Gary Ablett at Gold Coast: Do we still pick him?

Gary Ablett at the Gold Coast Suns... do we still pick him in AFL Dream Team?

Gary Ablett at the Gold Coast Suns... do we still pick him in AFL Dream Team?

With the news today that Gary Ablett has joined the Gold Coast Suns, we now need to think about one of the biggest Dream Team players in the game… do we still pick him?

My simple answer is no.

I feel that he won’t have the same protection that he had at the Cats, as he won’t have the likes of Jimmy Bartel, Paul Chapman, Joel Selwood, etc around him to 1, take away attention and 2, feed him the ball.

His role is likely to be different. More will be expected of him. This could be a good thing for Dream Team, but he will still need to get the ball.

I can see him being a ‘cash fowl’ as Roy puts it. At his price (will be priced at his 2010 average of 119 points per game), he will be the second most expensive player in the game. I can’t see him maintaining anywhere near that average, especially early on. It will be a big 5-6 week learning curve for the Suns, and we wont see the smashing scores that we’d expect from Gazza.

Oh, and Gold Coast have the bye in Round 1. Another downside considering a lot of our benches will be GC players (will be hard to cover him for the first week).

On the other hand, he will be the focal point for the side. Their main go to guy in the midfield where a whole lot of possession will go through. He isn’t easily tagged, but will that be different at a new club? Hmm… time will tell there.

I think it will be far too risky to be picking the nude nut early on, but once he hits his straps, he will be a bargain/upgrade target worth considering!

  • Hmm… I wonder what ‘tkol’ thinks?! ;)

    • Will you eat a piece of humble pie if your wrong? :)

    • Long time no speak mate hope all is going well.

The Geelong DT Era is OVER!

      No more Sweet Merciful Jesus
      * Bartel

I think we have to watch these blokes slide and initially build with other guns!

Fotty is always changing and so it DT!

      • Welcome back TKOL! Congrats on a great season, was very jealous of your team

  • Two words: Team Swan.

Would not of picked him up anyway!

  • two words: team nahas

  • if hes cheaper then this year i would pick him, and the good thing about him not playin in round 1 he will have the rest of the year to play downside if he gets injured like reiwoldt did i know there not in the same possie but reiwoldt being injured hurt heaps of people.

and he will be hte main guy to go to with the young guys getting the ball to him, and rischi there to give him the ball too.

i think ill decide next year for sure to get him or not and ill let you know,

im keepin my eye out on some swan districts players, also coniglio is another young gun that will come and play afl soon for sure, hes still in year 12 and kicked 4 goals in the grand final against claremont i was at that game great game for young and up and coming players :), also krakouer too.

you guys going to do a players to watch out for next year? well at the start of next year?

    • As for price, he will be slightly more expensive than 2010. In ’09 he averages 118.7 and then in ’10 he averaged 119. So much of a muchness.

      • ohh okay so pretty much similar just a bit more, so yeah it could be like one of those gambles bit like the swan vs ablett this year, you either get ablett or you dont.

  • Here’s a template midfield for 2011:

2 Tip-Top Players- Swan, Joel Selwood, Montagna, Bartel, Pendles, Hayes, Dal Santo, Ablett
3 Mid-priced players- Judd, Burgoyne, Brennan, Adam Selwood, Priddis, Hannenbery, Pav, Rich, Shuey.
    4 Rookies.

    My likely mids- Swan, Hayes/Selwood/Montagna
    Judd, Hannenbery, Shuey

  • hey Warnie when will you be starting the preseason talk

  • Although he is playing for my new team!
There is no way EVER you can start with Gazza in your starting line up
Swanny = YES, GC Captain = NO

  • Might trade him in after aroudn 10 rounds, might have either, a: Proved his worth, or b: dropped loads in value.

  • Do many of you boys play the nba stock exchange in the dt offseason? Opens this week… Keen to make a joint and league with a cash prize if there’s enough interest!

  • Talking all things Gold Coast, I have it on pretty good authority Robbie Campbell will be signing for a year on $300k, apparently is as fit as ever and the Hawks only offered him $80k. Bargain ruck !

  • Do traded players get some sort of a discount, like injured players?

  • If VirtualSports rightfully name him as a dual position player midfield/forward i’ll pick him up.

  • Dane Swan scored 141 DT points in GRAND FINAL…what a GUN! PIES ARE CHAMPS!!!

  • It’s between him and Swan. I’ll be lucky if i can fit both in. I can’t see a reason not to get him. Maybe cos he won’t have Selwood, Bartel, Chapman, Kelly, Corey etc. helping him out like said earlier. I reckon another Gold Coast player maybe worthy of a pick up, is ex-bulldogs player Jarrod Harbrow.
