Dream Team Extra: Round 15

Who’s hit the headlines this week? What’s the fallout from the weekend? Let’s take a look at a few newsworthy snips, and maybe a bit of juicy goss, that may have an effect on your Dream Team this weekend!

Round 14 was one where you either had Captain Swan and logged a mammoth 2300 or better score or went Captain GAJ and ended up on a respectable 2100-something. Hearty congrats to all coaches who went big last weekend! There’s actually been a fair bit of DT-relevant news and twatter this week and it looks like this could be a round of mini-carnage. Let’s have a look-see…

Breaking: No Pendles

Pardon the pun in the headline, but the latest news on Scott Pendlebury is that he will sit out another week, per @JacquiReed10‘s tweet this morning…

Captain Hindsight says that his coaches should have traded, but to play devil’s advocate, we probably could have guesstimated that he’d be out for a decent stint considering that it was a fracture. Ah well, we live and lose. Actually in this case we’ve lost a bagful of points with him sitting on the bench for so long. I’m sure there are plenty of coaches who are considering rage trading Pendles and I really don’t blame you at this stage…

Dusty Dusted

One minit he come good, nek minit he go bad. That pretty much sums up the week that Dustin Martin has had. The good arrived with his tidy 109 on the weekend and the bad erupted yesterday when the young starlet and popular FWD selection made the headlines for all the wrong reasons alongside now-ex-teammate Dan Connors.

The short story is that the pair played up and Dusty’s been hit with a 2-week club-imposed suspension for sleeping through Tuesday’s training session, which obviously puts a dent in the forward line of many a coach. With cover being lean, hopefully you’ll have one of the Zork, Dicko or Elliot to bring on in place of Dusty. And let’s be honest here, any of those three are likely to return you a score well within Martin’s scoring range, so no critical loss there. However, if you haven’t got cover and you’re desperate to avoid a donut, a sneaky sideways trade to Goodes (with some risk) or a trade-plus-cash to another premo could be on the cards.

I really hope Richmond can keep their momentum going and crack the top eight by the end of the season. The next few rounds will be a bit of a test though, with quite a few first-team regulars now unavailable through injury and suspension, so we’ll soon see if there’s any fight left in the Tigers.

Boyd To Miss?

In amongst the twatter this week were whispers about the physical state of uber-premo Matty Boyd… The possession hound has reportedly not fully trained this week, prompting a few coaches to throw a possible late withdrawl out there. However, the official Twitterer of the Western Bulldogs issued a ‘should be right’ tweet to concerned DT coach @HurleyGun, so Boyd should be good to go. Sure, we know that footy clubs never lie when it comes to injury news, but make sure you have a MID EMG selected, just in case.

Not a Kangaroo lover?

Bye-bye BJ…

After punching well below his season average of 91 for the past three games, Goddard decided to make up for it by punching his tagger, Sammy Wright, as he struggled to 75 against the Kangas last Sunday eve. We knew as soon as we saw the replay that BJ would cop a sanction and two weeks it is for Mr Grumpy Pants. While still a good DT defender, the glory days of his 100+ averages look like they have passed and unless he gets a change of scenery next year (GWS?), BJ may be conceding to Lids, Scotland and Carrots as the premium options to consider for 2013. And that trio are somewhat less likely to take you on a roller coaster ride.

After dragging himself for the last few minutes of the Hawks big win over the Blues last Friday night, here are the rolling facts so far this week around Buddy… Clarko’s stated that scans have cleared Franklin of any serious hamstring damage… He was eased back into training and has picked up well through the week… All the signs are positive and, like other Dusty owners, I hope Buddy gets up this weekend. Otherwise there will be mini forward line carnage with both Martin and Franklin out. Just when I thought we’d left the donut frenzy of MBRs behind us…

Two Dolla Bah-Nanaz!!

Okay, so it’s maybe not quite the whole market shopping experience and he’s not two-bucks-a-kilo either, but Carrots has bottomed out at $373k this week and with a BE of 22, now’s the time to get on before he bolts with a predicted $20k+ price rise next week. He’ll be the most popular ‘in’ for Dream Team coaches this week, especially with Red Mist Fever (see Bye-Bye BJ… above) sitting out the next couple of rounds. The extra benefit is that Carrots should keep you regular… Well, he should keep your team regular at least, with a 90+ average for the rest of the year.

Anyways, that’s the rub for this week. Trading? Heard any juicy news bits, gossip or rumours? Got a rant or a rave? Stick it in the comments and let’s get some healthy chatter going ahead of team lists tonight. See ya next Thursday for another bout of media trawling and good luck this weekend!

Ross Lyon said on Perth Radio 6PR the other night that he has Glandular fever. I would not expect him to play again this season.

Sometimes it can take months even up to a year to fully recover from glandular fever so chances are he won’t play again this season.

      July 6, 2012 at 10:12 am

It all depends really, Glandular can have a different effect on many people. Some won’t even know they have it, while some will suffer badly (i.e. Shuey).

Team looks good…….save the 5 trades. Just look at this week, no Goddard, Martin, Pendles etc. etc. If it were week 1 of the finals and you had 2-3 trades left then you would likely use 2. Themn if the same happens in week 2, 3 GF week? You would lose to someone with the trades left to make changes. If you are not playing for the league then obviously scrap this advice.

      And apologies…great article! :)

      • Avatar

        July 5, 2012 at 2:25 pm

If you have it, absolutely. Trading Scotland when everyone said he was out for at least 4 weeks has turned out to be the biggest mistake of my season, he is going to get you a 90+ average in the backline which is invaluable.

      • Avatar

        July 5, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Heath Scotland is a way better option I believe. You know what you are going to get from him, except a mis-diagnosed injury…..He will average more than Pearce Hanley for the rest of the season.

Pearce Hanley has pumped out some monsters; 120, 102, 118, 96, 134, 120 which have been against Melbourne, Gold Coast, GWS, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and Melbourne again.

On the contrary, he scored 58, 71, 63, 80, 52, 69, 34 which have been against Carlton, Fremantle, Geelong, Essendon, Collingwood, West Coast and Hawthorn! Considering Carlton and Fremantle were in a good place when Brisbane played them, these scores are way too inconsistent to make him a good option and it is obvious that he kills sh*t teams!

His last two scores have got him alot of hype but they were against Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, however you should not forget he got 34 the previous week against Hawthorn from a full game!

        Hope this helps

Scotland is the 2nd highest averaging defender in the comp. With the exception of round 1, his worst score is 84, and best is 124. Hanley’s scores have ranged from 34 to 134. Even on recent form, Scotland’s 3 round and 5 round averages are both better than Hanley’s. Hanley only tons up when playing the bunny teams, and he only has two more games against those teams for the year.

In round 11 I had the choice of getting rid of Scotland and Pendles. Considering I only got him in in round 10 I kept Pendles and traded Scotland. Cost me the car or at least a decent chance at it. Proves DT is about 80% luck I reckon…

    • Avatar

      July 5, 2012 at 1:39 pm

yeh you are definitely right DT involves a lot of luck, but i reckon it may be about 40% luck, instead of 80%. I did the same as you. If i were to trade Pendles I would have gone to Watson (or similar), and at the moment I have lost 250 points from the trade, which will be around 300 after this week, but if you think about it, it is more likely pendles will score about 5-10 more points than Watson, so you will be around 150-200 points behind by end of season, if Watson does not get injured like he has in the past. Considering this it is actually not that bad of a loss, it just depends if you think 150-200 points is enoug h to use a trade

      Unlucky mate!

This is what I was trying to make a point about the other week. During the normal course of the season, not having Pendles playing means a rookie playing in his place so it costs around 50 – 70 points a week. To have it happen over the MBR’s means that you lose 115 a week as there wont be any cover. So in fact, it actually is doubly unlucky mate.

Kudos to you though for holding him. That would have taken balls. I traded him but was very 50/50 on the call. Clubs aren’t being honest to us fans either about injuries which makes it even worse. I watched 2 times this week Buckley say that Pendles will be right for this week only to be ruled out by the doctors. If Bucks has no idea what is happening, how the hell are we to know?

Great article Tee Tee! Love your work mate.

      • Avatar

        July 5, 2012 at 3:41 pm

        Buckley did know about Pendles!!

Official Collingwood injury list after injury was “3 – 4 weeks” but forward line coach Lappin now says “At the start, the docs said it would be six weeks and I think this is week six now.” (source

With sports-betting bigger business by the week (with the potential for corruption) shouldn’t the AFL be getting harder on misleading statements re injury?

For the rabid magpie supporters I should point out that I don’t think Collingwood are party to any betting irregularities (although I am prepared to think the worst given the slightest justification). But where there is a market with differential knowledge there is a risk of corruption.

          July 5, 2012 at 9:46 pm

To rub salt into the wound I just found my bye structure spreadsheet that I did on round 11 eve and I actually had written Pendles to Swan as the round 11 trade I planned but talked myself out of it as Pendles is a gun. lol I suppose now I have no chance of winning the car I may as well just sit him on the bench for the finals.

I agree about clubs, Scotland pisses me off more as I did pull the trigger on him. If only the Pies were in Carltons shoes they’d have to play him. Next year, if GAJ, Swan or Scotland go down for 2-4 weeks please can everyone tell me to hold steady and not trade so agressively?

    • Avatar

      July 6, 2012 at 10:19 am

Well assuming you’re going for the car like you said, there is probably 10,000 odd teams you’re up against. All with similar strategies, slight differences, but all with some chance to win the car. So on average it’s 99.99% luck.

I think the luckiest player ever to win was Impromptu in Super Coach last year. Sorry if you’re reading this mate, but you got away with absolutely murder! Which is common with all winners in the past mind you.

Which is why I like playing for the league, there is a much more diverse range of strategies and PODs in my opinion.

Dell’s decision-making and disposal was a bit sharper than Davey’s – could be a bit of competition for that spot in the forward pocket.

I am seriously considering trading J. McDonald for Sylvia. Gives me a mid/fwd link again (I still have D.Smith in the fwds) and solid bench cover in both mids and forwards for the rest of the year. I don’t have cash to upgrade McD and I think Sylvia is playing for his future in the 2nd half of the year so he looks to be finally having a crack.

Am I kidding myself? Maybe the hangover I have from last night has clouded my vision?

Mids: sexton and gibson ( hold sexton for now theres not really any downgrade options atm)
Rucks: Campbell and redden ( might get giles out and bring maric later but not sure yet :/)
Fwds: Pfierrier and Black ( could downgrade pfierrer but not a massive focus atm)

7 trades left with about $223,400 in the bank
