The Weekend Wash-Up – Round 2

Here’s Matt’s rant … plus don’t miss the podcast.

I’m hungover, I don’t really want to be here, yet here we are… What a game we play. There’s a few players in need of a walk down the hall of mirrors after the weekend, it’s time for the weekend wash-up!

LEGENDS

Wanganeen-Milera (122) – A few coaches may have been sweating during the first quarter, but there should have been little doubt NWM would get it done. He’s a gun, and I don’t think he has anything to worry about in Riley Bonner.

Steele (120) – He’s back. It’s amazing what happens when a gun player in his prime gets back to full fitness. Jack Steele is a 110 guy and I’m pretty gutted I don’t own him.

Dawson (131) – LEGEND! I captained the highest scoring player of the round, and I still sucked. Adds up. I don’t even think Dawson had a great game, but if he can hug his way to 130 in an average performance I think he could post some absolute monsters. Stand by your premiums.

Stewart (114) – Adelaide decided it would be a great idea to just keep launching it to the best defender in the competition. Bizarre stuff, but you take it. He’ll average 100, as always.

Crouch (110) – The eye test is seriously telling me Matt Crouch is back to his best. His best is a 108 average. I think he’s still great value, he’s so clean in the contest and has been Adelaide’s best player by the length of Flemington. Legend.

AFL 2024 Round 02 - Adelaide v Geelong - A-46626160

Sheezel (121) – Sheez nuts is incredibly good at football. Not sure what more I need to say. Daicos 2.0, let’s hope North stay average so we never have to worry about tags…

Serong (125) – I was watching this game and wondering, how the hell are we ever going to be able to afford Serong? Can you even tag him? Huge Brownlow smokey, he looks like just about the best midfielder in the comp. Gun.

Jackson (108) – It was a great fantasy score, but an even better performance from Luke Jackson. 24 disposals at 96%, 7 clearances, 2 goals. Why they re-signed Sean Darcy I will never know. Fingers crossed he keeps this up, he’ll be a top 6 lock.

Powell (113) – Tom Powell dominating was not on my Round 2 bingo card. He popped into my team during pre-season, and from the clouds he has entered my team this week. 93% CBAs, when you have a full time midfielder playing 85% game time, I’m on board. Let’s hope he passes the eye test when I watch him closely for the first time ever next week.

Xerri (104) – Xerri is miles ahead of Grundy, his tackling and follow up efforts are insane. He was priced at $580k and looks like he can average 100+. Why he isn’t in my team I will never know. It’s not too late to grab him.

Clark (99) – I only got to see the first quarter and a half of this game, so it’s obviously beyond me how he possibly managed this score. I’ll take it. The man can junk!

Salem (105) – Speaking of managing to get to a score… Junk time king, or ultimate kissed on the you know what? The midfield role is gone, and the scoring was gone too for 90% of the game. Concerning long term but you absolutely take it.

D’Ambrosio (96) – Mass! I asked him to back it up and he did exactly that. Priced at 60 and averaging 95, yep I should be able to squeeze him in. Jet.

AFL 2024 Round 01 - Essendon v Hawthorn - A-46505232

Heeney (117) – Best player in the comp? He certainly looks like it. Imagine wasting this level of talent as a pure forward? He was obviously always a gun, now you just have him in the game more. What a concept. Cheers Horse.

Merrett (122) – News just in, Zach Merrett can fantasy football. He can tend to be a slow starter but it’s not happening this season. It’s a shame, he’s always my favourite trade target in Rounds 4-6. Fingers crossed he can avoid a concussion affected 20.

Setterfield (115) – I’m getting 2023 flashbacks. Setters started like this last year then fell off, and Darcy Parish should be back next week. You couldn’t jump on now, but what a POD to start the season. Genius.

Martin (103) – Huge tick. Nick Martin is him. His disposal lines are feeding families.

Butters (117) – You can tag Rozee (116) in here as well. Both are guns, but goodness me Zak Butters looks on another level. He dropped off late in the final term, perhaps still finding that match fitness. Yet he’s still averaging 112. Why did we ever think we couldn’t own Rozee and Butters as if two good players have never been on the same team before? Bizarre stuff.

Green (120) – Tom Green is not only an elite football player, he’s also sitting in the top 100 in Fantasy. I guess some people just have ‘it’. I certainly don’t. He is a fantasy pig in the making.

AFL 2024 Round 02 - West Coast v GWS - A-46686266

LOSERS

I’m too hungover to formulate anything clever right now, so here’s some GIFs instead.

Bonner (61) – Those turnovers were… Interesting. Let’s just say I don’t believe Ross when he tells the media he was supporting.

Marshall (86) – You paid over 1 million dollars for this? A bigger waste of money than building a state of the art anything in Queensland.

Daicos (61) – If an opponent blows on Nick Daicos, your weekend is ruined. He’s an incredible football player no doubt, but he’s not the full package yet…

Young (75) – Hayden Young has never proven to us that he is anything other than a slightly above average footballer. Are we just projecting this scoring increase in our minds? Perhaps…

Fyfe (63) – This ruined my weekend, and I bet I wasn’t the only punter. 19 touches!!! Sore back my ass. Cowardly, but we all knew it was a risk.

Newcombe (68) – Mid season pickup for a reason. I ditched him last week and thank god, that saved my sanity. Big yikes.

Coffield (2) – The walking hospital ward didn’t disappoint. Thank god for best. Have to feel for him, and his coaches….

Budarick (61) – What a terrible footballer. Forget the fantasy scores, I don’t think he can actually kick let alone handball. There was some embarrassing stuff over the weekend, luckily I’ll never have to watch him again. My worst fantasy pick of all time, and that is saying something. Congratulations Connor.

Ash (18) – Eughhhhh…. What’s that brother?

Lynch (18) – How the mighty have fallen. Have yourself a day, Tom. These guys don’t even deserve GIFs.

Amon (81) – The half back experiment might be about to come to a conclusion. Pray he gets to that DPP in round 6 draft owners, I fear the worst.

Viney (60) – Aaaaand that’s why we don’t own Jack Viney in Fantasy. Good player, but we only notice his good scores…

Tsatas (51) – Just a very average footballer by the looks. Racking up possessions in junior footy doesn’t always translate to being a plus AFL footballer. I fear that may be the case here.

Hore (33) – The Marty party turned farty. Refer to this game sh*ts me. I paid up for what…

THIS GAME SH*TS ME

For a start, bloody cricket sh*ts me. Not only did I waste most of my Saturday’s over the summer, I did it all to get rolled for 60 (making a duck) in a grand final by a bunch of blokes that live and breathe the sport. While I didn’t really care about the result, I did care about not being able to react to the news that Marty Hore was the sub. Every man and his dog probably had Howes score on the weekend. Every man accept for me. It won’t be the only time rolling lockout burns me thanks to social sport, what a terrible idea it was and still is. Bin it. This game sh*ts me.

THE OTHER BITS AND PIECES

1821. I nailed the best scoring player of the round as captain and still barely made a par score. That says it all really. If I look on the positive side, what was a slightly below par score at the top managed to move me up 20,000 spots! So there’s that…

We weren’t sure how to tackle best 18, but the early indicators are it may be hard to make up too much ground when everybody wipes away their 4 worst scores… And boy do I have ground to make up. We need to be chasing the high ceiling scores, and there fore I am trading in 2 midpricers this week. And I wonder why I’m so sh*t at this game.

Budarick -> D’Ambrosio

Sexton -> Powell

Best of luck next week legends, be sure to check out the podcast as well! I am going to sleep, we do it all again next Sunday…

My dumbass drafted TPowell, dropped between post draft and Round 1, thought about getting him back just before the Giants game. Gets waivered after a 78 vs said Giants game.

Rookies all ok, 90 or something Brayshaw captain instead of steele (tossed a coin, lost), still dropped naicos’ shocker but got those borderline 90odd scores for 6-7 blokes who should do better, a couple were plain disappointing, lost a league match after the final siren in final game.

No injuries though so that’s nice for a change.

Oh, TGSM!

Just looked at the top 4 teams, they’re about 500pts ahead of me and 500k-700k richer after just 2 rounds, it’s already season over for me and about 80% of the rest of the comp unless you got lucky.

But do I (we) just suck? No it’s luck it turns out.

Ive left a good 150 points behind either on the bench or through poor captain outcomes, I bet top teams haven’t .

Compared to the top teams I had on average 11 of the same best 22 on ground, basically everyone (including me) had similar structure and comparable bench rooks.

Of the remaining 11 of mine on field only 4 didn’t show up on any team, of these (Brayshaw, LDU, Bolton & Rachelle) only 2 of them had actually been poor and only 1 of the 4 was a particularly risky pick.

There was a group of about 6 of my best players that they all had at least 4-5 of and another players they did have 4-5 of each that I didn’t, Whitfield, Sheez, NWM, Green, Serong, Crouch and Heeney.

Yes geniuses it all seems obvious now but is Wines over Crouch that crazy? Brayshaw over Serong? Not picking naicos?

It’s 50:50 calls and landing just a few of these blokes whilst avoiding a few others that makes all the difference, the he whole thing comes down to picking 8 or 9 out of about a dozen or so players, avoiding a few disasters.

One day I’ll nail the formula for the start but this season it’s the catch-up game again.

Previous winners have come from further behind to win after 2 rounds, having said that no one here on this site is going to win it, lol

fisher hold?? if we got more important players to get rid of like newc and sexton (in my case sadly), might be priority next week unless he goes 100+

cheers Matt!!

thankfully dodged a bullet with JHF out, meant i traded Coffield to Massimo instead of Wines..
like most ppl been eyeing off Powell, BUT with Sexton & Wines out and Gallagher in (low BE bench rook) i have enough $$ to get any player..

so i’ve got 3 options:
1. bring in Powell & bank the 500k for later (thinking Daicos/Gulden after the bye)
2a. pass on Powell in favour of a Serong/Rozee/Butters (rd 13 bye players)
2b. pass on Powell in favour of Jackson (leaves me 290k cash money)

cheers Matt..
would love to have Butters in my team (reminds me of Bartle, who was a personal fave player), but needing to solidify my FWD line, i’m leaning towards 1 to bank the $$ for a straight Dempsey/Campbell upgrade to Flanders next week..

I have Newcombe, Tsatas (was working nightshift before the late sub round 1), sexton. Unsure if I get Powel up forward but am left with an awkward 860k for Newcombe OR trade Newcombe to a primo and won’t have enough for powel. What should be the priority

You could trade Newcombe for Powell. All you need is a forward who has mid status. Trade Newk, put your for/mid in the midfield and trade in Powell, should have a fair bit of money left over to help with your second trade. Good luck.

Thanks mate. I’ve taken your advice and with a little DDP put yeo into the midfield and could afford wanganeen-Milera down back. Cheers

Tsatas has played, what, 10 games and you dump on him like that? Not cool.

Most of the other roasts were fair, and the article overall was a good read, but crapping on a talented young player like that is taking things a bit far.

I personally think Wines will be ok, he’ll drop a big score soon enough.
