I expect these boys to relish the wide open spaces given their pace.  The only question mark is which Dockers team they will face, the good one or the crap one.  Either way I will have both of these guys on the ground on my team.  In that same game we have Nick Lower and for those that haven’t traded him out, he has turned out to be a very solid player averaging 97 over his last 3 games.  I would expect scores in the high 70’s to low 90’s from him most weeks.

Whilst in the west, Jack Darling is another that I think most people will be looking at as a keeper for their last spot in the Fwds or first spot on the bench.  He bounced back to his normal scoring level last week after his 50 against the Pies and this week he is in Adelaide against the Crows.  The worry here for Adelaide is who to play on him.  If Rutten goes to Kennedy or the Q Stick as you would expect, I don’t know if they have anyone else strong enough to go with big Jack.

Another bloke that bounced back was Nick Duigan.  Many thought he wouldn’t score because against Port the ball wouldn’t be down his end, well that only happened for one quarter and he wound up with a respectable 78.  He may be in the same predicament this week against the Lions so you may want to temper your expectations.

Stefan Martin continued his good run for Melbourne as did his teammate Evans along with new boy Howe (but don’t play this kid just yet, watch him for another week).  This week they come up against the Pies though, so I don’t expect the high scores from the se guys this week, but they will still be solid for you and probably score in the 60’s – low 70’s.

Trent McKenzie has put together a very tidy season and has been smashing out scores in the 60-80 range consistently and had his first ton on the weekend.  I like him for a good solid score.

Puopolo got amongst it again against the Dockers with 70pts.  He isn’t going to be a massively high scoring machine, but once again he is a steady option for you with only one score under 60 in his 5 outings.  Ed Curnow came back and managed 69pts.  He had his shoulder tested out a few times too by the Power boys and he held up.  So I think he should be back to form shortly.

Z Smith is a bloke that with Sandi down, you should have on your field.  He came up against the best Ruckman going around last week in big Cox and still smashed out a 107.  This week he has Goldstein and Petrie, but I think he will show them up around the ground and score very well again.  The other ruck that people have covering Sandi, Petrie has been playing very well also.  He is up against Z Smith and the GC boys and if he stays forward I think he will get Bock on him so that may curtail his scoring a touch.

Swallow is one that I would think a lot of people would be playing if you need to, he can be a very nice cover sometimes.  He has had two lower games over the two games after the bye with 62 and 53.  I can see him coming back this week with a nice good player.

Krak seems to have now settled into a rhythm and is scoring in the 65 – 80 range which is what I see as his average going forward, however, with Swanny and Daisy out this week, look for his production to step up a bit.

Stewart Crameri is still going well with an 82 which follows up his 46 prior to his bye last week.  Tendai Mzungu had to play for a lot of us last week with Buddy and Chappy out, and he was ok with his 59.  Perhaps not exactly what we had hoped for but he is a good choice if you are looking for an emergency.  He is back at Pattersons this week and I would hope that he can lift that score again.

Reece Conca had a crap 29 in his last game, but that was in Darwin in that loss to the Power.  Prior to that he has been very reliable and I am prepared to give him another go.  They are up against Sydney in Sydney though, so this will be a test for him.

Alex Johnson from Sydney has had two 83’s in a row now and this backed up on a 62.  The more this guy plays the better he gets!  He flew under a lot of radars and is only in 15,586 teams at the moment, but I bet a lot of those people didn’t have him from day 1.

You’ve been ok but I just don’t trust ya…

Luke Thompson and Matthew Wright from the Crows are guys that I just don’t know about at the moment.  They have all scored well but have had some bad games too and with the form of the Crows at the moment I just wouldn’t run the risk of these guys.  They would be ok as an Emergency but that is about it.

Whilst looking at teams, Brisbane favourites Bewick and O’Brien have been trading vests over the last two weeks and their scores have been pretty average.  They were staples but I would get rid of these guys if you still have them particularly since BOTH have been dropped this week.

Dan Harris and Danny Stanley now these two boys have been favourites of mine but Harris has let me down over the last couple of weeks and Stanley did last week.  To be honest, it is time to upgrade these boys as they have reached their peak.  If you need to I would play them but if you can upgrade them that would be a better plan.

Shaun Atley has finally had a reasonable score after a run of 30’s.  But with them up against  Gold Coast away I just don’t have the faith.  Simon Buckley is back in the Collingwood squad, but since they play Monday we won’t know their final 22 before lockout, so play him with EXTREME caution.

Keiran Harper had a good first up game and he has dropped off a bit since then.  And the coach agrees with me cause he has been dropped.  His mate Pedersen finally got another game last week with a nice 76.  But given that was his first game for 4 weeks we can’t get a form line on him.  I think he can score well, but can he do it consistently.  On the Roos, C Rich hasn’t played for 6 weeks now, dump him!

Alot of us brought in Thomas Lynch from the GCS a couple of weeks ago after his 95 and 92 but since then he has had 66 and 31.  Gotta say he cost me last week and that pissed me off!  So I think at best he will be an emergency for me.    Prestia is still in there, but I bet ya he gets the bloody vest again and won’t make us any cash!  Sam Iles is a guy that a lot of people like, and he has been solid, but just hasn’t been getting the big scores that people had hoped.

Jake Batchelor has been fairly up and down.  He just doesn’t have the consistency for me.  His last 5 have gone 31, 83, 52, 80, 43.  So on average he should have a good score this week, but don’t bet on it.  Nick Smith is another that has been in this boat of late.  He has had 87, 39, 55, 27 in his last 4, once again, not enough consistency for me.

Another guy I got a bagging for recommending was Mark Nicoski Over his last 6 has seen him get 90, 90, 75, 30, 73 and 70 with that 30 being red vested.  I don’t know that I would rate him as highly as I did a few weeks ago, but he could be used at a pinch.

Libba and Wallis are two guys that have been a concern of late.  Libba was on fire and then came in with a 26 and then a week off with soreness.  Wallis has had 64 and 73 in the last two weeks but prior to that he wasn’t consistent.  I just don’t know if I can trust them, particularly with the form of the Doggies at the moment.  This week Libba won the raffle and is in with Wallis out.  Whilst they are not getting consistent games you can’t trust their form.

So there are plenty of options for you for this week.  I have put some rankings together for you below, in working them out I have had a look at the form of the guys as well as who they are playing and where they are playing.  But feel free to debate them in the comments below and tweet me on @pkd73 if you want any other assistance leading up to lockout.

  • If you have premium Power players delete your team, HA! As a Crows supporter I love hearing that!

    • Man I gotta get a day shift job!

    • Well I did say if you have other Power fringe players delete your team, premiums, well Kornes and Boak would be the only ones you would have considered I would think. Cassisi was one I have had over the last couple of years as he has had the No2 amount of tackles in the league behind Kirk over the last two years.

      • I got Carlile last year thinking he’d have a breakout as a rebounding backman. Hmm……

        • Well I have troy Chaplin in my backine,
          and haven’t regretted the decision.
he has mostly scored very well.

  • is jobe watson a good buy???

    • ideally wait a week or two, his BE is high

only get him in if you don’t mind about the round 24 bye

  • how about jeremy howe from melbourne???

    • “Stefan Martin continued his good run for Melbourne as did his Evans along with new boy Howe (but don’t play this kid just yet, watch him for another week).”

  • The Port bashing on this site is getting really old.
Yes we’ve had a bad year, get over it.

    • Don’t worry it bugs me as much as you. But facts are facts, they aren’t playing well, we shouldn’t have them in our teams apart from Jacobs or Pittard or maybe Kane Cornes and they get scored against heavily.

So don’t worry I am a suffering Port fan too.

    • Im a Crows fan and we aint so good either. All good, ride the good times and the bad. A true supporter sticks by his/her team. Just a bit of friendly ribbing bud.

  • Dunny, a repeat of a question I asked on another thread, what about Vardy? Is he a certain in a strong Geelong side?

    • I have had a long think about him myself. I just don’t know if he can hold his spot. One poor game and the Tomahawk comes back in but similarly one big injury to Pods or Otten and he keeps his spot. I want to see him for another week before I would play him.

  • Yeah great read as always Dunny.

Has anyone looked at Dan Nicholson from Melbourne as a possible downgrade??

    • Yes, I’m just a tad concerned about his job security though. I’m debating who out of Duigan or Stanley to trade down to him.

What about Christian Howard? Based on team selections this week you would almost say the Dogs have kissed the season goodbye, so he may be a chance from here on in?

  • Love this article Dunny! I just hope that Lower, Heppell, Hibberd and Buckley make the cut this/Saturday afternoon.

    • Of those guys I think that Buckley is the least likely to hold on, but remember we won’t know about him until after Lockout I don’t think since they play Monday.

      • That being said Dunny would you have him as your emergency over Prestia?

        • Risky, only because you will know that Prestia is playing. It really depends on how big a risk you want to take.

  • I’m a bit worried this week, have to play swallow and hibberd in the midfield this week with swan out while on my defender bench I’ve got lower and poo wasted.

Which 2 out of hibberd, swallow and mzungu?

    Cheers

    • After reading the article above, I would suggest Hibberd & Swallow.

      • Thanks mate :)

        • Hibberd is on extended bench so may not even get a run… :[

          • Looking at the Dons line up ive got this feeling that Hibberd will miss out this week.

By god I hope not but I just got this feeling.

            Regards

            The Unemployed

    • Which 2 should I play is what i meant

    • Swallow and Mzungu as they are both playing at home. Hibberd is playing away and the long trip (for Vic teams) to Perth.

    • I’ll assume you don’t have goddard, delido or Gibbs (or any of the other DEF/MID DPP’S)? Otherwise DPP switch Hibberd and them, and you can make use of your defenders on the bench?

      • Wow I can’t believe I didn’t think of that… Yeah I’ve got delidio and Gibbs so I sub one of them in for hibberd and then put lower on instead. Does that sound good? Cheers

    • Lower, Hibberd, Mzungu, Swallow, the Poo would be my guess

  • Hibberd could get dropped.

  • The Kings of Leon welcome back tour has officially begun.

    Featuring….

Goddard Gibbs Deledio Adcock Birchall Rawlings Stanley – Hibbard Duigan Poupolo
Pendlebury Murphy Selwood Mitchell Watson Boyd – Mzungu Atley Irons
    Cox Smith – Bailey Mcauley
Chapman Didak Goodes Pavlich Franklin Reiwoldt Knights – Krakour Richardson Smith

A full side for the first time since rnd 5 and a probabble weekly prize to add
You can pay with either cash or credit, so sit back, relax, and watch the master bulldoze his way home!

    • I can’t wait for Swan and Sandi to come back and score consistent 140+!

How many trades have you got left TKOL?

      • You let me know when they return and pump out 140’s then!
8 Trades left but my team is set!

        • 8 trades for 12 rounds, ooooh. Ya never know…

        • You are b***sh1t! You only have 2-4 trades left…….give it up for this year.
You probably got rid of swan this week knowing that he won’t play this and next – FAILED, you muppet.

I got rid of Swan when he was 481,000k and downgrade to Redden, as well as pocketing 120,000 in the process.

          • @ Kazkage, who picks up redden? what a rookie move!

you must be beating me right to be so confident?

            2 – 4 trades or 2 x 4 = 8.

Give it up yourself, Im about to drop bombs on this game!

          • Yeah, rookie mistake a***. Redden is my 7th Mid fool…..not bad as cover for byes/injuries right??

I’m Ranked #255 so of course I’m beating you, you muppet, otherwise I wouldn’t be so confident attacking you.

          • @ Kazcage

Well lets keep the banter up then pu$$y cake. Each morning after the final game of the round at 8am lets update where we are ranked on “vent/brag/whatever”.

Once I pass and you and enter the top 50 and nearly pinch this whole thing, then you’ll remember the day you had words with The King!

          • Ah TKOL you’re priceless. I’ve admired from afar, and tried to emulate your team. Are you seriously saying your team is set with Stanley as your 7th defender though? Surely Shaw or Fisher would be better in the Kings team?

        • You have Stanley on the ground and your team is set?? You have no ruck cover and Didak is in your team?? So next week you have Pendles, Didak and Krak out and a weak bench……. Funny stuff Tkol, if this is your final team and you are happy with it bad luck

    • You’re a massive tool but trading out Sandi was a good decision (assuming you had him, I’m guessing you did). But Bailey playing in your byes as well as a couple of other byes where you don’t have the greatest of cover (too many rookies playing for my liking anyway) will bring you too many crappy scores to really be confident.. Better luck next year mate.

    • swan to murphy not a bad trade tkol, but darling to didak is bad, no wonder i beat you in eliminator last week your team is average

    • I see a forward line doughnut in round 16 unless Smith or Richardson comes back

and I reckon a 6 premium backline is a bit thin to be able to call your team “finished”.

  • Darling or Krackour on the ground?
    Which 2 out of Harris/Hibberd/Mzungu?

    Thanks.

  • Hmmm… I have Pendlebury as captain, but I can’t wait that long till his game… but Im staying with it because If I change captains he will get 140+…

  • Which one out of hibbered, mzungu or darling for the final spot

    • Hibberd, but only if you have an emerg in case he is a late withdrawl.

      • He is only named on the extended bench. Do you think he will play?

I would make sure you have cover just incase he isnt named in the final 22.

        Regards

        The Unemployed

  • Good write up Dunny, thanks mate.

Would have to elevate Petrie from this list to premo though. Finally stringing some good scores together in a sht team and looking fit as well. All the forward ball seems to be being sent in his direction lately so I can feel another 120+ from him soon. Had him from day dot and there to stay.
…now watch him go and cop an f-ing injury.

    • He has been fantastic.
As a North supporter Ive been hoping for years he would settle forward and what do you know it, as soon as he does he hits all australian form! If he keeps this up of course!

      • And he is conspiculously absent from your team.

Once again TK brings the LOLs

    • Yeah, I only put him in as a few people have asked me to over the last couple of weeks. I have him and Z Smith so need to work out which one to play.

      • If it helps the decision, I played Petrie in the ruck last week with Smith on the bench. Franklin pulled out so I copped a doughnut. Better off playing Smith and having depth and a solid emergency up forward.

  • WHAT HAPPENED TO FANTASY FREAKOS RAVE?

  • Looking for a FWD upgrade option. I’m looking @ Chapman, Fyfe, ROK & Goodes. Whose the cream of that crop?

    • LeCras

      • +1. If he keeps playing midfield, he’s gonna get some huge scores. The eagles are rotating him and Shuey between ruck rover/forward pocket in the same way that Cox and Naitanui are rotating between on ball and forward line.

    • Harvey in a week or two…

      • If you’re talking about cream of the crop, you’d have to be talking about the long time best, then Goodes or Chapman. Check out the articles on forwards (the bradbury or sallie one, it’ll still be on the most recent). Gives all the data you’d want to make such a decision.

    • Chapman would be the cream but has groin issues, fyfe has been consistent but has shoulder problems i think, goodes is solid but with bradshaw definite out i think he will play a more fwd role and rok started the year a bit shaky but has strung together some good scores and plays on the ball, for value and good scoring potential without the burden of injuries i would go ROK.

  • If someone could hook me up with the Fantasy Freako that’d be awesome. New email address and forgot to subscribe again. wdharris@our.ecu.edu.au

  • Have seen quite a few people talking up Lower as a potential keeper in the backline but I suspect he’s reached his high water mark for 2011. Looking at this list of options personally I would play others (e.g. Hibberd, if named) over him this week for reasons of consistency if you can.

We’ve benefitted from his midfield time but let’s not forget his DT lows (41,42, 55), which have come just as often – not scores you’d want to be copping going forward if you can help it. Nick’s had a great run but is trade bait in my team from this point.

Freo has been weathering an injury storm and will start to regain its more experienced players soon, which will surely impact his game time and role negatively. While he’s been an effective accumulator of the ball at times, the disposal quality can be highly questionable (as you would expect from a rookie). This week already back on the bench and no certainty to play, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him become a fringe player again within a month… with cheap defender upgrade options available, I reckon it could be time cash in while the price is peaking.

    • 2 of those scores he was subbed. Doesn’t look a chance of getting subbed out anymore. Although Harvey has done some strange things this year..

    • I think you are jumping the gun on Lower.
As mentioned he was subbed twice coz his fitness was questionable but now seems more than capable of running out games. He is one of only a couple of taggers in Freos squad so that alone should keep him in the team. Maybe it has been a coincedence but every time I have watched him he has played well.

    • He was best on ground a couple of weeks ago and has been in their best 5 or 6 in the last two weeks in a heavy loss and game that they should have won. He’s now part of their midfield rotation, so I think his scoring should be ok from now on. I think the predictions of high 70’s to low 90’s mentioned is pretty spot on.

  • Hibberd named in the back pocket for Benidgo – with Essendon playing in Perth… Hmmm… http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?client=1-118-0-0-0&sID=129988&&news_task=DETAIL&articleID=15983217&sectionID=129988

The two obvious players – Browne, Bellchambers – to be dropped from Essendon’s squad are also there. Doesn’t appear good.

  • Pulled the trigger on Swallow to Didak.

Didak is sure to get midfield time this week with Swan and Thomas out so should score well. Figured Swallow has a high BE and will likely drop and Didak will likely rise so no point waiting till after the bye. Have the bench coverage for the bye next week.

Fell 5K short of a Heppel to Broughton trade. Not convinced on Broughton anyway so ay hold off for Adcock to come into range and preserve some trades.

Down to 10 now and want at least 6 to cover LTI’s and finals sideways trades.

  • Trading out Stanley this week.
Who would you replace him with?
howard from the dogs or Nicholson from Melb?

    • I would be going Howard, the dogs like him as he looks like one of the few who are giving it a real crack over the last couple of weeks. Was their first round draft pick before last season also so he’s got the talent. Not so sure on Nicholson’s JS as well as being sub both games would worry me.

    • Howard for me too

  • Petrie still in these lists………and then how is he 3rd in fwds behind Darling & Krak???
Great write up still though. Cheers.

    • A few people asked to put Petrie in, but I may take him out again next week if he has another solid score this week.

Only reason he is behind those two guys is Darling is playing Crows and Krak is playing Melb at MCG where he usually tears it up. Petrie at Metricon against GCS is a big unknown and I think the other two guys are just more stable in that circumstance. But you are right, you could make an argument to have him higher for sure.

      • Fair enough mate, i would have thought anyone with Petrie would be starting him (i have had him since round 1 and started him every time he’s played).
3 tons in a row, 91 v’s Geelong at the Cattery and 100+ v’s Sydney in the wet is enough to say premium to me.
Agree Krak should score big this week with other mids out, more time for him.
Not so sure about Darling as on/off Crows at home………who knows which Adelaide side will turn up. The boy can play though.

Tough job this article, so much is subjective. Well done, heaps of details in it!!! :-)

  • Andrew Krak will score more points that luke hodge this weekend becasue he will get more game time in the middle than usual

  • I’ve got one spot up for grabs on my starting lineup (fwds) and I just can’t decide

I could have Krak, Darling, Mzungu or due to DPP Z Smith, Puops or Hibberd

Yout gotta love DPP but jeez it makes it hard to select which rookie to play.

Krak or Darling I think will get the nod but a honorable mention must go to Z.Smith and Hibberd who were mighty close to getting a game but will be this weeks emg

  • Thoughts on this week Darling to Didak and Krak to Chappy

Then next week Matera to Howe and Heppell to Sylvia?

    • there some good upgrades i reckon, go for it!

      • Cheers Kenjo

Need to hold on the Sylvia trade and see when he will bottom out and also the Howe trade, hopefully he has a good run.

  • luckily i no longer have to read this article as i only play 1 rookie now and thats heppell….also gonna play lower for dane swan…thats it, fk rookies :D

  • A touch worried if Hibberd will play this week – who would you have as your emergency out of a bench of Stanley, Retzlaff and Nicholson?

  • Should I down grade Darling or Krak? I see Darling is above Krak and thats the way I’m leaning.

  • Don’t agree with what Chook said about Libba. He gets consistent games and was out last week with the General as many rookies have been. He’s had 1 bad game and should be cut a bit of slack

  • Hey Guys,

Should I play Lower, Duigan or Stanley as my 7th defender?

  • Curnow or Hibberd to outscore?

  • quick help please!! ottens or zsmith in the ruck? almost identical averages on the year.

  • ‘refreshed’ my page and now every single player has a bandaid …terrorist attack? ebola virus??

  • the intensity of AFL seems to have caught up with darling. scored 21 points today.

he’ll probably be rested next week
