Chris – coach of Noeyedeer5 – was the 2024 AFL Fantasy Classic champion. He joins us today as a special guest for Winners Week where a former No.1 comes on to chat about a player for the Deck of DT.

Why should I pick him?

It’s 2023, going into round 9 I’m ranked 28th and getting into upgrade season, I had a decision to make, Andy Brayshaw was under priced after some poor scores early on but was turning it around, Callum Mills was even more under priced against his 2022 111 and was also on the rise, I gambled on the cheaper Callum, he got injured on 3, Brayshaw scored a ton, season was ruined!

Fast forward to 2025 and once again I’m pondering the gamble of Callum Mills. A defender priced at 74 and having done back to back 110+ seasons in the past in theory he’s a minimum 20 points under priced which sounds like a lock. Sydney will be licking its wounds after the grand final humbling and with Mills not playing that day, he might be a point of difference for the swans for 2025. Swans got beaten all over the ground that day, back in the 2022 grand final he played in defence and they got beaten that day too, so maybe Dean Cox’s first move as swans coach is to put him back on ball. In 2022 he had 8 scores over 120. In 2021 his floor score was 85 with 4 more scores over 120, he has fantasy game written all over him and with defenders being hard to pick this coming season his low price and high ownership 36% is a safety blanket if he doesn’t hit the heights.

Why shouldn’t I pick him?

See above season ending story. Also a lack of durability creeping in, hasn’t played every home and away game since 2022 and only 3 times in his career has he played all 22 games.

Early bye and the stacked bye at that! 3 games away from home from the first 4 and a Grand final rematch. The scores against last opponent don’t read well either, 44s against the pies and kangaroos don’t scream pick me vibes.

Can be thrown behind the ball as a defender, omitting 2021 & 2022 seasons the other 7 seasons his actual career average is 74 so expecting the 110 Mills is a reach.

JOKER

At this stage I’m on the fence.

Mills will be a massive round 0 watch on both scoring and role, scoring 100 in R0 and in the guts will force our hands given his price. I feel I’ve talked myself out of picking him but he could be that mid pricer which once missed can derail your season.

Tossing up between him and Perryman same price fits my structure. Both play round 0 and have early bye but As you mention at least we get a preview with a season proper game before we commit.

Currently Mills is training with team Eumans Tigers at D3.

Also considering Mat Roberts instead of the other 2, again need to see roles with Swans new coach and Perryman at new team.

Excellent write up & congrats on last year. Also, excellent work on the speakers circuit this pre season – loving the insights!

I still have no idea on Mills – if it were me I’d stick him in the middle based on GF /new coach etc, as you say, but I’m still not sure it happens. Jury is still out but he’s currently in for structure

gotta play your best players in their best positions surely..

Syd mid rotation should Heeney, Warner, Mills with Jordan in as a stopper & Gulden + McInerney on the wings..
