Fry’s Cash Cows – Rd. 19

Rookies aren’t a high priority, but that didn’t stop Fry from digging through all the relevant cash cow numbers ahead of the fantasy finals!

Congratulations if you’ve made it this far into the fantasy season and still have something meaningful to play for! The fantasy finals have arrived, signally just one month until season 2019 is done and dusted. A lot of completed teams will look to shuffle premiums rather than target youngsters in the coming weeks, but as we’ve seen all season long, making money from rookies can help strengthen our sides while giving us a backup plan if a late change rears its ugly head. The options are drying up which means you have to pay up for most of the reliable cash cows, but there are still some out there…

Feel free to comment your questions below, but the general rule of thumb is no mention for a player = not worth talking about.

DOWNGRADE TARGETS

Defense

Hugh Goddard, Blues ($170K, DNP, BE 41)
Francis Watson, Eagles ($231K, 56, BE -4)
Joel Garner, Power ($231K, 51, BE 20)

Midfield

Josh Deluca, Blues ($252K, 58, BE 24)
Doulton Langlands, Saints ($229K, 75, BE -14)
Will Snelling, Bombers ($251K, 64, BE 5)
Rhylee West, Bulldogs ($231K, 53, BE 20)

Ruck

Jordan Sweet, Bulldogs ($170K, DNP – VFL BYE, BE 26)

Forward

Hayden McLean, Swans ($243K, 53, BE -7)

Most of the players who made their debut in Round 18 backed it up with another solid performance last weekend. Of course, that now means that they come at a higher cost with Doulton Langlands and Hayden McLean shaping up as the two best options. I’m not ready to give up on Will Snelling, but the Bombers might have other ideas after an average game against the Suns. The similar could be said for Joel Garner who helped 7.0% of fantasy coaches by returning to Port Adelaide’s side.

Rhylee West helped himself to 14 touches and a 50 in his first AFL game, but might also face the axe if Toby McLean returns. After two weeks on the sidelines, we could see the return of Hugh Goddard who suffered a fractured cheekbone in his first game of the year while Francis Watson will only be around until Hurn returns which should happen this weekend. Josh Deluca and a quick cash grab via Jordan Sweet are your last resort moves.

HOLD STRONG

Defense

Noah Answerth, Lions ($375K, 87, BE 35)
Jordan Clark, Cats ($487K, 88, BE 69)
Xavier Duursma, Power ($523K, 73, BE 80)
Sydney Stack, Tigers ($518K, 78, BE 83)

Midfield

Brett Bewley, Dockers ($335K, 45, BE 43)
Michael Gibbons, Blues ($460K, 106, BE 38)

James Rowbottom, Swans ($428K, 61, BE 47)
Bailey Smith, Bulldogs ($432K, 94, BE 65)

Sam Walsh, Blues ($663K, 89, BE 114)

Ruck

Zac Clarke, Bombers ($334K, 69, BE 20)
Reilly O’Brien, Crows ($743K, 114, BE 102)

Forward

Shai Bolton, Tigers ($500K, 77, BE, 51)
Mabior Chol, Tigers ($361K, 44, BE 58)
Oliver Hanrahan, Hawks ($320K, 31, BE 35)

Will Setterfield, Blues ($501K, 89, BE 63)

Middle tier defenders came to the party in Round 19, with most of the popular picks scoring in the 70-80 range further cementing a spot in fantasy sides. In an ideal world trading out the likes of Sydney Stack and/or Xavier Duursma to a ‘premium defender’ would be at the top of the wish list, but sometimes other injury issues/lack of form surround others blocks that plan. It’s fine to consider holding Sam Walsh for the remainder of the year, especially given Carlton’s recent form while his teammate Michael Gibbons has a new lease on life in our squads following three straight great scores.

If you still find yourself holding onto Reilly O’Brien, there’s no reason to consider a trade away unless the Crows pull a selection shock by bringing Sam Jacobs back into the fold. He does still have a clash with Brodie Grundy on the horizon, but it’s hard to ignore the stellar form he’s been in recently. Zac Clarke shouldering most of the ruck duties for Essendon means that he can stay for a bit longer too. Carlton’s newfound mojo has also breathed life into Will Setterfield‘s fantasy game, with his recent numbers emulating what we thought he was capable of at the start of the season. He and Tigers duo Mabior Chol and Shai Bolton are allowed to hang around, but I wouldn’t go fielding any of them with confidence.

TIME TO GO

Defense

Chris Burgess, Suns ($206K, 52, BE 15)
Corey Ellis, Suns ($354K, 37, BE 44)

Griffin Logue, Dockers ($329K, 34 BE 67)
Isaac Quaynor, Magpies ($335K, 56, BE 34)
Callum Wilkie, Saints ($430K, 58, BE 73)

Midfield

Tom Atkins, Cats ($327K, 49, BE 61)
Oskar Baker, Demons ($376K, 30, BE 71)

Dylan Clarke, Bombers ($438K, 59, BE 67)
Jackson Hately, Giants ($392K, 67, BE 50)

Nick Hind, Saints ($285K, 57, BE 45)

Ruck

Darcy Fort, Cats ($253K, DNP, BE 14)
Archie Smith, Lions ($242K, DNP, BE 24)

Forward

Liam Baker, Tigers ($476K, 52, BE 98)
Zak Butters, Power ($399K, 62, BE 56)
Jarrod Cameron, Eagles ($313K, 28, BE 52)
Ian Hill, Giants ($275K, 37, BE 30)

Nick Larkey, Kangaroos ($334K, 56, BE 44)
Mitchell Lewis, Hawks ($423K, 48, BE 55)
Gryan Miers, Cats ($432K, 54, BE 70)

Connor Rozee, Power ($444K, 58, BE 77)
Tyson Stengle, Crows ($232K, 58, BE 13)

A foot stress fracture in Iassac Quaynor‘s foot isn’t the news 8.0% of coaches wanted to hear with the young Magpie set to miss multiple weeks. Along with Quaynor, there’s a chance that Griffin Logue will find himself dumped, potentially hurting some coaches bench stocks. The same can be said for Oskar Baker who only managed a 30 in his ‘triumphant’ return to the senior side and will likely be sent packing to VFL level.

With Geelong setting their sights on their finals campaign, don’t rule out some of their youngsters being rested this weekend including Tom Atkins who hasn’t been performing like fantasy coaches would have liked lately. Gryan Miers could find himself in that similar boat, however, his fantasy numbers haven’t been as dire as Atkins’. Other forward who could be facing the axe on the eve of the fantasy finals include the likes of Jarrod CameronTyson StengleMitchell Lewis, and Ian Hill. My gut says all of them will go, with Lewis may be the lucky one to survive.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

James Rose, FWD, Swans ($330K, NEAFL score: 153)
Corey Lyons, MID, Lions ($170K, NEAFL score: 140)
Nick Shipley, MID, Giants ($170K, NEAFL score: 139)
Peter Ladhams, RUC, Power ($216K, SANFL score: 112)
Kyle Dunkley, MID, Demons ($196K, VFL score: 106)
Willem Drew, MID, Power ($402K, SANFL score: 101)
Chayce Jones, MID, Crows ($246K, SANFL score: 93)
Josh Corbett, FWD, Suns ($268K, NEAFL score: 91)
Michael Knoll, RUC, Swans ($170K, NEAFL score: 91)
Lachie Hosie, FWD, Kangaroos ($170K, VFL score: 82)
Jye Caldwell, MID, Giants ($250K, NEAFL score: 82)
Lachlan Scholl, DEF, Crows ($170K, SANFL score: 76)
Matthew Parker, FWD, Saints ($366K, VFL score: 71)
Jay Lockhart, DEF/MID, Demons ($367K, VFL score: 65)
Ben Davis, FWD, Crows ($171K, SANFL score: 60)
Noah Balta, RUC/FWD, Tigers ($224K, VFL score: 54)
Curtis Taylor, MID/FWD, Kangaroos ($181K, VFL score: 50)
Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, DEF, Tigers ($224K, VFL score: 28)
Brayden Ham, FWD, Bombers ($207K, VFL score: N/A)

Patrick Naish, DEF, Tigers ($245K, VFL score: N/A)
Charlie Constable, MID, Cats ($500K, VFL score: BYE)

Good news for James Rose owners, a 150+ NEAFL score should see him recalled by the Swans to take on GWS in the Sydney Derby. It might not be as happy a time for Corey Lyons who deserves a chance to make his debut but can’t break into a rollicking Brisbane outfit at the moment. Popular cash cows that have filtered in and out of sides this year like Willem DrewKyle Dunkley and Peter Ladhams could be given another chance with a few other potential debutants rearing their heads. North Melbourne’s mid-season rookie pick Lachie Hosie kicked 2.6 in the VFL on the weekend to throw his hat into the ring, while a pair of untried Giants in Nick Shipley and Jye Caldwell could also be rewarded for strong reserves form.

Cash Cow King – Round 19

We were treated to some lesser-known rookies for the top scores this round. Of course, spoiler alert, Reilly O’Brien once again stood head and shoulders above the rest (figuratively and literally), but it was nice to see a pair of Blues and a Bulldog get some recognition for their efforts. Kudos Reilly.
