Calvin’s Captains – Rd. 3

Tom Mitchell had his second worst score of 2017 against the Tigers last year… but is Calvin concerned?

ABLETT DOES IT AGAIN

After averaging 140+ against the Hawks in his last 10 games, Gary Ablett didn’t disappoint with another impressive 138. His record against them is like no other. He has now averaged 128 for the year, ranking him 4th overall.

He is up against the Eagles this week, in Perth. Against them his record is equally impressive. He has scored 117, 120 and 118 in his last three games against them and in his last 12 games, he has scored over 100 on 11 occasions.

In his first game for 2018, Patrick Dangerfield was eased into the occasion sitting forward for 52% of the game. This is a concern. However, he scored 116 and 113 on the Eagles in his last two runs and could kick a bag here. Last week, the Bulldogs had 3 guys who scored 110+ on West Coast and Danger should be amongst that group at Optus Stadium.

Last time these teams met, Joel Selwood was convincingly tagged by Mark Hutchings to just 48. Hutchings didn’t play last week, but if he does in round 3… Joel could be in for another long day at the office.

TROUBLE FOR OUR TOM?

Last year, Tom Mitchell had his second worst score for the season of just 99 against the Tigers when he was tagged by Prestia who returned to the VFL last week.

It’s predicted that Prestia will play another one game before entering back into the big league which is great news for our Titch who is averaging 146.5 to be the best player in the game. Prestia had 19d in just over two quarters but is obviously struggling with a little fitness.

Last week, Adelaide went bananas on the Tigers with 6 players scoring 110+ which is very promising signs for the little pig this week.

FREO BOYS TO GO BIG

What a crazy thing to say, but they will.

Nat Fyfe had a nice 123 last week and this week, he plays the Suns who are his favourite team to score against in the game. He averages 124 in his last three against them and will be awesome once again on his home track.

In 2017, Lachie Neale had a season-high 152 against Gold Coast and even had 124 prior to that. Neale has scored semi boring back to back 100’s so far this year, but in this one, I think he can add another 25+ to that with ease.

STEF TO BOUNCE BACK

Port don’t have a ruck.

Last week, they filled the void left by Ryder with Westhoff and Dixon which means… Stefan Martin should have a day out on Saturday.

Sydney’s Sinclair scored 93 against the Power in round 2 and although Stef was out of sorts last week against Max Gawn, I think he’ll find this one much easier and bounce back to a very solid score.

Team mate Dayne Beams hates playing the Power with scores of 60 and 68 coming in his last two with no evidence of a tag. He’ll be extra motivated though up against his old team mate in Rocky, but will that be enough… his record suggests that it won’t be.

Dayne Zorko pumped out a huge 157 on the Power last year, in a game that happened to be at Adelaide Oval where they meet again. He had 109 last week and looked much better than his sad 57 in the first round.

QUICK AS YOU CAN CALVIN….

Adam Treloar v Carlton @ the MCG: 0x100+ scores in his last 3 against the Blues.

Luke Parker v GWS @ the SCG: Only has 1×100+ score against the Giants in a career 11 games. Ugly as it gets and easily his worst team to score against.

Bryce Gibbs v St Kilda @ Etihad Stadium: 103 last year on the Saints and is easily shaping up as a top 5 midfielder this year.

Stephen Coniglio v Sydney @ the SCG: Ranks #2 in the game with an average of 133. In beast mode.

Jack Macrae v Essendon @ Etihad Stadium: Machine! Averaging 122 and is coming off a huge 134 last week. Had 98 on the Bombers last year but is in wicked form at the moment and will continue it here.

Dusty Martin v Hawthorn @ the MCG: 117 and 103 in his last two against the Hawks who gave the Cats 4×110+ scores last week.

Josh Kelly v Sydney @ the SCG: 110 and 82 last year on the Swans and that 82 was his worst score for the season. Adding to that, he is yet to ton-up at the SCG in his career 4 games there.

Rory Sloane v St Kilda @ Etihad Stadium: Koby Stevens tagged him to just 62 last year, a move that St Kilda will most likely try again.

Zach Merrett v Bulldogs @ Etihad Stadium: 78 last week and only 82 on the Bulldogs last year. They are witches hats at the moment though, so hopefully he’ll reward his desperate coaches.

Buddy Franklin v GWS @ the SCG: In his last 5 against GWS, his best score is only 101.

Rory Laird v St Kilda @ Etihad Stadium: 115 last year on the Saints and averaging 133 at the moment. In mega hot form right now.

Lachie Whitfield v Sydney @ the SCG: 93 last year on the Swans but the pleasing thing here is… last week off half-back, Port’s Jonas and Hartlett combined for 21 marks. Cha ching!

Tom Mitchell will score...
