Why should I pick him?

Providing that he is named in Round 1, Jack Sinclair has to be considered for your fantasy squads. Despite being known as more of a steady contributor, Sinclair came home like a steam train, averaging 109 in the second half of 2024. We’re talking about a guy who has averaged 102 for three consecutive seasons, so not only has he been consistent but he is flashing uber premium upside while he’s at it.

We love our pointless and totally unrelated basketball comparisons, and Sinclair is without a doubt the AFL fantasy version of a ‘3 level scorer’. Last year he not only averaged 35% CBAs, but also took 65 kick ins when playing at half back. Contested footy, uncontested +6’s, free kicks out the square, he does it all. It doesn’t matter where Sinc gets shuffled, he’s going to be in a fantasy friendly role and scoring well. Before his unfortunate hamstring setback it sounded like he was going to be at half back, but that was before Phillipou’s injury.

Is there a preferred role? In Sinclair’s 4 games where he had over 70% CBAs, he averaged 108 including a monster 156 in Round 8 vs North. However in his L5 average of 113, he was a part time midfielder at best, and his L3 of 109 was as a pure half back. What I’m saying is this bloke is a gun scorer no matter where he plays.

Sinclair also rarely misses games, playing over 20 games in 6 of his last 7 seasons, missing 5 games in the last 4 years. Thankfully the Saints avoid the dreaded opening round fixture, meaning he won’t be missing a game early in the season. He is as safe and reliable a scorer as they come, providing he is fit.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

Providing he is fit… Unfortunately we were in this exact scenario last year, with Sinclair in a race against time battling a calf injury to be fit for Round 1. He ended up returning for Round 2, but took a month to build his match fitness, averaging just 84. He averaged 107 for the remainder of the season. Once again Jack finds himself missing out on the most crucial time in pre-season with a hamstring strain, and despite him being likely to suit up in Round 1 it has to leave a big question mark on a guy worth over a million dollars.

Even if he was raring to go in Round 1, he is bloody expensive at almost $1.05M. Inflation is hitting hard. Is there enough meat on the bone to justify selecting him? You would need him to be pushing for the D1 spot, and that’s asking a lot.

He may need to be bumped slightly down draft boards also, a 4-5 week hamstring is on the more severe end and can often go ping again. There is no questions about the player, just the query on him being 100% against Adelaide in Rd 1.

Deck of DT Rating.

JACK

Unfortunately Jack is a Jack thanks to this pre-season setback, but don’t let that stop you picking him if he’s named against the Crows. The deck is locked in early, and Sinclair was in plenty of my early Fantasy squads. However this hamstring injury makes it almost impossible for me to pay over a million dollars for. Having said that, this is a guy who averaged almost 110 for the majority of the season and has clear upside in his price if he’s fully fit. Certainly don’t let him go sliding down the board on draft day, pick him in the second round with confidence. If he’s named in Round 1, he could be the ultimate POD to get you off to an absolute flier. If he starts slowly again, he will be a priority early upgrade target…

I know the weekend wash-up has always just been a review, and my rankings in the bio don’t exactly scream fantasy genius, but the podcast is back for a bit of a pre-season laugh! Come check us out as we navigate the fantasy pre-season with a more light-hearted view of all things fantasy that might accidentally nail a few calls along the way! Thanks legends.
