Selling Wood

So we will be without Joel Selwood for 4 weeks thank to the AFL Tribunal. That means he will miss 5 (includes his bye in Round 22) games over the last 12 rounds. We think he has to go… so what are our options? “Z” emailed us this article with his/her thoughts… read on!

OK.

So the AFL tribunal stuck to the idea that Joel Selwood was looking at Guerra when he made contact, making it intentional and sticking to the MRP’s ruling of a 4 week suspension. So what? Geelong misses out on one of their many talented midfielders for a few weeks? Who cares? It’s still going to be them and Collingwood at the top at the end of the year with Carlton and Hawthorn knocking on their door. That’s football.

But we don’t play football. We play DreamTeam. And for the 65,000 coaches who own Joel Selwood there is a big problem. You now have  one of your premium midfielders unavailable for 5 out of the next 12 rounds of football, including one round in the all important  DreamTeam finals. So what to do?

There are quite a few options available to us, given the depth of the midfield this year. This is also made easier by the fact that Jelwood is  currently the 9th most expensive player in the comp, the 7th most expensive midfielder and the 5th most expensive of those who have  actually played/would be in anyone’s midfield at the moment. This is good news. It means it is going to cost us very little to change over to someone who is decent. The only issue is you probably already have a lot of the premium midfielders and are wondering who you should pick to fill that 6th spot. Let’s take a look at a few of the different players that you might look at.

Pendlebury or Swan

These two are already gracing almost 250,000 midfield positions DT wide. Therefore, it is unlikely that you don’t have either one or the other. This might be an awesome time to get Swan (or get him back in if you were one of those who traded him out before his first bye) at his absolute cheapest. One can only imagine he will go back up from where he is now (397k). Pendlebury is consistent, and like Swan had a bit of a form slump a few weeks back. Not quite back into the 130’s yet but rest assured he will continue to pump them out. The problem is they have the bye this week, so if you need immediate cover then these guys aren’t for you. But if you are happy to wait a week or have other more important trades to make this week (though I don’t see how) then they might be the way to go.

Murphy. Judd, A.Swallow, Bartel, Chapman, Scotland, Gibbs, Wells, Watson & Kelly.

This list says a lot, it says mostly that the Carlton Midfield has been prolific in it’s scoring, as has Geelong. But it has one main theme. All of  these guys have byes in the DT Finals. It is important to take this into consideration when picking out a replacement for Jelwood. While only Watson has the GF off, the rest of them may cost you a game that you are required to win in order to make it to that final week of Home and Away footy for the year. Judd has been underrated this year in my opinion. I’ve had him from the start and he has produced solidly. Chapman, Gibbs, Bartel and Kelly have all been somewhat inconsistent. Chappy is also facing a bit of a slump (and he’d better pick himself back up soon), Watson is coming back from a Hammy and we haven’t really heard a lot about Wells. A.Swallow might be a good pick, a little unique but he is pumping out the points. But you have to way up the choice of having faith in these guys week in week and versus missing that potential for one of the most important weeks of the year. A lot of them also have DPP, and may be better served playing in the  forward/backline than as a permanent midfielder.

Ablett, Thompson, Mitchell, Shiels, Rischitelli, Embley, Fyfe, Priddis, Bolton

These guys are probably the ones you’ll want to look at. They are averaging high, in form and don’t have that pesky bye during the finals. Fyfe, Bolton and Thompson also have the added bonus that their bye is in one of the MBR’s, so if you are out of the running for the car (Well and truly guilty) then this is quite an attractive prospect. Ablett is killing it. Since his round 9 bye he has pumped out some massive score and is dutifully rewarding the faithful. Rischitelli has also been consistent. Thompson is doing fantastically in a losing side. Mitchell and Shiels are killing it. If Hawthorn keep trying to play possession football then these two will see even more of that little red pill in the weeks to come, and as a bonus they are not only playing Gold Coast this weekend, but also during the Grand Final!!! That has some massive attraction. Embley and Priddis are playing fantastically well, they usually do, but with Kerr getting back into form will they start to lose their impact in the centre? Also to consider is that Boyd and Ablett are the only 2 you will have to spend extra money for by trading out Selwood. And even then, it is only $10,000. So if you are needing cash for elsewhere then maybe Mitchell, or even Fyfe or Embley might be the winner in your equation.

So, things to consider.

  • When is their bye?
  • How many players will be benched from your team already during that round?
  • Can you afford one more to be benched during that round?
  • Who will they be playing over the course of the second half?
  • How is their form?
  • Will their teams performance influence their ability to get the ball (Ablett, Thompson)?
  • How much money would you like/need to make out of this trade?

Even still, there are other options than the ones I have discussed. Perhaps you are considering bringing in the 2nd most expensive player
on the DT list at the moment in Michael Barlow ($456,200)for his much awaited return to AFL?? Let us know!

go to scully definitely, he will save you 100k, instead of going to guys that are averaging about 10 more

        Thinking of doing just that
        Jellwood to Scully
        Darling to Sylvia (if playing)

Makes sense to me. Instead of just getting one premium in Gablett, you could potentially get two premiums – if Scully can keep it rolling.

I was impressed that he scored so well against the best team in the comp and his team doing nothing all day.
Agree that he is as good as gorne to GWS. Hopefully they wont drop him when they know for sure.

    • JimmyBob

      June 16, 2011 at 1:24 pm

doesnt sound too bad at all

just have to hope Scully doesnt get banished the magoos when he finally reveals that he signed with GWS a year ago :S

    • Z

      June 16, 2011 at 2:25 pm

Scully has played well in the last couple of weeks, but that’s the problem. He has only played the last couple of weeks. I thought about putting him on the list but I felt it might be a bit too much of a risk. If Melbourne’s season continues to not go so well we might see a lot of inconsistency. If you need the money though, it is definitely the time to be taking risks and trying to get ahead.

Darling to Fyfe is a good trade. Fyfe will only get better from here.

The bye is a bit of a risk, but if you can cover him during that round then that’s a good move. I already have Judd so don’t want to be 2 midfielders out of pocket for that week!

    Little story regarding Selwood.

2 of my mates that are in my league, both have him and have said all year that hes better then Bartel, I conceded this a few weeks ago after Bartel got his first of a pair of 60’s. They have been giving me plenty of stick about him.

Saturday night when the Hawks played Geelong, I was with these 2 particular friends on mine watching the game and the whole time they are saying things like “So is Bartel on the field?” “Has he been subbed off because hes a hack?” etc. Having a poke at me because I have him in my DT.

Now that Selwood is out for the next 4 weeks it’s now my turn to say

    WHERES YOUR SELWOOD NOW?!?!?!?!

Been giving them heaps since he copped 4 weeks :D

So is Bartel. He sucks these days, and Selwood smash him. Now they will trade in a better player that Bartel and still laugh at you!

          • 44chappo

            June 16, 2011 at 1:54 pm

Bartel and cooney have to be the 2 people who didnt deserve the brownlow they won. Selwood is a much better player, goes in hard and wins his own ball. Bartel on the other hand waits around the fringe of the pack for a cheap possession. Bartel is also the junk time specialist, often waiting for quater 4 to come so he can rack up cheap possessions in an attempt to look like a star player. Besides selwood has made them 1065 points in comparison to bartels 1095. Keeping in mind selwood was subbed off in first game and missed 1 week. So despite bartel playing every game he has only made you an extra 30 points + us selwood owners get the added bonus of bringing in another gun who will score at a better rate then bartel. selwood owners will now trade in players like murphy, ablett or mitchell and watch the bartel owners squirm as he struggles to reach 100 points a game. Bartels extra 30 points this season are nothing.

all you hero’s saying having bartel over selwood is embarassing.. in the end, you are the one’s who are going to have to use a trade … how are you actually capable of saying the replacement will score more.. after all bartel will take over selwoods spot in the mids and start dt slutting it up similar to past seasons… bad luck haters.

oh and 44chappo, you are a disgrace saying he didn’t deserve a brownlow. he wins his ball and gets more tackles than anyone on the geelong team. record 16 tackles in the grand final vs st kilda, remember that? ..moron.

          • 44chappo

            June 16, 2011 at 3:01 pm

Also judd didnt deserve his brownlow in 2010 and goodes didnt deserve his in 2006. Seems like they just hand them out to the people they favour which is no surprise. Judd winning another brownlow is like inducting voss into the hall of fame, it shouldnt have happened.

44Chappo you must have no idea about football. To say Bartel did not deserve his Brownlow backs this up. Also Cooney deserved his too, during that year they were the best in the competition most consistently.

If you had atleast one braincell you would have mentioned how Judd did not deserve his second Brownlow. His first one he definately did deserve.

          June 16, 2011 at 4:59 pm

chappo knows absolutely nothing about footy. its not all about the dream team points. bartel is in a class of his own, absolutely brilliant and UNSELFISH player. why unselfish? …..he is sacrifising his game for the good of the team.

unlike ablett a year ago, he doesnt sook when he goes up forward. he can take a massive pack mark, he is a great kick for goal, he can play in the back line, he can win you clearance after clearance. he is THE COMPLETE player.

yes…in terms of dream team now i would say he is inconsistent, but on the field…pfffffft actually watch a game you joke. ooooooooooh gee umm get michael evans he scored 86…gun!!!!! lol, when half his kicks were shanks.

my point? coaches dont care about dream team points either.

Hey guys so this is my situation:

Ive got $205 200 and 10 trades in the bank.

Def: Lids, Shaw, Suckling, Adcock, Heppell, Broughton, Hibberd (Lower, Poo, B Jacobs)
Mid: Boyd, Dal Santo, Gibbs, D Swallow, Prestia, Mzungu (Swan, Pendles, Jelwood)
    Rucks: Cox, Z Smith (211, M Curnow)
Fwd: Buddy, Pav, Chappy, Knights, Zaharakis, Missy Higgins, Darling (Lynch, Harper, I Smith)

Should cop a donut with zac smith being rested and then trade Jelwood out for GAJ (or should I go Mitchell?) OR should I trade 211 out for vardy so i dont have a donut but miss out on a tasty gazza deal.

The other trade I’m planning to make this week is downgrade to J Howe. Should I downgrade Darling, Tom Lynch or Harper? I’m leaning towards Lynch.

Please let me know what you think. Any feedback is appreciated.

    Cheers

    • RossFC

      June 16, 2011 at 1:35 pm

i traded out Sandilands to Joel Tippett (112k fwd/ruck) but i had petrie in my foward line, so no donut for me, but i traded swallow to ablett

    • Serenity Now

      June 16, 2011 at 2:49 pm

I am in the same boat as you ruck wise (Cox, Z Smith, Sandi, McCauley) with no Petrie to switch (11 trades and $75K) so also have the same quandry. Highly unlikely that Sandi will play before round 17 now after their bye so will mean a donut this week (Smith) and also Round 15 (Cox’s bye). So I will either 1) swap Sandi – Vardy or alternatively 2) Smith – Petrie and downgrade Sandi. Leaning towards 1).

For you your fwds and mids need upgrading and you have the cash so instead of Darling – Howe I would trade 211 – Vardy to avoid donut x2 and then you have plenty of cash to a) upgrade Darling/Lynch/Zaha to Fyfe/another gun fwd, b) D Swallow – GAJ/Mitchell aswell as c) Jelwood – gun mid, as time and preference permits.

Andrew Browne from Rich might also be a worthy option at the same price as Vardy. Don’t know much about him. Any Rich supporters that can comment on him and his job security (needed for this round and round 15 only).

I’m keeping him. I love Jelwood. After league wins only. Playing two mugs in the next two weeks and there is a general league bye in there some where. I’m looking forward to playing against a couple of my higher ranked league opponents later in the season when they won’t have him. May be risky I know, but only have 10 trades left.

this is not the worst of ideas, i too am going for a league win, am clear on top by 3 games, playing 2 spuds in the next 3 weeks so considering riding the bumps for 3 weeks, worst thing about this is that he has a bye round 22. have 12 trades left though so can cover him if i lose that first final

      • mattygee

        June 16, 2011 at 3:46 pm

A unique pick, who may hurt me for a while, but the dividends will be huge in rounds 21, 23 & 24. Nobody will have him when he’s smashing 140’s!

You cant just keep trading your mids TKOL….

Not really relevant to the Selwood thread but I do not no where else to post it 2 get advice as there is no articles such as trade talk this week. Was just looking for peoples thoughts and any advice on how to finish my team

My best team is as follows with 10 trades and 61 thousand in the bank:
Def: Shaw, Gibbs, Deledio, Goddard, Adcock, Broughton, Heppell (Lower, Puopolo, Hibberd)
Mid: Boyd, Pendles, Swan, Bartel, Dal Santo, Hodge (Jacobs, Prestia, Evans)
    Ruck: Cox, Smith (J.Tipp, Derickx)
Forward: Stevie J, Buddy, Chappy, Goodes, Petrie, Didak, Darling (Mzungu, Richardson, Callinan)

Was thinking something like a Pup/Hibberd downgrade-Tuohy and then Darling-Fyfe and then next week another defence downgrade and then Prestia-Sylvia and team will be set with Petrie going back to the rucks and Smith on bench as cover. My only real problem is that defence is the only real place where I can do my downgrades and my rookies have not completely peaked and not many downgrade options are available.

    • adr

      June 16, 2011 at 2:09 pm

If I were you, I would downgrade Hibberd and keep Puopolo for the rest of the year. Puopolo has good js because of all the injuries at Hawthorn and he’s scoring well while Hibberd was lucky to play last week against Freo.

      • d-man

        June 16, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Great article, and good to hear to hear someone acknowledging Judd. He’s been a handy unique(ish) pick for me this year, with only a 69 against Port and a 74 to spoil his good run. I was thinking that maybe Pavlich could also be a good replacement for Selwood, a he is a DPP at rock bottom price, who will only be out for the next MBR. He also bounced back from the media lashing he got after the Hawks game, and performed well against the bombers.

    • Z

      June 16, 2011 at 2:37 pm

Yeah. Judd has been extremely solid. I love knowing that he is gonna get 110ish every week. He is currently ranked 8th for total number of points this season, but he has been picked up by quite a few now. 73,000 teams have him at the moment.

I don’t know about the Jelwood to Pav option. How is your forward line looking? Is there anywhere you could squeeze him in there instead? His DPP makes him valuable, and it also makes him easier to cover during the bye, but I feel like you could get much better scoring midfielders. Don’t get me wrong, being a Freo supporter I love Pav and want him to play his best every week. He is in my team as well, but I think he is better off up front. He does have some juicy games coming up though, vs Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast. With Barlow back feeding him the football he might actually be able to bag a few as well.

    Hey guys!

Thanks for posting the article! I did the research for my own team and thought I’d email it in anyway. I didn’t expect it to go up though!

For me, I’m thinking it will be Jelwood -> Mitchell. Not 100% yet though.

          • Z

            June 16, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Hmmm. Tough question. I already have Ablett so it’s even harder to think about from the outside.

If I had the money, then probably yes. No more byes and an absolutely awesome performer regardless of how his team is travelling.

Playing well but he is playing a lot of teams over the second half that are going to choke the life out of the Brisbane midfield.

      • Milk_Lizard

        June 16, 2011 at 2:55 pm

He scores heaps from tackles. He managed 119 with only 19 touches against the roos.

        • Z

          June 16, 2011 at 3:44 pm

This was something I had failed to consider. In this case, it may not be as dire as I had thought.

    • Quanzo

      June 16, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Had him since round 5. Hasn’t disappointed bar one round and is a nice unique as you say

    • Milk_Lizard

      June 16, 2011 at 2:51 pm

I was just about to ask where the mention of Redden was in this. No league byes, is a tackle machine so can score well even when the Lions are getting smashed, can score goals, in his 3rd year after a good pre season so he’s fit and is one of the 2 lions midfielders slowly taking the reigns from Power and Black (the other being Rockliff who also deserves a mention in this article).

I’ve had Redden since round 5 and he’s only let me down twice, once was against GC where I think he took it a bit easy and clearly learnt his lesson.

      • Albert Lloyd

        June 16, 2011 at 3:43 pm

You and Quanzo should be the Round 5 Redden besties ;)

    June 16, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Was hoping to sanity check this week’s trading options based on this discussion – current team line up is:

B: Gibbs, Heppell, Goddard, Delidio, Newman, Broughton, Lower (Poupolo, McKernan, Jacobs)
C: Boyd, S.Thompson, Mitchell, Hodge, Mzungu, Pav (Swan, Selwood, Hibberd)
F: ROK, Buddy, Goodes, Sylvia, N.Riewoldt, J.Riewoldt, Darling (Tapscott, Matera, Krak)
    Rucks: Cox, Z.Smith (R.Warnock, Bathie)

2nd vs 3rd league match this week, prioritising league win. $6k in bank and 10 trades.

If Warnock isn’t named – chances are reasonable as he’s a one trick pony – I am forced to trade to avoid a donut. Ideally I’d rather wait until next week to grab Selwood->Pendles but am open to suggestion!

    Option 1: (Warnock named)
Tapscott or Matera -> Howe, Darling -> Fyfe
would trade Selwood -> Pendles next week

    Option 2: (Warnock named)
Tapscott or Matera -> Howe, Selwood -> GAJ

    Option 3: (Warnock not named)
Warnock -> Gawn, one of the above second trades, probably Fyfe

Where do you think the trades are best spent to optimise this week vs. rest of season??? Appreciate any thoughts.

Bring in Barlow, he is a gun and will get straight into score 100+’s for the rest of the year

      June 16, 2011 at 2:56 pm

I think i might roll the dice and trade Barlow for Selwood.

        Bill who

    • Uncle Fester

      June 16, 2011 at 2:57 pm

      You’re forgetting the magic number.

Barlow will go down in value regardless of how well he does. At the beginning of he year players were valued at $4300 * 2010 Average. That $4300 changes throughout the year and is now more like $3800 * average.

This means Barlow will be going down in price. Hold off until after Freo’s bye and he’s had a couple of price changes (drops).

  21. Avan

    June 16, 2011 at 3:03 pm

In all my years visiting this site I don’t think I have ever asked for help with a trade before. Helped people with plenty, but never asked for advice myself.

    BUT…

Shiels or Mitchell for Selwood? I have everyone else who’s any good besides Watson and Ablett who I don’t want.

Averages are basically identical. Mitchell the proven performer vs Shiels the new kid who seems to have a higher ceiling and will never get a tag behind Mitchell and Hodge. Who is going to give me more points out of the 11 games they have left?

At the moment I’m leaning toward Shiels as Mitchell burnt me last year when he was supposed to be out for “one week” with a strained vagina or something and ended up missing about four.

    • Zan

      June 16, 2011 at 3:08 pm

      Shiels ;)

Get Shiels.. If you watch Hawks games he is one of the guys who sticks around half mark and gets plenty of uncontested marks and follows up with a short kick and occasionally gets it back.

    • Z

      June 16, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Mate, flip a coin on that one. Myself, I am leaning towards Mitchell. I think his experience might pay dividends but overall they are going to be very similar.

    • Big Feller

      June 16, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Was that the official reason given for Mitchell’s injury?

I’m going Shiels over GAJ because I need the cash for my Darling – Sylvia upgrade next week.

I’ve written off my round 17 league match as I’ll have half the Hawks team in my side but I’m hoping to come home with a wet sail!

    • Avan

      June 16, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Thanks for the advice guys. Got Shiels ahead by a nose at the moment. Just wondering, does he have any injury history? He’s not coming back off a knee reco or anything is he?

yep good choices, Darling has topped out so use him now for the cash cow you bought him, hopefully you have sufficient bench cover. I’m doing the same trade this week.

    • Ramrod

      June 16, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Fairly standard trade. Darling has definitely peaked if you’re using him for cash (he’s staying my bench cover) an Howe is the only real rookie option atm. Also Abblet, nuff said.

lol…check Fremantles website and see under “Injuries” the time is reducing. He’ll be back and all the rookie coaches (you know who you are) will be spewing your relying on Smith or someone other then the best ruck in the land. After the Freo bye he’ll be unstoppable!!!

      • brad

        June 16, 2011 at 3:49 pm

I would still have Sandi on the bench though. I’m thinking of smith to Petrie and when sandilands comes back Petrie will be my 7th forward. is he good enough for 7th forward?

Thommo is one of my favourite players to watch, was a great unique for me last year. Though hes not surrounded by the most talented bunch hes a class act. Id get on him because not only is his run home great but his got a multi round bye which is good if your going for leagues. His mediocure sores of 70s and 80s seem gone now, which is thanks to the sub rule as hes on ground for that bit extra and will give you 95+ most weeks, go for it!!

  31. Sub Zero

    June 16, 2011 at 4:27 pm

    newbie question.

I’m not following all this “if your going for the car” mentality. Surely you field your strongest team at all times, apart from the multi buy rounds (for league win)

If all i’m playing for is a league win, are the finals included? (the last 4 rounds) Or is that it when round 20 is done?

    • Billz

      Billz

      June 16, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The finals are from round 20-24, surely if your goal is to win leagues then you not only wanna be finishing top of ya ladder but want to win the “granf final” in your league which is round 24…

    • Ramrod

      June 16, 2011 at 4:34 pm

If you’re going for the car, then the multi bye rounds count, so you need to field a strong team during these rounds too. For league only, if you loaded up on players from those teams it doesn’t matter as you could have 6 zeroes that week without issue.

Also for the car you would tend to cull your cash cows early and do your upgrade sooner, to increase the total points you’re earning. Whereas for league you’d be aiming to have the best team possible for the finals.

Hope that makes it clearer. There ARE different strategies.

Gibbs, Goddard, Adcock, Delidio, Scotland, Heppell, Duigan,
    Lower, Hibberd, Puopolo

Swan, Boyd, Pendlebury, Ablett, Mitchell, Judd,
    Swallow, Mzungu, Libba,

    Cox, Sandilands
    Smith Keeffe

Franklin, Fyfe, Pavlich, Johnson, N Riewoldt, Knights, Petrie
    Darling, Lynch, I Smith,

    10 trades no cash
i plan to get callinan for lynch/darling and maybe get sylvia for the other then bench knights
I will also trade out duigan before finals to a gun. I would now but I cant see any good defenders

He is only $299,000. That’s not alot to have sitting on your bench.
