Mzun-gone: Tendai Mzungu injures knee

Fremantle’s Tendai Mzungu was on track to be one of the most selected players this season in AFL Dream Team. At under $100K and named as a MID/FWD, he was the backbone of a lot of teams with many people starting him. Now after Ian Callinan‘s torn bicep last week, we seem to have a “DPP Curse” as Chook puts it.

Mzungu was helped off the ground in the first quarter of the NAB Challenge match against the Eagles and taken straight to the rooms. The Dockers confirmed on Twitter that it was a knee injury and he is off to have scans.

Fingers crossed there is positive news… but it’s probably now time to get Tendai out of your Dream Teams for a serious structure reshuffle. Sucks because he was having a smashing pre-season with scores of 77 and 78 in the last two weeks.

To find some silver lining here, if he is out for a while, Nick Lower will be a dead certainty to be upgraded from the rookie list.

  • dainggg that is not gud
    thanks for letting every noe

  • love u warnie
makin reinforcements to my team coz of dis

  • yep thanks warnie loving your stuff
Lower will be dead cert if he is gone.

lower has shown too much pre season not to be upgraded with only other option Clancee pearce who should get chances through the season

  • FMDT

  • im swewing

  • well that craps all over my team structure
    ideal replacements under 100k?

Heard that another roo has gone down, will this help atley get a string of games at the start?

  • FMDT

To Smith or not to Smith?

  • Who is this guy?? – I never even had him in my team!

    • hahaha, yeah man you’ve locked in callinan and never looked back, right?

      • He could be used as a DPP player switching around FWD/MID if you’re going for the car.

  • bad news for freo and the player himself but makes DT more interesting. 9/10 teams, who knew what they were doing, would have had him in so now it creates more uniques between teams.

an ideal mid season target if the injury is a few months. silver lining??

  • Brodie Martin was suspected of doing an ACL last week, and is now a chance to play round 1. No point speculating over it until scans confirmed the extent of any damage done.

But you should all get rid of him anyway, just in case ;).

  • From Freo Twitter:

“Tendai Mzungu injury update: following scans it appears to be his left medial ligament and some bone bruising”

    • left medial….anyone know how long that keeps someone out for?

      • 8-10 weeks is being mentioned abit

        • Need to find a suitable replacement for Mzungu and Darling is Locked and loaded :D

      • Depending on the grade it could be anywhere from 3 weeks to a few months!

      • Medial injury the best worst case for a knee. Mine took around 6 weeks when it blew out.

      • Campbell Brown missed 3 or 4 with a medial last year.

        • At season’s end the injury is normally about a month for a mid-grade if team playing finals, but to start the year most teams will be overcautious. He won’t be rushed back.

  • I was at the game and mzungu didn’t look good. Very surprised if he makes it back for round one.

On a more positive note darling looked the goods. Defintely in the best 22 imo. Gaff must be close to a pick as well.

  • hope i didnt curse him….i moved lower in yesterday in hope

  • will have to move krak into mids, then maybe pick up darling. unless isaac smith play’s in which case i can just do a swapsies

    • Maybe Viv Michie ?? whats he doing?

      • i read viv michie was subbed off at half time so maybe he’s not the right choice.
ive done the same….moved krak into the mids and now it seems a choice between i smith and darling….i have smith atm but i got a feeling the hawks wont pick him in round 1

  • Wowsers!!

any help is appreciated in light of this tragedy!

    Who to bring in?

Higgins – leaving $0 in bank
    Fyfe – leaving $60k
Robbie Gray – (He owes me from last year – really doubt i could do it again!) $60k in bank.

    • Higgins starred today apparently, go with him.

how did Lower and Michie go today?

Did Sandi play? how did he go vs Coxy?

      • from what im reading around the place (and this is by far not a professional opinion) sandi played well….no mention of cox….michie was subbed off so thats not a good sign…..lower could be the rookie elevation if mzungu’s injury is long term

        • doesn’t need to be freo already heve 2 spots available moribito and hayden

        • I dont know why anyone was even worried about Lower being elevated, there were always 2 spots with morabito and hayden on the LTI list (now possibly 3 with the muzzzz out), and through the pre-season only 4 of the rookie listed players have had a run, two of whom were insignificant nothings ( hamish shepheard and casey sibosado) and the other two who may well both get elevated in clancee pearce who played last year, and of course Lower who has been the best of the rookies by far! LOCK AND LOAD!

      • cox didnt play

        • went to the game…Cox did play – first half.
          Sandi was great.

        • Subbed off at half time, why would you comment and say he didn’t play if you got no idea

    • Robbie Gray was back to his best but they did only play against GWS who didn’t put up a massive amount of resistance.

  • Off topic…will we see all the final team lists prior to having to lock our teams in?…1st game is a Thursday..does this mean 1st lock out will leave us only knowing 2 teams?

    • First lockout will only lock Carlton and Richmond players in or out of your team. There’ll be a second ‘proper’ lockout on the Friday, so we’ll know all the teams.

    • Yep clubs wont name a 22 for sunday games Wednesday night and why would you?

      • if sunday team 22’s come out on saturday, and you have attley, hibbard, darling etc in mind you will have to lock em in not knowing if they will play 1st round…

  • I will keep him if it is a month or less. He is worth it and have plenty of cover.

  • I know all this stuff about Jacobs, Callinan and Mzungu is horrible, but did someone say DOWNGRADE TARGETS?

    • I hate to admit it, but I am one of the callous people that thought ‘downgrade target’ straight after ‘poor bastard’.

  • The worst part is these injurys are happening in nab CHALLENGE matches!

    • Better to happen know than 2 weeks intot he season..thebigpecker must live close to me, cause i said downgrade targets….^_^…

  • freo twitter says not that serious. bone bruising and left medial ligament…

    • google says this about it…

      Prognosis of a MCL tear

With appropriate management, most patients with a minor to moderate MCL injury (grades 1 and 2) can return to sport or normal activity within 2 – 8 weeks.

  • Wow who would of thought an injury to a player that has never played a game of afl could throw so many dt coaches into disarray,to dpp or not is now a question with the lack of dpp bench options that are likely to play rnd 1 ,cant commit to a structure now till teams are named mzungu was a sure thing now we are hoping guys like buckley, smith and hibberd get named…..gonna be a waiting game to get it right then most likely a mad rush when teams are named….gotta love dt curveballs everyday

    • assuming mzungu is gone… i just completely restructured my team… scary when i thought it was pretty much set….

    • not the hugest deal… just chuck Krak in the mids… I had both in the mids before this weekend to provide heaps of dpp options fwd/mid but now just have Krak’s with maybe Conca replacing Mzungu.
Downgraded Buddy -> Stevie J and now only have $5k

    • hibberd should play. but I already had him………

  • Need a replacement, help.

  • Can anyone put a timeframe on Bartels Concussion?

  • Great call farkwhitsunday.

    Champion sledge.

somebody dropped out – now have a free spot available for anyone that missed out on the official DT Talk leagues.

  • warnie was right about more injuries coming round the corner!

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Not Mzungu now my fwd/mid mpp is GONE!! did you hear? GONE!!!. My only hopes now are Isaac Smith and T Schneider. Hawthorn to the rescue! :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

  • Just use Callinan as a DPP FWD/MID and you’ll be fine.

  • Davis or Yarran?

    • That is a tough one. Davis will not get his 09 form back but he should improve 70-75 odd.(If playing)

There has been a lot of talk about Yarran but I am not to sure.

If anything Yarran could be a pass of the round 23 Bye

Predict: Wait till teams are named.

    • Yarran! Has trained all preseason with the backs & has looked at home in NAB games. Leon at your peril

  • Can someone help with my mid bench? I had Mzungu, but now it’s Smith, Wallis, Hibberd. Is that alright? I’ve got 2 DPP’s, but i dunno about Wallis.

  • More drama…. Irons has injured his leg. It says it under the preseason talks; tough start for Folau as Power belts Giants. Near the top off this page. Go into it, go to the bottom and it says injures Power: Irons(leg)
