My Team 2013: Version 1.0

The AFL Dream Team pre-season has already started for some dedicated coaches. They have been piecing together their 2013 squad ready for the kickoff in March, yes March… it is a long way away! Anyway, who are we to deprive people of a place to discuss DT 2013? It’s time to chat it up!

For subscribers to the Assistant Coach, you will be able to access the 2013 Team Picker shortly after club lists are finalised in mid-December. For now, we can use the FanFooty.com.au Fanplanner to create a team. Just sign into FanFooty and then access the Fanplanner by clicking here and away you go! Once you have completed a team, you are then able to copy and paste it in a format that will look all nice and pretty here in the comments.

Make sure you have read Calvin and Roy’s “AFL Dream Team 2013 Radar” article to give you some hints of players worth picking up next year.

PLEASE NOTE: This version is 1.0 meaning that it is before the fixture is released, trade week or the drafts.

Please be constructive with comments. Feel free to discuss players, positions, etc in the comments.

This team is a little different to others, I’ve decided to go with a set-and-forget defence and gain the potential value picks in the mid and fwd. Yay or nay?

    • Yay.
If you want to free up extra cash you could trade Vardy out to Witts/Daw.

      • +1 Daw should average more than Vardy too. Vardy is a promising player but isn’t really DT relevant

        • no.. daw will avg 0…

        • Jack and AFL_The Greastest Game! (if that’s your real name),

My first point will be that ‘Greastest’ is spelt ‘G-R-E-A-T-E-S-T’.

My second point will be that why trade out a player who could potentially average 70-odd to get a guy who’s never played an AFL game in his life, hence, knows how much he could average? I see the Hamish McIntosh trade a good thing for Vardy as he can be a Key-Position Forward, which I believe Geelong lack in. If that is the case, he could easily get 50+ goals and that can translate into lots of DT points!

          • Vardy might average a lot more than Daw, but have you forgotten about Hawkins, their Key Position Forward, won the best and fairest this year??
Won’t get 50+ goals especially as Geelong are on the slide, more like 30ish.

          • Hawkins and who else?

        • Really ‘Good_Evans’? Vardy will smash Daw in average and games played.

How is he not DT revelant? lol…

      • Or I really like the look of Tom Nicholls. Should get more game time with Hickey gone to St Kilda.

        • He could be a good choice!! how much is he?

          • You spelt Greatest wrong, and also vardy will average way more then Daw.

          • Vardy played 9 games in 2011 for an average of 47 and he scored 51 in his only game this year.

In his last 6 games for the VFL, Daw averaged 89, im not just including his last 6 games because he did awesome in them its because i can’t be bothered working out any more games, i wouldn’t be surprised if he averaged 80+ DT points for the whole year! His lowest in those 6 games was 72 and his highest was 104. He is a tacking and marking machine! So he may be able to keep up his main scoring parts of his game in the AFL.

Hopefully this helps everyone choose their fourth ruckman

          • sorry tackling*

          • Yes, in the VFL, it’s a totally different ball game in the AFL, besides, he may struggle for game time.

          • I tallied up Daw’s vfl statistics and he averaged 86. i expect that he’ll average about 65 next year and play a lot of games.

          • Also he won’t struggle for game time because there is only Goldstein, Daw and Mabon (another rookie ruck at NM). They’ll have to trial these rookies just in case Goldstein goes down with injury. They are also more likely to go for Daw than Mabon because he performed far better than Mabon in the VFL.

          • IMO Daw will play 18+ for an average of 70 and Vardy will play 15+ and average 65, so i’ll be going for Daw

          • Daw is going to be your 4th Ruck.. I’d pick him for his price and potential for games

        • I think hemetj and I have changed a few opinions on Daw, there’s no way he will struggle for game time, only 2 other ruckman at NM and one is horrible, will only play if Daw/Goldy will get injured and he has shown he can Tackle, had over 8 tackles 3 out of the 6 games i looked at (32 points right there!) He can mark, kick goals most games and collects way more kicks then Handballs. So i don’t see how people think Vardy is a better option, especially as he is 107k more expensive!

          • Have people forgotten about Petrie?

Wont it be Goldy and Petrie as a pinch hitter the same as 2012? Only way Daw gets into the team is through injury.

Daw averaged 86 last year as the number 1 ruck in the VFL side. He wont ever get the same ground time unless Goldy goes down. Lets see how he goes in the NAB before predicting what someone who has never been given a game before goes in the big time.

          • Last year North played H-Mac, Goldy and Petrie, it’ll be Goldy, Daw and Petrie this year, North like having Petrie up forward more often than not

          • How many games did HMac play? Good intention or not, Bad Advice is still Bad Advice!

Daw did not get elevated of the rookie list last year after HMac got injured. If North had any intention of playing Petrie, Daw and Goldy combo, this would have been a perfect opportunity.

Daw should only appear on watchlists! He is no certainty to get 1 game let alone average whatever over multiple games.

          • Daw will be lucky to get a handful of games, needs more than an upgrade to the senior list to see him pumping out respectable DT scores, some of the advice given in here is rather amateurish, expected a bit more indepth analysis, when do the big boys of DT get back from their break ?

          • Also he won’t struggle for game time because there is only Goldstein, Daw and Mabon (another rookie ruck at NM). They’ll have to trial these rookies just in case Goldstein goes down with injury. They are also more likely to go for Daw than Mabon because he performed far better than Mabon in the VFL.
They would want Daw to play at least some games as they would not want a first-gamer to come in and have to carry the ruck duties for a whole game. I do believe that Daw is a better choice than Vardy but it’s your choice. I’m just saying that Daw is worth it being $107,000 under Vardy’s price. But who knows. By seasons end I might be wrong.

          • LOL…. foxy’s comment was directed to yourself and Mister Evans.

Not sure how you can predict the future when you can’t even understand a post. Not even sure why I am trying anymore to be honest.

Daw has not played a game of senior AFL. He has to perform in the NAB Cup to get games. Watch the NAB then decide. Try not to give bad advice eg – 18+ games at a 70 average. Very very unlikely to happen without injury.

Best of luck with it. Just remember that all the big boys and girls frequent this site. There is a long way to go starting with the draw on Wednesday and the draft. Plenty of water to go under the bridge.

          • THERE WILL BE SOME POINT IN PLAYING DAW AS THEY DO NOT WANT A FIRST-GAMER (DAW HASN’T PLAYED YET AND WON’T PLAY ACCORDING TO YOU HUYS) TO HOLD THE RUCK LOAD FOR A WHOLE MATCH IF GOLDSTEIN GETS INJURED. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? THERE IS NO POINT IN TRYING TO CHANGE YOUR MIND. HOW ABOUT WE JUST END THIS USELESS ARGUMENT AND SAY THAT I PREFER DAW (ESPECIALLY BEING $107,000 LESS) AND THAT YOU GUYS PREFER VARDY. END OF RANT.

          • Whoooaaaa hemetj gone the capitals!!!!

          • Not sure where I have mentioned Vardy in my previous posts. I have not once mentioned Vardy v Daw. I am pointing out that you are giving bad advice. Maybe have a ‘re read.

Capitals is childish. If North were worried about a first gamer playing in the ruck then they would have elevated him last year and got games into him then. Your argument is flawed.

Daw needs to play well in the NAB to get a game. Don’t advise people he is a certain starter in October. What happens if North pick up a Seaby or a Blake in either of the drafts. A lot of things can happen so chill. Plenty of time for Daw to get into our DTs.

          • @ Hemtj. UMAD?

          • True. Fair enough.

    • I agree that Vardy may average more but don’t you think that it is a fair bit of money to have on the bench?

      • Considering the other legit options…oh wait, there isn’t any!

        • Oh wait there isn’t any??
Daniher, Grundy, DAW, Witts, Nicholls and the list goes on in ruck talent from the draft and combine this year.

    • Solid team all round matey!

Haven’t seen much love for Hodge but if he has a decent preseason then represents awesome value.

      • Haven’t seen or heard a word about Hodge in any forums so far.I’ll never be speaking of him again either #hiddengems

      • priced just under 80 as well.Could well be a keeper but if not a simple upgrade to a uber premo when the time comes

        • Absolutely mate. Hold till MBRs then bye bye Hodgey!!!

There is some awesome value in the mids for DT 2013.

          • Sandilands is a bit of a concern particularly with quite a few players already picked that are coming off LTI.Might change that to Mcevoy or Jacobs then change Daw to Grundy

      • love the unique in hodge.

as you said, i probably wouldn’t go with sandi! only played 25 games in the last two seasons so his durability has to be questioned a bit.

Different approach with a weak looking ruck set-up. I’m hoping (if I ran this type of team) my R2 rookie ruck can hit the ground running come Rd 1 and average in the 60’s+, he will be my first upgrade.

I’m not starting Buddy as I think he is somewhat too inconsistent. Swan will enter my mids as soon as Ball peaks.

    • Pretty good Peter.

Our back lines are almost identical, so you won’t get too much disagreement from me there.

Personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable having a midfield without one of Swan or Ablett, although perhaps you’re picking Pendles or Cotchin to bridge the gap this year? I don’t think they will, but plenty of others agree with you. Kennedy is a bit too handball-happy for my liking, but has shown he is capable of the odd 130+, so definitely has potential to step it up a notch.

Maric looks like he might be somewhat unique next year, which seems amazing! Good pick.

There is some concern that both Leuenberger and Gray will miss the preseason and probably a chunk of the NAB cup. Would you still pick them if you haven’t played a game come round 1? I really want both but not sure I could do it.

Johnson is too risky for mine. I got burned badly this year – brought him in as my final DEF “upgrade” and he started pulling out 40s, 50s and 60s. He and Goldstein cost me multiple leagues.

    • Very solid team. I think that if you are to go with 3 premium mid approach then one of them need to be Swan or Ablett. Not convinced about MJ but he is capable. Consistency is the concern.

We can discuss at a later date over a beer. How does after the drafts sound?

    • You could go, Gray to a rookie then Ball to Gaz. But i can see why you are leaving 250k in the bank. Same backline as mine, For some reason i don’t like Maric this year, i would rather go someone like Nic Nat or Sauce. Forward line pretty similar having 3 mid pricers there. Good start and let’s hope for a big year!!!

I should have enough cash for any substantial rise in price (Colquhoun gets taken at 12 instead of 20, etc.). Now are you going to rate my team or say that it is AMATEURISH!!!

    • 6.75/10 Good solid premo’s but…
How many games does the average draft recruit get in their first season? You have too many on the ground which i believe will leave you with several holes on any given week.

      • MAke it an 8

      • yeah agreed, that team would’ve been amazing for the 2012 season with a whole lot of GWS rookies! probably won’t quite cut it this year, but that looks like a really solid team man! maybe one of Beams/Swan/GAJ could be a lower priced premo and then you could use that money to upgrade a rookie!

    • Daw over Daniher? This confuses me.. Haha.

    • Strongly disagree with the team name…

    • You rated my team an 8, yours is nowhere near 80/10. The team name is the major flaw. You look like a cocky, capital letter using rookie. Change that then I’ll give you advice

      • Oh yeah, this team is AMATEURISH!

      • zaydb, aren’t u like 12, so you are not a pro, are you?

        • No I’m not a pro, but you can’t go around acting like the best in the world. With that team name, he is doing just that. No offense meant but that just makes you a cocky bastard.

    • Not too bad a team. I think you need to look at a couple of ‘value’ type picks to strengthen up D6 and 7 and F6 and 7.

      D. Stanley is an interesting pick. Should be solid enough to hold a premium back position for the year.

A large % of your salary is based on the Swan, Ablett, Beams trio. My suggestion is to play around with your structures. I currently have 35 teams made and will add another 10 by the time the draft comes around. The idea is to play around as much as possible to find the best fit. Don’t get stuck on pride and pick someone because you told everyone here that they must be picked. As I mentioned earlier, there is plenty of time to play and get the finished product correct.

Posting team names like that will always attract negative replies. The other thing is that DT is a game. Enjoy it. It isn’t wrong to have a different opinion or different views but it goes both ways.

      Best of luck!

    Thoughts?

    • I like this team – a few risks but a lot of potential upside.
I am still exceptionally bitter about Goldy as he cost me all my finals last year with his 24!!!
The one thing I worry about him is he has a tendency to get bent over by the big guys in Sandi and Cox where they run a train through his a$$!!!
The Duffman goes against my usual rule of not picking Ross Lyon coached players but I’m slowly warming to the idea of slotting him into my team. Between him and Hep-D at the moment.
      8.91 out of 10.

    • Very nice Freckles…. Very solid squad. I agree on Goldy… He burnt me too!

    • Great team- Knights and Lake are worries, but the bench is good, good premiums, good byes actually.
I’d say probably 9/10 or so. Best Luck in season 2013.

    Thoughts ? Ratings ?

    • Cash left $21,200.

      • Defence 9/10 not sure about the rookies
        Midfield 8/10
        Ruck 5/10
        Forward 10/10

        • Not sure about Rookies. Osborne, Colquhoun and Thurlow are three of the best rookies we have at the moment. Things will undoubtedly change, but based on the information we currently have these are three of the best rookies to select in that position. The only other one I might be considering was Lewis Stevenson. Having those three rookies, with Osborne the only one playing on the ground is a very good set up. I still wouldn’t give the backline 10/10 because there is always room for improvement, but it’s like Ridley said, perhaps there are some discrepancies in our ideas of what consitutes a perfect score. Just saying, based on the available information, those are some of the best rookies to select in that position.

    • Backs 9/10
      Mids 9/10
      Rucks 5.5/10
      Forwards 7/10
30.5/40 overall, a bit risky, but a good team. Could improve, but good.
      7.625/10

      • Well Deez, I don’t know all of Thurlow’s stats, but I know that in one game of the Champs he scored 164 DT points with 45 disposals and 13 marks, and in another game he scored 114, with 25 disposals. At this stage, he looks a good option.

    • With the amount of cash you have remaining, I think you should think about upgrading at least 1 rookie in each line to a premium. In regards to your rucks on the bench try to replace one for either Grundy or Daniher! If you decide to do this I think you will have a solid team.

    • No Clueless, you can’t buy trades. Just bribe virtual sports.

    • My thoughts are that your username seems pretty accurate…
      Baffling…

        • Hey Daniel. UMAD?

          • No mate, the thing is not everyone that uses this site is a self proclaimed DT expert, like youself. Just remember most people play this game for some fun and don’t deserve to be put down. Your next comment was much better, maybe you should’ve started with that in the first place.

      • Just experimenting with different strategies, probably not going to actually use this team, just thought it would be fun to see what it would look like with this strategy.

        • Yeah fair enough mate. I just can’t see the point in leaving over a million $$$ sitting in the bank. Huge waste in my experienced opinion…

          • It’s a stragegy I discovered by looking under Pre-Season 2013 at the top, and then under Sample Teams. It’s a bit old, but essentially what it means is that every time I upgrade a rookie, I already have the money banked, so I don’t need to downgrade another maxed-out rookie, theoretically saving me trades to use for MBR and LTI’s and such. Just something I’m playing around with. Might enter a second team with this strategy and see how it goes.

          • Interesting strategy. But one that I wouldn’t use. For the simple fact is that you will be using trades to upgrade rookies when said rookies could’ve been premium keepers scoring big for you from the get go…

          • maybe try a less extreme version of the strategy?

Theory is that Ball and Stevens will average 90 and 80. Will upgrade to Swan and Franklin ASAP. Of course if Swan plays North in the first couple of weeks i’ll start with him.

    Rookies just there.

    • Yeh Stevens will be an interesting prospect, they must be looking to play him, I’m the same ruck combo, nic nat will unleash!

    • Nice side Loobs…Knights Le Cras and Krak.. All similair types, could be a good strategy.

Personally I can’t pick Cotch as need to see him back up his year with some more opposition attention… Boyd maybe? But personal preference.

Very nice looking side for October 29th (“)>

Loving the look of this, would love to know your thoughts

    • Very nice team mate! Love the use of Bock as a forward, I think Perderson is a great option as a cheap defender he should average close to 80 IMO! If there is any weakness, I would have to say it is your rucks bench. But in saying that it could work as at some stage both will have to be given some senior experience.

    • Yeah, looking very good at the moment mate.

Only thing is that Murphy wont start pre-season training until after Christmas due to having shoulder & knee surgery. He was a lock for me, but he will be underdone and may start slow.

Our teams are very similar, only difference in premo’s are I’ve got Duffield & Swan instead of your Grimes & Murphy. Great work.

      • @daniel i know but i had to make concessions somewhere, ill sort something out
@adamant swan/duffield for grimes/murphy where do i sign up! guessing i have an extra mid pricer in there somewhere haha

  • Can I just say a big thank you to all those who are giving good advice? Blokes like Rids, Brapp, GK and a bunch of others who actually know how to play the game. It helps having good advice. My first crack at AFL Dream Team was in 2008, I had no idea what I was doing, but have been steadily improving since then. I still don’t really know what I’m doing, but it helps to have a forum to discuss these things and work them out, and I’m confident that with lots of people giving good advice we can see some solid teams (Hopefully my own included. Over 1500 comments on a MyTeam post is fantastic for this time of year, just wanted to encourage you all to keep up the enthusiasm and make this a good year for DT.

I should have enough cash for any substantial rise in price (Colquhoun gets taken at 12 instead of 20, etc.). Could you please rate my team and tell me how I could improve it.

    • I think people have already given you some ideas on how you can improve your team but you haven’t implemented them or made changes from your post 12 hours ago (apart from team name). Anyway this whole ‘rate my team’ shit is unecessary at such an early stage – the fixture hasn’t even been released yet and will no doubt change everyones structures.

    • Like the 2 millionth time I have seen you post that same thing mate. Calm down it is only October and you don’t have to post your team every 40 comments.
Nice team though, 8/10, 2 uber-premos in each line.

I only got the three premium mids but i think the mid rookies are so much better than the forwards and defence.

Would love to go Cloke to Dusty, but unfortunately fall 4k short. If Rocky is given DPP, I will swap Buddy & Cloke for Rocky & Dusty.

    Thoughts?

    • Very solid mate. I’ve got some slight concerns on Birch tho. After his AA season he got a bit of tagging attention in the finals and was pretty average DT wise and I reckon opposition teams might put abit more work into Birch in 2013 and his output could be lowered. Just a thought although he could still be very solid…

    • Very nice side Adz… Not sure on the $$$ but can you go Cloke>Kennedy, Zaha up to Dusty? Or are you sold on Zaha?

      • Thanks Rob.

I can go Zaha to Dusty in a straight swap, but pretty keen on Zaha. He was averaging mid-90’s before he tore his quad, and his injury has lowered it down to 83…seems like good value IMO.

    • What can i say but just a solid team. Well balanced good choice of premiums.

Not a really fan of Cloke (just my opinion though). Would definitely go Rockliff and Martin over Franklin and Cloke like you said.

      Overall solid :)

    • Brilliant Rob. My only concern in there is Kennedy. Yes he is underpriced but I can’t see him averaging more then 60-65 with him seemingly overtaken by Darling.

      • Thanks GK. agree to differ on Kennedy, think he is closer to 75-80 average and his mobility is a bonus.. But it is October and we have a world of change ahead of us :)

        • Yeah fair enough mate. He could well average that considering the eagles are likely to be pretty high up the ladder. Big fan of the Duffield, Redden and Wright selections. Reckon Redden will be very unique and could easily tackle his way to a 115 average.

    • Yeah, very good side there Rob.

Nice structure, I am contemplating the 5 premo midfield myself, and really like Redden as a POD.

Dont mind JJK as a mid-pricer – could potentially average 75ish (79 in 2011) and is priced at 50-odd.

If Vardy can manage a 65-70avg, you will be laughing. Nice squad.

    • Great team, love the 5 guns, also love the Redden pick!

    • rowe>witts?

    • Nice strong midfield Rob like it….Im not sold on Cloke in my side but chucked him in there for the moment…Was a big Menzel fan just the second injury has put me off see how he goes NAB if he plays…I think Darling ready to take over no1 fwd role at Weagles love his work rate and mongrel…No room for Zac? baffling ( sorry GH )..

    • No Franklin again Rainman! There are some nice looking sides starting to appear. Still wonder how much the real prices of players will differ from the estimates and DPP when DT opens. Bit of a difference in 2012 if I recall, alot of pre opening sides looked very strong, had to weaken them to fit the cap when DT 2012 opened.

  • TEAM NAME: Leather Poisoning
DEF: B. Goddard: Will keep scoring they way he has for the last couple years, DPP and will have more midfield time
    J. Grimes: Will have a fair bit of midfield time, scores well while in the pitch
    B. Gibbs: New coach, DPP and hopefully more midfield time
    P. Duffield: Scored well last year. Now no Broughton will put his score up. Averaged 30 more points without him
    B. Lake: Now at Hawthorn = +6+6+6+6+6+6+6+6+6+6 etc.
    N. Bock: Cheep as chips, will play every week and should average round about 90
    J. Pittard: Cheep as chips, will play every week and should average round about 70-75
    J. Thurlow: Cheep and could be this years Hep-D
    S. Colquhoun: Cheep and could be this years Hep-D

MID: D. Swan: Will continuing scoring very highly angina, paying top dollar for a reason
    G. Ablett jnr: Will continuing scoring very highly angina, paying top dollar for a reason
    M. Boyd: Will continuing scoring very highly angina, paying top dollar for a reason
    L. Ball: Injury interrupted star performer. He’s too cheap to pass up and should average 90+
    J. Viney: Son of a gun, cheep, should play most weeks and should score quite well
    J. Stringer: DPP; should rack up a few touches and should score quite well
    S. Docherty: DPP; came very close to debuting last year and should score quite well
    J. O’Meara: Would have been drafted highly this year, should play most games and score quite well

RUC: D. Cox: Best DT ruckman of all time, will play week in-week out and should average round 100 again
    M. Leuenberger: Cheep as chips, will play every week and should average round about 90
    B. Grundy: Will score reasonably well, will play week in-week out and will only play in bye rounds and if another ruck is suspended or short-term injury etc.
    L. McBean: DPP will only need to play bye rounds

FWD: L. Franklin: Should be in everybody’s team, will be the highest averaging forward again or near about
    S. Johnson: Playing more midfield time, losing Byrnes, Wojo and Hogan will only give him and price is down slightly because of his 1
    M. Pavlich: Back to his role of FF and should keep scoring highly again
    H. Bennell: 3rd year breakout and should be a top-5 averaging forward by years end
    C. Knights: Will play most weeks barring injury, I had Gray but having no pre-season put me off
    M. LeCras: Knee was almost ready to go if the Eagles had progressed past the semi’s, very good JS and will score almost at premo levels
    J. Daniher: Will play most weeks IMO; will score well and JS got betting because of losing Monfries
    B. Staker: Cheep, will play week in, week out and DPP
    M. Morton: Cheep, can’t see him getting dropped after his finals series and JS got better by Sydney trading Dennis-Lane

Sorry for the long post, but looking for people like Jack, X-Factor, Joseph and GK etc. to help and comment on my team

    • My god that is one epic post. Love the passion!!

    • Nice side there Aidan. Can’t disagree with most of your justifications, although not convinced Leuenberger will average 90 (will have almost no preseason and I can see him spending much more time at full forward than in 2011.

Do Swan, Ablett and Boyd have angina??? ha ha

      • With Leunberger, with Hudson’s retirement I can’t see him chilling at FF most of the game. S. Martin’s recruitment will impact his scores, didn’t think about that

    • Love the passion!!!

I’m sorry but i can’t see cox averaging 100 again this year, nic nat will get alot more ruck time so cox will get stuck up forward.

Seem like a normal team for this time in year.

P.S. Check the meaning of angina, let’s hope swan, ablett, boyd don’t have it!!!

    • Sorry, I know know what angina means, some lung diesece, it was a typo for again.

    • Spelt cheap wrong. Overall, pretty solid team in every position. Not sold on Cox as NicNat is rising fast.

      • I’m in bottom English at school for a reason.

        • Clearly, I believe what you may have meant to say was: ‘At school, I am the worst in my class at English.’ or perhaps ‘I am the worst English student in the school.’ Even if you are not very proficient at using the English language correctly, at least try your hardest. If we all try our hardest it will ensure clarity in our communication and prevent misunderstandings.

          • Ok, lets try again.

I am in the lowest level English class at school for a reason.

            Is that any better mate

    • Walker = Braap jizz lol…in for a big one u would think GH without Tippet there…will be interesting to see how all these mid price returning from injury type players go, in a lot of teams.. love the Howard and Nicnat choice havent seen them in many teams….. well done 8.75/10… ;)

      • Haha cheers Mal. Yeah gotta get around Tex! Yeah alot will depend on the preseason and how they’re all shaping up. Cheers for the generous rating ;)

    • Like it a lot Genghis… Sylvia is primed to go BANG…I just don’t have the aggots to pick him.

1 roller coaster (Broughton) is enough

      • Cheers Rob. Yeah I reckon he’ll be fairly unique and is about 15-20 points underpriced IMO. Had a very good second half of 2012 and should average over 90. If he has a good preseason he’s in!

    – This is my last trial team before the fixture.
    – I really like my uniques this year.
    – I’m surprised to not see Nic Nat in every team. I think he will flourish with the new rules to avg 100+
    – I’m not going to start the pig as i have a feeling he won’t keep his average up to his usual standard (will be m first upgrade!)
    – I really like the Broughton pick at GC, should average 90+
    – Duffield may be getting older but should average 90+ without Broughts
    – I’m going for versatility with my mid rookies!
    – I like Daw/Witts over Grundy/Vardy (Saves me 140k)
    – I know Rocky probably won’t be DP but he is there for now
    – I think Bennell should be picked by everyone as i see him averaging 100+
    – Knights is a risky pick but hopefully it pays of and he averages 75+
    – Hopefully Gray has a bit of a preseason

Thoughts on my side? Positive or constructive please, Cheers

    • Solid team mate. Eerily similar backline to the great team above yours.
For mine Knights is farely low risk if he gets named round 1. Priced at 49 and will at least be a stepping stone to a premium. Love the selection of Greeney. He could go bang and will be unique.
Basically no proven guns in the forwardline is my only concern but there’s lots of value to be had there.

    • Totally agree with your point about Swan. I’ll be looking to go Embley to Swan after about 6 or so rounds, when Embley begins to plateau and Swan starts hitting his straps.

  • Hasn’t changed much from my last draft, but this is how my team looks before the release of the fixture.

I went down from Maric –> Nic Nat, which freed up enough money to go Kennedy –> Cotch and Pav –> Stevie J.

    • One of the better all round teams I have seen. Simply awesome.

14 potential premiums including solid PODs in Houli, Redden and Treloar.

I would almost recommend sticking with this team if the draw is favourable!!

      • Thanks Rids, I’m pretty happy with it. Only thing I may change is slotting ROK into the Forwards if he is named DPP, or possibly going Nic-Nat –> McEvoy. Other than that, yeah, not much other than rooks that I would be likely to change.

    • Is that T. Mitchell in the mids?

    • Great to see Houli in there.. I really like that pick.

I had Lewis last year and whilst co sis intent he can be frustrating when he has the run with roles. A suggestion would be Lewis down to Bennell/Wright and Redden/Cotch to Gazza? But that is just me.

      Very very nice side

      • Thanks for the advice Rainman, but at the moment, I’m leaning towards keeping Lewis. He only had 4 scores below 80 last year, and only 1 below 70, and I think he can maintain this. I don’t really want to go Redden –> Gazza purely because, I don’t like Gazza (Don’t really know why. I know he’s a DT slut, but I never trust the Bald guys) and I’m a Lions supporter, so I just want Redden in there. I’ll consider it though if Cotch or Redden have a bad Pre-Season. Do you think I have enough money left over?

        • Sorry, Lewis had 5 scores below 80 and 2 below 70, just double checked my statistics. I’m still willing to keep him though, unless he has a bad Pre-Season.

I really like the idea of having the Martin brothers in my team!

    • I like it.

Hopefully Rockliff gets more midfield time next year so he can be very valueable. Not a fan of Vardy (no one start another arguement), he might have some value but definetly not as much as Leuenberger. I like the forward line it is a little bit different, but no buddy??

      Overall a well thought team.
      :)

      • Only chucked the Berger out because he may not be a starter for Rd 1 and will use the link between Daniher and Martin if Vardy underperforms.

Huge value in the forward line this year means I’m finding it hard to slot Buddy in. I think Robbo will benefit under Mick and hopefully a soft Carlton draw. Cloke couldn’t go much worse than last year.
Other guys should go well and I want Staker for the D/F link to Bock / Lake and Broughton.

    • Yeah Stef Martin is interesting. Him in the fwd’s and Daniher in the ruck gives great flexibility. But it appears his good scores (82 average last year and 3 consecutive 100’s this year) came when he was #1 ruck, which he won’t be unless Berger goes down again. I assume you are worried about having four Lions in your team, because Berger is a way better option for slightly less than Vardy. I’m worried about Vardy’s JS with HMac now at the cattery.

      • People are aware that reports out of Brisbane are saying that Luey wont be joining training till after the New Year. If this is the case, then don’t expect Luey to start the year with a bang, if he starts at all.

Vardy in his come back game played as a forward and scored 58 in 3 qtrs of football. This kid can play and only injury has restricted him. I have mentioned this before, I expect HMac to help Vardy rather than hinder him. HMac hasn’t exactly been the most reliable player over the past years either.

        • From the Lions website (15/10/12)

We were always planning to modify Leuey’s pre-season program, as you do with someone so big who does a lot of jumping. So even prior to his Achilles injury we had planned to take him through a modified season last year and a modified pre-season this year. Unfortunately in Round 3 over in Perth he sustained the injury, and so went through a long rehab process. So off the back of that, he’ll be ready to start pre-season, but tendon injuries are a little slower to heal than muscles, so it will be modified.

          http://www.lions.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/5085/newsid/149691/default.aspx

          • Hmmm well that’s neither great nor bad. At least he’s doing some sort of pre-season. I wonder if they are trying to put a positive spin on it by saying it was going to be modified anyway.

        • My logic was that with Hawkins and JPod plus a resting HMac/West, there isn’t really room for another tall up forward. You may be right though.

        • He definitely needs to be monitored. Represents awesome value but people need to think of a plan B just in case. These sort of injuries seem to linger. Only the club doctors will know the extent of the injury. Nasty injury for a ruckman though. Plus when the club says the player will be on a modified program in the preseason it always sets off alarm bells. If he is right to go should be back late in the NAB Cup for a couple of games. If he plays no part then maybe plan B is the way to go :-)

yeah have to be attractive to fit in to this menacing team. with the exception of all rucks and mitch morton, mitch morton is very ugly.

tried to shy away from mid pricers but i think Gray offers great value and luey will feature in about 80 percent of teams so he is a given. was a bit sceptical on fyfe but he is just a jet and i love him so he features.

i cant pick players i dont like so thats pretty much the basis of selection to be honest.

    • Not a bad team. You need money in the bank. I usually try to leave at least $20,000, that way if a player goes down with an injury, and thier value falls, you can still get someone decent for them. Hodge, Embley and Ball could all do well, but in my opinion, if you must go with them, pick 2 of the three and downgrade the other to a rookie. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on all the best rookies. Same with the forward line, it’s okay playing one or two rookies on the field, and if you downgraded, say Cloke, to a rookie, you could upgrade two of those mids into Uber Premos, just my thoughts.

  • How many people are having headaches about whether you should pick Broughton or not. He has so much talent when he’s not in pockets and now he is at GCS. I think that I may leave him out a first and if he is averaging 100 odd in the 6 rounds then I’ll get him in as a fwd so that I can have a dpp link with Bock, Stanley and Staker.
Thoughts. I just don’t quite trust Broughton as yet.

    • As Griff said in his article, you do yourself a disservice by not at least considering him. He has the potential to score well and must be monitored in the pre-season, but personally I think that, for his price you would have to be almost certain that he would improve, there can be no speculation. In my opinion, if he is not performing in the Pre-Season, he is too much of a risk.

    • Now that he’s a DPP (assuming a good preason and NAB cup) he is a lock for me. No more Ross Lyon and should be able to do what he likes at the Suns. Lockity Lock Lock Lock!!!
ps. Very unlikely Stanley will be a DEF/FWD…

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I’ve gotten extremely unlucky with the byes. R13 (Mids) – GCS/COLL/ADEL – At the moment I have 6 players in my midfield from those teams combined!!!! Beams, Swan, Ablett, Ball, Crouch and O’Meara. How unlucky can I get.

    • It’s Okay Hemetj. There will be plenty of time to change things. Who says that the squad you have now will be the one that you have when Round 1 Lockout commences. Just take it easy. Having Beams, Swan and Ball was always likely to cause trouble with the byes. You just need to consider other options. Chin up mate.

  • I have 6 players in the r13 bye from my midfield.
Beams, Swan, Ablett, Ball, Crouch and O’Meara. Who should I get rid of and who for.
I also have $43,200 left and have Graham and Cotchin as my other mids.

Obviously a long way to go, but any advice on how it’s looking currently? Any advice is appreciated

  • Anyone looking at Shuey? Could be the Dangerfield of 2013 with a handy bye. Now that there’s 10 Mid spots and 30 trades he might be worth looking at.

    • shuey could be a real smokey and get his average up well over 100. If my memory serves he smashed out a few massive scores in 2012. With nic nat in the ruck more often than not be lots of ball for the WC mids to feed on. could be a great choice. Gaff in the same boat i think……..

  • My first draft for the One Win Wonders is as follows:

Def: Goddard, Gibbs, Duffield, Lake, Bock, Terlich (Goodes, Colquhoun)

Mids: Ablett Jnr, Cotchin, Bartel, Hartlett, Ball, Lonergan, Wines,O’Meara (Crouch, Viney)

    Rucks: Maric, Luenberger (Daw, Grundy)

For: Rockliff, Broughton, Knights, Gray, Franklin, Kennedy (Macaffer, Menzel)

    Leftover $$: $219,400

I will be using some of that cash to make a few changes around NAB Cup etc, and I know of a few changes I may make between now and the start of the season.

    Look forward to some feedback.

    • I’m a fan of having some mid-priced Fwds to cover for the seemingly bad rookie options up there, but I think having 3 mid-pricers and 2 rooks is maybe going one too far. I reckon there’ll be about 3 decent Fwd rooks starting round 1, so in my opinion swap one of your mid-pricers (Gray may miss the start of the year, so probably him) for Staker. I’d use that to upgrade Ball to a premo and swap Bartel for SJ.
