Every week of the pre-season, we will post our take on any news that comes through. This is anything goes and we’ll be updating the rolling blog regularly. Come back, have a read and get involved in the discussion in the comments. This is basically the ‘My Team’ of the pre-season.

Stef shaken, but ready to roll in 2017

A big reason for the lower output of premium ruckman Stefan Martin (RUC, $538,000) last year can be put down to a knee injury he suffered during the season. He had a bursectomy to fix the problem after so much pain he dealt with running during the year. Martin is still in the rehab group, but all is looking good in the new year.

Heeney signs… and wants to be in the middle

Fresh from signing on for five years, Isaac Heeney (FWD, $442,000) is already a lock in the mind of most coaches, but this quote might mean you throw away that key!

“I’m out there running my butt off just to push and get that fitness under my belt to be able to run out a game in the midfield, so I’ll be in Horse’s (Swans coach John Longmire’s) ear constantly just saying ‘get me in there’,'” Heeney said.

Gresham more midfield time

Going into his second year at St Kilda, Jade Gresham (FWD, $369,000) is eyeing more midfield time next season. Even when getting more opportunity up the ground in the latter stages of the his debut, his scores didn’t increase a lot. Gresham’s top score was 80 for the year.

Elliott good to go

Following a year out of the game due to a back injury, Jamie Elliott (FWD, $330,000) is training fully and will be ready to go when round one rolls around. Priced with a 30% discount on his 2015 average, making him a lot cheaper than the 83.8 he averaged in 2014. With a decimated forward line, he could be a good buy.

Beams nearing full training

I’ve seen Dayne Beams twice during pre-season training sessions. The first in Brisbane for his first first session where he just run… but this week he was joining the main group. Chris Fagan says a fully fit Beama isn’t far away.

“He’s getting closer to joining in full. He’s definitely had a presence around training this week.”

Bundy Run

As I mentioned back in the second of these articles when I was up in Brisbane checking out the Lions, Allen Christensen was impressive. Today we read an article about how he has been one of the pre-season pacesetters. Training fully from day dot (back earlier than most senior players), Christensen has been up there with the club’s best runners. He says he wants to be more powerful and stronger around the ball but does go on to mention he will play a lot more forward. Although he is cheap, I might have to avoid the temptation reading that.

Jack Graham ready to go

Richmond draftee, Jack Graham (MID, $150,000), was taken at pick 53 in November’s draft and recruiting manager Matthew Clarke has said he can make an instant impact.

“Jack’s got a mature body . . . The knock on him might have been, has he got a lot (of growth) left in his body?  He’s probably not going to grow much taller or get much bigger – but he doesn’t need to,” Clarke said on the Club’s official podcast ‘Talking Tigers’.

“The thing about Jack is his ability to transition-run defensively, as a midfielder, was as good as we’ve seen in a long, long time.”

Keeffe and Thomas back training with Pies

The suspended Collingwood duo – Josh Thomas (MID/FWD, $274,000) and Lachlan Keeffe (DEF, $184,000) – are back training after serving their 2 year bans. They took part in the 2km time trial and Keefe finished second with Thomas fifth. The run was made up of mostly younger players.

Eagle ruptures ACL at training

23-year-old rookie Simon Tunbridge will miss the next 12 months following an incident at training that saw his knee buckle when changing direction. He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
