Dane Swan: Deck of Dream Team 2011

Name: Dane Swan
Club: Collingwood
Position: Centre
Bye Rounds: 7 & 13
2010 Average: 123
2010 Games Played: 22
Predicted Average: 127

Why should I pick him? Because he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest DTer of all time. Last year had score 100+ a massive 86% of the time and cracked the 119+ mark a nice 64% of the time. Swannie is also a lock in captain and when you have a guy who can pump out 150’s and the occasional 160 he is a bloody jet and a must have in any team. Another reason is his durability, Swannie will play hurt and will always tough it out (unlike some of the other pussy’s), he hasn’t missed a game in 4 years and with a low score this year of just 83, he is a gun and is un-taggable.

Why shouldn’t I pick him? He’s going to be very expensive, but like anything, you get what you pay for. Some people will avoid Swannie, waiting for him to drop in price. This will happen at some point in 2011, but do you really want to muck around waiting for what might not even happen. HELL NO!

Deck of DT Rating. ACE – How can he not be? He is a lock in captain! And with bye rounds in 7 and 13 he has time to warm-up… rest… fire again… rest and then play the rest of the year smacking you out huge numbers.

  • Ahh Swanny. With Ablett having byes in Rd 1 and 7, then Swanny is your ultimate premium mid to start with. If you were looking to pick him up later – *when* his price drops, yeah right – then he is a decent upgrade target as he has the last 7 games straight. The ‘Pies are one of the first teams to finish their two byes. That is a positive about Collingwood players with this fixture.

    • Wow, went a controversial pick with your first post for the season! ;-)
Just kidding, good to have this feature back!

      • You cant not start with him.

His price might drop a little bit but hes still one of those players that will require 2 or 3 rookie upgrdes to buy. Id rather start with him and pick up pick up the likes of Selwood or Monty who will drop a lot further.

  • Absolute must-have. Next year Swan will be the only logical guy you’d give your (C) to in Round 1 and leave it there, and he wont be much more expensive than he and Ablett were this year.

Not sure how Ablett’s move to GC will impact his scores but you wouldve thought the only way is down (given they likely wont protect him as much as the Cats did) – maybe by as much as 10-15ppg and his scores wont be as consistent either, which means Ablett’s price should be more volatile…

So until we can all pounce on Ablett in Rd 10 (after he’s had his 2 byes and hopefully a tasty price drop), Swan can be captain for all by 1 of those rounds (Rd 7). Yum.

  • Let the Pre Season DT Talk begin! Swannie is a must for Round 1. Mr Un Taggable will be ripping it up from the start! those who avoided ablett wiaitng for his price to drop may remember that did not happen until a fair way into the season, and Swannie will be no different! Nice write up Vin!

  • Agreed that Swan is a lock for Round 1, I’ll be looking at picking up Ablett after the second bye. I think one of the biggest questions is how many Gold Coast rookies to start with. Considering they will hopefully make a lot of money, but with the two early byes…

  • Great to have you back guys!

Swan’s currently locked in my team, although I think Pendlebury is going to really step up this year, both in DT terms and actual performance. No way I’m taking both from the start though, even with three subs. I don’t think he will impact Swan’s scoring, but they both have great durability and Pendles has more upside and great consistency in his scores. That said, I’ve been burnt in the past for not paying up for the absolute quality premiums…..

    • Had both Pendles and Swan from the start last year and will be doing so again this year. At present my thinking is having 3-4 premiums in my mids to start this year so 2 of them being magpies would be a down side except I am a magpie supporter and the world is bloody wonderful at the moment so why not!!!!!

  • Locked and loaded. Gonna keep him the whole season. My other premium midfielder will probalby be Lenny Hayes or Matthew Boyd. Great write-up Calvun, keep them coming.

  • Great start to the preseason boys, hav u been doin some altitude training in the US too?

One question which has been bugging me ever since Palmer did the dirty on him is if people are going to go for Barlow in 2011? I’m guessing he will come up eventually in the deck of DT but just wanted to get an idea of what people r thinkin and wat we think his price might roughly be?

Obvioulsy we all luv the bloke but i still think it would be a ballsy move to go for him expecting him to pump out the same numbers as last year.

    • Do you reckon Barlow will be less then 400k because he missed the last 8 games for the year and 9 overral?
If we is less I might jump on as he could be a unique pick because a lot of people would worry about his injury.

Ps. Good job Vin. Swannie a lock as always.

      • Barlow will be priced at his average- played 13 games, so no discount. At an average of 109.8, he’ll be priced at 460-480K.

        • He is great but as others are saying too risky at that price for me……in saying that I hope the bloke averages 110 and has a great season….

  • Im not goin to pick him…my boy goddard can be captain! risky

  • 100 % swanny all the way

  • I have one concern with Swan this year…
Swannie is one of the most rotated players in the AFL and now with the capped number of rotations his influence may be affected…
    What do you guys think?

  • Gun, jet, slut, untagable, lock in captain. But I still feel dirty picking him, because he plays for Collingwood.

    • Yes, we should stack up on Lions players. Lets see some quality Lion players, umm … Rischitelli, your best player, but oh yes he’s gone. How about Sherman? Quality player, oh but he’s gone too isn’t he? Brennan, maybe? Ooh yeh, left didn’t he? ….. How about Fev? But I heard the years on his Lions contract aren’t the only years he looking at. ;)

  • Swannie is the perfect pick for first cab off the rank…….great write up look forward to whats to follow………..So does GAJ hold the number 2 spot????? I reckon no, Goddard to come next by a whisker!!!

  • my concern is that with swanie the new interchange rule may effect him?
swan also played in the international rules where they cap the rotations to 80 this could be an indicater of how well he will go with the new interchange rules.Any idea what he avg dt wise in the international rules?
another concern is we are buying a player that will finish his byes early, thus having to cover his byes?

Do you think someone else like montagna or boyd could reach swans heights of avg 123+?

  • Even if Swanie only played on one leg and had one arm tied behind his back in 2011 I would lock him in. GUN!

  • Maybe an upgrade…….

    • so who is gonna be your captain untill you free up $500K upgrading players?

      • yeah! Need Swan. No excuse to not start him. I’ll have Boyd, Chapman (He seems over his injury woes now), Montagna & Goddard as back-up captains too :)
