Why should I pick him?
After almost 2 solid seasons in the VFL, Allan was finally given a full game with midfield time towards the end of last season where he scored 87. This came from a great balance of inside vs outside game with 21 touches comprised of 10 handballs, 11 kicks, 6 tackles and a goal.
The most promising aspect of this form line is that it is almost exactly the same stats he was averaging in the VFL prior to getting his call up.
This to me says that Allan is ready to go if he gets the chance.
His VFL form in the month leading to his debut saw him averaging 87 with a high score of 108.
Don’t just take my word for it though, here’s a quote from Hayden Skipworth prior to christmas this year regarding Allan;
“Ed is an exciting prospect. He is a real athletic beast being a six foot three mid who can run at speed. He was always going to take some time; he didn’t play a lot of footy in his last year before being drafted; we’ve been really mindful to build him up slowly,” he said.
“His back end of last year, his form in the VFL, was unbelievable and his last game of the year I thought he was outstanding. He has carried that in to the off-season. We’re looking for him to come on even more; we are looking for that growth from underneath and he is certainly one.”
He’s also the player that Nick Daicos keeps mentioning when asked who he thinks will have a big 2025;
“Ed Allan is a really interesting one to watch. His potential is unbelievable. I think he can be an absolute superstar”
That’s a couple of grade A recommendations if I’ve ever seen one. Considering that he’s only 1% owned at the time of writing this he’s definitely worth a place on your watchlist.
Why shouldn’t I pick him?
Collingwood is a really tough team to break into at the moment for rookie mids.
Off season additions of Perryman and Houston will make the competition for spots harder and he’ll still be competing with guys like Fin Macrae.
At their best it’s hard to find a spot there for Allan with N.Daicos, J.Daicos, Mitchell, DeGoey, Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Crisp and Lipinski all but gluing their magnets onto the board in the best 22.
Add to this Allan’s awkward price point of $437,000 and it can seem like a safer bet to lock in a cheaper rookie with better job security.
Deck of DT Rating.
JACK
My thoughts around Allan here is more about watchlisting him for now.
Every box is ticked for him except the major one of job security.
Keep a close eye on him though because if he smashes the preseason and forces himself in he’s worth taking a punt on. If he doesn’t though, i’ll be keeping an eye on Collingwood’s injury list.
They are currently the oldest list in the AFL which means they’ll need to manage their older mids or will possibly lose a few during the season to soft tissue injuries.
If that happens I’d be scooping Allan off of the waiver wire in any draft comp that week.
Anthony can be found on 91.3 SportFM each Sunday during the AFL season on Behind the Goals.
